Throttling and FPS Drops

I have a MSI GF65 THIN laptop with i5-10500h 45W and RTX 3060 6GB 75W and it's been a year now that I've used throttlestop to deal with the massive temperature hikes and have been okay with them until a few weeks ago that my laptop showed signs of temperatures going from 80s while gaming to 90s and my games play smoothly for about 2-3 minutes after launch but then the fps start to drop and drastically. @unclewebb I hope you see this and send help

Have you ever opened up your laptop, cleaned it out and replaced the thermal paste? Maybe now is the time if temperatures have gone up lately.

Post a screenshot of the FIVR window so I can see your settings. There might have been a Windows Update or something like that.

I have attached the FIVR control menu, and as for the Windows update, I don't really know much, but I've attached the history of previous updates. And yes, I have cleaned the fans and all, but I haven't replaced the thermal paste yet. Looking forward for your guidance, @unclewebb . And Happy New Year to you.

The ThrottleStop FIVR window shows Locked at the top middle. You cannot use ThrottleStop to make any changes if the BIOS has locked out CPU voltage control.

Use ThrottleStop 9.6 and attach a log file while you are playing a game for about 15 minutes. Post a screenshot of the TPL window.

I've attached the log file along with the FIVR settings, options, and TPL, and yeah, I've unlocked the adjustable voltages as well. I also disabled VBS, and one thing is that at the first few minutes of gameplay, the temps were good as well as the FPS, but after a few more minutes, the FPS dropped and the CPU temps went up. Helpp @unclewebb

The problem with thin and light laptops is they usually have cooling systems that are barely adequate or inadequate.

A 10500H has a 45W TDP power rating. Your CPU is already overheating when it is running at less than 30W. All of the excess heat in the chassis that is not being properly dissipated is helping to heat up the GPU. The log file shows that the Nvidia GPU seems to be thermal throttling. This is likely the main throttling problem that is killing FPS. The longer you play, the slower your computer will run.

I haven't replaced the thermal paste yet

If you want your laptop to run better then now is the time to replace the thermal paste. Find some genuine Honeywell PTM 7950. That might help solve your cooling problem.

Well the GPU temps don't go higher than 87, and I have noticed that the games run smooth when the CPU temps are under 80. As soon as the CPU hits 85 and above it starts lagging, and the CPU temps hike alot. I haven't experienced any fps drops due to GPU temps as that's the usual and maximum temperature that the GPU goes up to (around 86 or 87 only). Is there anything I can do about the CPU temps.

For nVidia GPUs, the temperature of 87°C is the maximum, not normal. Intel also doesn't recommend that their processors run under sustained loads at around 100°C.

Well the GPU temps don't go higher than 87

Your Nvidia GPU is thermal throttling. The GPU MHz go down as much as necessary to prevent the GPU from exceeding 87°C. The CPU MHz barely decline. The GPU MHz go from 1500 MHz to 1600 MHz down to 1050 MHz. With the GPU constantly bouncing off the thermal limit, you should expect stutters, a drop in FPS and overall poor game performance.

The CPU gets up to 95°C and starts thermal throttling but this is not the main problem. A CPU temperature of 85°C occurs at about the same time as when the GPU starts thermal throttling.

If you cannot find a way to lower the GPU temperature then sell your laptop and get something else. If playing games is important, avoid buying a thin and light laptop. Most thin laptops seem to have inadequate cooling issues.

So it's been 6 months since the last thread and I recently bought an arctic mx4 thermalpaste (ptm7950 is damn expensive and hard to get) and a few thermalpads for the gpu vrms. Gonna apply them tomorrow though. Hope for the best.

My suggestion would be do not waste your time using MX-4 on a mobile CPU. Most users with severe problems all seem to be using MX-4. It has a tendency to rapidly pump out so within a couple of weeks, there will be little thermal paste left between the heatsink and CPU. Here is an example of what thermal paste pump out looks like. Many popular thermal pastes have the same problem. They are OK when applied to desktop CPUs but can be a complete failure when applied direct die to a mobile CPU.

Noctua NT-H2 is good for laptops, but with PTM 7950 the performance is considerably higher.

Is thermalright heilos available at your location? It's not on par with Honeywell but it's still an excellent performer. Is significantly cheaper than PTM7950 in my part of the world. You maybe able to find it on amazon

NT-H2 still pumps out but at a much slower rate. If you can't get thermalright heilos then look for SYY-157.

SYY is the next best option if heilos isn't available

(Also there are two versions of Heilos. AMD and Intel - Buy whichever is cheaper as you'll be cutting them to size to fit on the CPU and GPu die anyway)
