AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D

Depends, what games are you gaming? Because there should be a difference on average of about 11% in fps going from a 3600X to a normal 5800X.

What is the rest of your system?

You will still miss out on PCI-E 4.0 with the B450 chipset even it's a fine board.

Regarding PCI-E 4.0 there's no problem because I own PCI-E 3.0 SSDs only and don't see any need to upgrade for my kind of use.

Not thinking much about SSD's here and i know that graphics cards loose about 5% at max but also gpu and so on because your system specs are out dated I guess.

I am running a Gigabyte M30 1TB NVME SSD that's only PCI-E 3.0 x4 as a boot drive and I use my Sabrent Rocket 4.0 2TB as a game library.

VR can be cpu heavy and Cyberpunk too but have you tried the MSI overlay via Rivatuner to see which maxes out at 99-100% doing games because it doesn't have to be CPU that holding you back but I guess for VR you would run a better then GTX 1070 as you state.

Yes there will be a difference. But it won't be noticable everywhere since you play at 1440p with a 3060Ti.
But the 3D will boost the fps your gpu can push.

Sorry, my specs were outdated on the tech power up forum preferences.
My setup is a MSI B450 Tomahawk Max, Ryzen 5 3600, 16gb DDR4 3600 CL16, Samsung 970 Evo nvme 1tb (OS and part of the steam library) and Samsung 850 Evo (the rest of the steam library), Qnix 27 inch IPS 1440p @90Hz and 23 inch 1080p @144Hz LCD, Asus Xonar audio card, etc.
I'm pretty happy with the performance but I keep reading several articles stating that the best value upgrade I could do at the moment is buying the 5800x3d, instead of having to buy a new motherboard, ddr5 and new cpu. Especially if I can find a 5800x3d for 350€. But the articles state that it's better to who plays at 1080p resolution.
What's your thoughts about this?

In 1080p or in cpu bound games, you will see the biggest improvement.
But there is improvement in all resolutions, even in 4K but it depends on the gpu.

Your gpu is quite good, so I would personally make the move to 3D.

((Basically I already did it, moving from 3700X to 5800X3D, having a similar gpu))
 
Hi Guys, I own a ryzen 3600, a MSI b450 tomahawk max and a Nvidia 3060ti. I play games at 1440p.
Will I see significant performance gains if I upgrade to the 5800x3d or just isn't worth it?
Anyone here made the same upgrade?

Thanks for the tips. I'll keep an eye on prices and when I see the 5800X3D at less than 350 euros I'll buy it and sell my 3600. I feel like I don't have to rush it, prices will tend to decline, right.

Prices will go down up and and repeat over time as the process matures - it's a popular CPU, but they dont want to flood the market with it either

Remember that even a plain old 5600 (no X or G) is going to be faster for gaming than your 3600, by quite a margin

The gains aren't huge compared to the two, but I do want a future proof machine ~ 5 years. Both machines will have 6900XTs and neither gaming above 1440P. I can purchase (2) 5600X for the price of (1) 5800X3D and I don't need to incorporate Noctua coolers (I already have two on hand for them).

Thoughts? Essentially looking for any real-world usage, potentially someone who had a 5600X and moved to a 5800X3D.

Are your boys hardcore gamers? If not, I'd settle for the 5600. You can always get a used 5800 later if they need it.

Microcenter Atlanta might have 5600X3D - worth a shot?

I am a big believer in X3D. I run one at work for some crappy software I use and it helps a lot.

Crazy to me that Microcenter was able to strike an exclusive deal to get the 5600X3D. I would have to drive 2.5 hours one way, and then back. It would cost me a gas tank thus eliminating the savings. $229 + $80 gas = 5800X3D

If you were building from scratch there are better ways to spend $320 on a CPU. Given that you have most everything else already, the 5800X3D will provide the best gaming performance on AM4 and extend the life of the build as long as possible. Seems like the best choice considering your purpose.

I agree with you. I picked up 2 5800X3D from Amazon just after Christmas for $315 each. They are selling the 5600X for $159 now, it's nice to see. If I am only giving up 5 FPS, then to me the 5800X3D isn't worth it and will be returned. Looking to extend the life of these 2 motherboards I have on hand.

Good point, didn't think about gas.

I say the 5800X3D is a better pairing with a 6900XT, but if you can't swing the money then so be it.

Much more consistent FPS rather than a much higher FPS.

basically, its the minimum FPS that goes up. Base it on your intended frame rates.

If you're under 144Hz, the 5600x is perfectly fine.

At 4K the difference is smaller again - being GPU limited by a mere 4090.

The maximum FPS and frame per watt swing wildly in favour of the x3D, so if you intend to do nothing but GPU upgrades for those systems for many years - grab the x3D, tune the RAM in (3600-3800 MT/s) and it'll be fine for a long time.

If splashing out doesn't harm the wallet, or if the kids are playing games which are largely CPU-bound where the X3D shines, pull the trigger on the 5800X3D. Some of these CPU resource hungry titles have been seen to push as much 20-30% performance uplift with the X3D. Inevitably, a growing demand with titles or subsequent releases which will have ZEN 3 sweating and Zen 3-X3D making amends.

5600 is definitely my favorite choice for budget AM4
the low wattage means it works on the worst motherboards and worst cooling, too - even the wraith stealth is enough


The x3D smashes me ahead in a few titles, starcraft II and borderlands 3 felt like entirely new games

Pretty good video here. I'm not sure how interested I am in future GPU upgrades for them. Maybe maybe not. My youngest boy is 7 and my oldest is 10. The amount of living off me in terms of gaming builds will only occur for a little while longer.

Although I normally pass down my GPUs so there's that...

I forgot this thread was around so I will just post it here.

I just installed my 5800X3D the other day for myself for Christmas on my current PC with the X470 MSI motherboard and I have a few questions.

First of all I havent updated the BIOS in forever! so I updated it to the one that was required for the CPU and I had already installed a few weeks before a brand new Noctua tower cooler the NH-U9S ready for the X3D. What I noticed with the BIOS update the 2700X which has been in the system since day one ran even better! after the update. Everything ran smoother, desktop, games etc and even the performance of the 2700X had climbed to 4.1GHz all core which was a good 100-150MHz faster all core then it used to do, I was surprised how good it ran!.

After installing the 5800X3D the BIOS got reset completely which I found a bit odd but whatever! and put in the XMP profile, checked temps, did the normal stuff, then let it boot into windows but that didnt happen it just loop over and over again into the BIOS and which I found it was trying to boot the older SSD which has no OS on it for some reason and the NVME drive wasnt there to boot from, it was there in the BIOS but not when I wanted to select it as 1st Boot drive. I figured out that I had to set it to Legcey for it to boot into W10 on the NVME Drive which would then show up on the boot list once that was select. It refused to do it on the UEFI BIOS setting. Anyway it booted and everything ran fine! but I wanted to then turn on Resizable Bar in the BIOS. I found the option turned it on but then wouldnt boot into Windows again, I found it would turn it to UEFI once turned on and you HAVE to have UEFI when using this option.........so I had to turn it off and leave it off so I could select Legacy so it would boot into W10. Anyone know how to fix this weird issue? so I can boot into Windows but also have Resizable turned on. without formatting.

Secondly this thing runs HOT! I knew it was going to be hotter then my 2700X but i wasnt expecting it to be that much hotter.....With the new cooler it was hitting 90c under a full load test (cinebench) and it would hit this temp pretty quickly....within 1 pass! and to me this was a concern. SO i removed the cooler cleaned off the thermal paste that I always use and used the Noctua paste just alot more of it and changed where the fan sits slightly and then tested it again and it did make a difference it would still hit 90c but it would take three times as long to do so and sits around 60c when gaming. I think by adding a second fan to the cooler it might keep it from hitting that 90c, we will see i guess.

EDIT: THat been said about the high temps I touched the cooler, I would feel the air coming off the cooler even touched the heat pipes and they would not be anywhere near the so called 90c the PC was telling me, do people think that the temps its showing is false? or?

1. The BIOS resetting itself upon installation of a new CPU or RAM is normal. This is how it prevents settings being used that were fine with the old part, but could potentially damage the new one.

2. You probably didn't find the UEFI boot option because Windows was installed with legacy mode (if that's even possible, I'm not sure). You might need to reinstall Windows with proper UEFI support, which is also needed for ReBar, I suppose.

3. What cooler are you using? I would suggest forgetting anything that's AMD stock, and getting something decent.

4. Exhaust air being way colder than it was with the old CPU is normal. Chiplets have a much smaller surface area, so the quantity of heat dissipated by your cooler is much smaller as well, despite the CPU running much hotter. The same way boiling a litre of water won't produce as much heat/steam as boiling 1,000 litres.

Most possibly the difference between CPU's temp and cooler's temp when touching it, means that the contact between the CPU and its cooler isn't optimal. Most older and many newer coolers aren't made with the Ryzen's chiplet design in mind but mostly for Intel's one.

Is the one in the review link below your cooler? If so, one point in the conclusion might help you a bit:

Most possibly the difference between CPU temp and cooler's temp when touching it, means that the contact between the CPU and its cooler isn't optimal. Most older and many newer coolers aren't made with the Ryzen's chiplet design in mind but mostly for Intel's one.
That's (unfortunately) by design with chiplet Ryzen. There is no way to ensure sufficient contact for Intel-like heat transfer. That's why a cooler that can run a 120-130 W Intel CPU can only cool Ryzen up to 80-ish W.

I mostly agree but the curve on the contact plate means a lot for cooling and that's why Intel's latest socket need an added frame mount for the cooler to contact better to the cpu. For Ryzen CPUs chiplet design is harder to cool but simpler to get the best from coolers not designed only for Intel and just having socket compatibility to AM4-AM5 only to not lose marketing share.

Temps above 45°C will damage the skin. Even on a crappy cooler temps should be high enough to burn you if you touch them while the CPU is at 90°C! That's if you touch the heatpipes or the fin stack. Air could be colder, that depends.

As others mentioned above, check if the cooler is making good contact or just change it with something decent. Top end paste like TG is also worth considering.

I personally never had issues with the cooling of AMD chips, coming from the shape of their thermal plate. Just rub it good with IPA and then re-apply good paste. And be sure to put enough of it. Less is worse in this case.
