You misunderstand. I need to glue down the copper shim stock. The aluminum block was going to use a thermal pad and 2.5mm sprung heatsink screws through the bottom of the board. I have a 1.5mm thermal pad under the little heatsink I have right now. But it's .75mm difference in height between the fets and those little caps. Pretty big damn step as far as trying to get a heatsink to apply good pressure.

Reversing the airflow does give me an idea. On the 7810 I'm going to run a 2nd CPU heatsink on both chips. The first one is stepped to allow for the optical disc drive which is going away. Anyways the 2nd CPU always runs hot because the first sink pushes right into it. If I reversed the 2nd CPU sink so they push into themselves I could duct that straight out the panel cover so they would both be pulling ambient and would exhaust out of the case.

We're both on the same page for expansion then. The BTX stuff was designed for Netburst CPUs to run at up to 4GHz stock speeds. They got as far 3.73 on some P4 Xeons before C2D made Netburst instantly obsolete, and BTX irrelevant for most users.t.

Nice find, both that site and that GPU.

I almost bought a similar one a couple years back, could be the same type of GPU even, but decided getting the output setup correctly (with the Tesla doing the grunt and another as the display output) could be a nightmare on Linux, albeit maybe with Wayland it wouldn't be so bad these days.

I'd love to know how you make out with that. I hope it's painless for you.

It's on my want list to get a t5820 with a 10900x. That 10900x part is easier said than done. Very hard to find it already in a workstation and it's still an expensive CPU to buy.
I have continued tweaking my t5810. But since the bios mods TS doesn't work anymore. So I'm running an older version of XTU. Which sucks because it has less options.
I recently figured out through bios options how to overclock the memory too. I have my 2133 ddr4 running at 2400. Also was able to tighten the timings. That's 8x8gb.
My 8 core 1680v3 runs 4.7ghz 2 cores active 4.6 4 cores active and 4.5ghz 8 cores active.
Picked a 2080ti up and have it tuned up a little as well
Been playing a lot of PCVR and my PC seems like a beast.

I looked into the HP Z4 G4. It seems they were offered with W2xxx series Xeons, or X series i9 X CPUs. Different chipsets listed for each CPU series. I've seen HP do this before. different MB in the same model computer.
C422 for the Xeons, and X299 for the i9.....X. So the ones at Server store won't OC due to the server type chipset.

It looks like Dell has done the same sort of thing. There is the Dell Precison T5820 that takes Xeon W series CPUs.

I'll post a text file later. It's going to be my modifiable bios option list that I get with amisce. Just because it's a server chipset doesn't mean it's any less capable. They just hide all those options.

I found software called amisce
I looked for this for 2 years before finding it. It was made for oems to test out different hidden settings without hard modding the firmware. Everything can be reset with a CMOS reset.

And I've looked for xeon variants of the later x CPUs. I haven't found any reports.
I think some of that stuff just went to specific OEM skus. Like the e5-1691v3 is a 14 core unlocked chip made for Amazon and can be had for like 900 dollars if you can find it. I'm sure there are V4 variants and x299 variants. I just haven't found them.

That's an opinion and while it can be argued, X79 is still a valid and relevant platform for anything someone would generally want to do with a PC. Hell, X58 is still a usage platform for almost anything. And yes, I have both, in active use.

Since i don't have an actual need for a powerful computer it's all about cheap thrills for me. I just like doing stuff that others have overlooked. 16GB GPU $150 I'm in. $15 unlocked Nehalem Xeon, sure why not!. $140 X299 workstation.... I still have a couple T3500 to play with. But if somebody else wants to try it go ahead.

If someone owns a x79 platform and wants to do something with it. It's capable. But money for performance I think x99 is still on top. Between native nvme boot support and bifurcation the systems are much more usable

That can go even further back. I have a P35 system that is still in daily use. It's all about what one wants to do with it, what the budget is, and how much they're willing to trade modern part efficiency for price.
In my case it's because I already had the parts and the worst it has to do is decode youtube and twitch, which it is still capable off. I still wouldn't recommend to buy the platform for anything but general interest in tinkering with it.

I found out a little more today on the HP Z4 G4. Userbenchmark reports the same MB part# for both CoreX, and W Xeon benchnarks. Since it's a workstation I'n guessing the BIOS allows both, but for a workstation the C422 chipset would be expected.. Dell used the X299 chipset for their Core X versions. Probably the better choice for an overclock.
Unclewebb hasn't tested this family of CPUs with Throttlestop. Intel XTU may be the way to go. But it might not want to play with a C422 chipset.
I've reached out to some HP overclockers, and some unlocked Xeon fans to try and get some more info. on this.

Throttlestop was written by Unclewebb for undervolting/ underclocking laptops for extended battery life. Then some wiseguys found out it could also overclock locked BIOS computers with unlocked CPUs. In my case I went from 0% overclock to 2nd and 3rd place at CPUZ with a QX6800 in a totally locked down Dell Dimension E520. Beginners luck.

That's about as far from an undervolted laptop as you can get! He's been following the OC projects in various forums, and participating here with the T3500 projects. It really isn't fair to expect him to run out and buy a system just because someone (like me) asks some questions here. I did my first one w/o any help from anybody. Since I had just about no computer skills to speak of that says a lot about how easy this can be.
So thanks to Unclewebb for making this possible.

Looking into this further HP notes in their datasheet for the Z4 G4 two different chipsets for the differnt CPU families.
The Core X runs the X299 chipset that allows overclocking. The W Xeons C422 that doesn't. Memory type and capacity differs also.
So what does that mean to us? IDK yet. Typically Xeons that match an unlocked CPU are unlocked too.
So IDK if this is a hard separation or not. Also IDK if it matters to us. TS might OC the W Xeon, chipset or not, if it's unlocked.
I'll see if I can get the HP guys interested in this. But it does look like there are Dell and HP workstations with an unlocked CPU and an unlocked Chipset out there

I wrote an efi driver for the e5-1680v2 because my hp z420 didn’t support bios overclocking and I couldn’t do software overclocking in ESXi. The code was super trivial. Setting up tianocore build environment was nightmarishly difficult. Took days because the instructions suck.

The discussion at Serve The Home is continuing. Some very specific info. there on overclocking Dell workstations. They're looking at the 7820 and 5820 series.
They're listing some software for doing this, and some settings. They report that it looks possible to them.

I've mentioned the Nvidia tesla P100 GPU a few places. There is one thing that needs to be understood about this card. It was sold as a math processor for use in servers. Servers don't have Video cards, or VGA power cables on their PSUs. So the Tesla 8 pin connector is not an 8 pin GPU connector. It's an EPS 8 pin CPU connector. There are adapters for it to use a couple of VGA connector to 8 pin EPS.
