One is rated at 13.3 and the other is 15.7, so at least there is some sort of separation :D
 
Anyone here who tested Carbon Black Specialized OEM Grade or AlumiChill OEM Grade thermal grease? It's made in US they say. I think this paste is more suited for bare die chips.

Note before purchasing: This thermal compound is not intended for use on every device. It is specifically designed to replace the black OEM proprietary thermal compound on the devices listed below. The heatsink gap on the devices that use Apple's special proprietary paste is very large, and needs a very thick thermal compound with large particles in order to properly transfer heat. This thermal compound will not work well on devices with thin heatsink gaps due to the large spherical particles suspended in the compound. All thermal compound sales are final, and no returns are accepted for thermal interface materials.

To be fair, it looks interesting, but not $30 interesting.
 
I paid 9 bucks CAD for 10g the last time I bought.. not bad.

Yeah sounds like chunky rock paste remember thermal grizzly had some of that cpu scratching stuff a while back.
 
Decided to use tinfoil as a thermal interface for a GPU just for the memes. Unfortunately, I don't yet have that GPU and probably won't until late February, but stay tuned.

Will test it with:

• "Stock" paste (RX 6800 and 6900 series ain't present brand new for reasonable $$$ where I live so I'm gonna buy a used GPU)
• MX-6
• Phase transfer
• Tinfoil
• Probably something else that's funny

All tests will be performed at 320 W core-only wattage with ambient temperature around +15C/59F outside PC case (don't have air conditioning, 3C error margin is possible).

Tin foil? Why does this sound like either A, it's gonna work (rather poorly) or B, instantly bake the chip and we won't see any of your testing, cause poof!! Lol. Maybe do the foil last.....

Ketchup works well. Been tested a billion times already. Most common household stuff actually. Stuff from the garage too, like white lithium, and never seizes, axle grease so on, so forth.

What is phase transfer though? Like a cascade unit? Single stage?

That's not Athlon Thoroughbred or something. These GPUs are well protected from such nonsensical deaths.

Lol. So are cpu's, killed plenty of both. ;)

If it doesn't shut off at thermtrip, cote temp spikes 190c, consider it a done chip. This is a possibility, however I'm sure your aware.

Accidentally usually. For me it's the v-core that shortend lifespans.

One CPU (i7 11th gen engineering sample) damaged (not dead as of month ago, not sure if still kickin: I sold it, and yeah, I told everything about it to the buyer so he's well aware of what he bought) because I accidentally short circuit.
One CPU (C2Q Q9xxx) died for unknown reasons. Bought BNIB, never tortured, it just suddenly stopped working.

Never killed a GPU. Only witnessed one pesky R7 370 failing on my watch (I thought it's that common thing with leadless solder not providing proper contact but it's just the chip died).

All my wares were capable of timely thermal throttling when temperatures got too high.

Get this itch time to time. Kinda like testing with different pastes at ambient.

But under a Peltier or something.

DryIce/LN2, the Ice is really easy to obtain. Have done all weekend binges 20 hours straight. Get like 3 benchmarks accomplished only sometimes.

Most pastes crack and pop under the LN2. Almost sounds like the cpu popped. Lol

Ambient temps were like that a dozen years ago when I wanted to OC the heck outta one of my LGA775 Celerons. It just refused to die. Still alive, unlike 5 or 6 motherboards that had been tasked with providing such circus.
 
I checked this post, its like a 6 months but almost 2 years gone... Time goes by so fast:(

I've applied the gd007 here in first week of april 2022 and still strong with no higher temps. I bet if I take off the cold plate the paste still soft:laugh:

In 2022 I was in thermal paste fever, but now, the cheaper and durable.... the better. Nothing beats the direct contact (no TIM) if you are looking for numbers but I think no one will lap the die and cooler toghether. It will be a such madness and waste of time:kookoo:

After having a few issues with one of my Founders RTX 3080s, I had swapped out the copper shims that we had installed on the cards to help with the temp issues with the VRAM, I was getting some weirdness with temps and such, so I wanted to find out what was going on...
I stripped the card down and made sure that I was pasting on everything as it should have been..

Sadly the temps didn't really improve. I believe there where getting very close to thermal throttling before, so 110C at times, you could hear the card spinning up the fans faster to try and help with the temps every so often.

So I decided try some new pads afterwards because that was the cheapest option and putting to water cooling wouldn't have been the best option... So I grabbed a couple of packs from our friend Amazon, they came through and we got those installed....

When we tried them, I was impressed considering.....

The hot spot and the TJunction temps had come crashing down which was great. As I use these cards for FAH mostly, I try to keep them as cool as possible and I make sure I don't run them at 100% power because of the extra power consumption. Trying to keep them cool and save a bit of power to help with the efficiency can help massively :) Just like when your mining but its the same thing as Folding I think really. Its not about how fast you get something done, its about the efficiency and the fact your not going to wear the card out completely doing it.. Anything for me to keep my GPUs about the 50 to 60C during the heat of summer, I'm happy with. Anything higher like 80C or so, is getting to hot for me especially when these cards can run sometimes 24/7 when or if I'm feeling up to the electric bill :)
I'll see if I can find some comparison screen grabs and post those up as well just for reference if you'd like :)

I'm wondering if I should change to it, since I have overheard liquid metal only lasts 6 months or so on Laptops since it gets above 80* a lot.

Would you agree however that PTM7950 is far more durable in terms of how long it lasts, and safer to use compared to liquid metal?

Is PTM7950 easy to clean in its cold state after many cycles? I think I've seen it squeeze out with nothing but bits between the two surfaces, having bridged all the imperfections over time, and you simply wipe it off?

That rumor is patently false. Liquid Metal TIM lasts indefinitely. They are metal alloys that do not easily or quickly break down or degrade, not molecular chemistry's that can and do frequently break-down and degrade.

Whoever has been telling you that Liquid Metal TIM doesn't last long are either have no experience with the stuff, are morons or are ignorant fools. Either way, actively avoid their advice!!

If you're already using LQ TIM, and it's performing as it should, leave it alone as you already have the best thermal compound you can get. Now if it was poorly/improperly applied, then you only need to re-apply it, not replace it.

Hi There! :toast::rockout: Sorry to respond with the negative tone above, but reality must prevail. Liquid Metals are the Kings of TIMs and there is nothing better for room temperature applications.
