Dragon's Dogma 2 Console Versions Reportedly Running at 30 FPS

Japan's PC_Focus social media account has shared some slightly damning insider information regarding the performance of Dragon's Dogma 2 on current generation consoles. Capcom's much anticipated action role player is scheduled for a March 22 multiplatform launch—encompassing versions for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S. The upcoming sequel leverages the company's proprietary RE Engine (Reach for the Moon Engine)—contrary to widespread misinformation, "RE" does not stand for Resident Evil. A "Japanese insider" familiar with pre-release builds has relayed information to PC_Focus about Dragon's Dogma 2 running at "30 FPS on consoles." An IGN Japan weekend report is also cited—the publication confirms that the game "features only 1 save slot," with "auto and manual sharing the same slot."

Dragon's Dogma 2 Steam profile provides system requirements for PC platforms in "Minimum" and "Recommended" categories—as noted by Wccftech, both sheets list estimated performance for 30 FPS: "(for) minimum specs, the Steam page lists an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU, which on paper, is roughly equivalent to the CPU inside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series." Capcom has not divulged any official details regarding Dragon's Dogma 2's visual modes for games consoles—be it "Quality" or "Performance." We hope to see some clarification pop up in pre-release material leading up to the game's late March launch.

Really wish I could get this game. I absolutely adore the first game, and the hype was real after the announcement.

But $70 is too much, and with Capcom's latest actions involving retroactively adding DRM to old games, I'm not in a hurry to give them any money. Plus, they're known to put MTX in their single-player games (not even DD1 was safe from that in the beginning).

I refuse to buy games with DRM other than SteamStub, and while Capcom does remove Denuvo after a couple of years, they've started adding Enigma Protector to their games. Fortunately, that one is easier to patch out, but it's the principle of the thing.

At least there's almost certain to be a demo.

The first game only had one save slot but two different save types. You had checkpoint saves and manual saves, which effectively gave you two slots and did allow for save scumming.

Couple that with the Godsbane sword you get from completing the main story and starting NG+, and save scumming pretty much becomes a game mechanic.

Consoles are always left in the dust after a few years. They could get these games to run at 60+ fps but with serious compromises.

Not sure why people are surprised. The original DD also ran at 30 on consoles of its time. The engine it ran on, MT Framework, absolutely allowed for 60, as DMC4 proved couple years earlier, but the open world apparently took its toll. I would assume same thing applies here. The latest RE Engine game is what, RE4make? Yeah, that has relatively cramped linear locations so it has performance budget to target 60. DD is different, the amount of crazy stuff on the screen coupled with an open world is what seals the 30 FPS target. Who knows, maybe there will be a Performance mode that runs at, like, 1080p or even lower with upscaling. Wouldn’t count on it though.

Playstation (probably) says: This is why we upgrade our hardware every four years with a 2-2.25x(+) faster GPU. You know, 2x framerate or ~1440p->4k (as an example).

Phase out the old systems, relegate the early new generation to 30, keep the 60fps experience for those that have grown accustomed (from PS4 cross-ports).

We shall see how it runs, but I'm actually quite all right with this cadence (four years later a console drops to 30fps and the replacement can do 60fps) if that were to be the trend.

Then resolutions could drop or frames halve as as the next-gen launches, rinse and repeat.

Considering they use midrange GPUs at birth, and are replaced before the lowest-end on the market is substantially faster (PS5Pro will probably launch at a similar time to the 7600 replacement; 7600 is similar in speed to a PS5), I actually think it is a very sound business plan that puts Sony's consoles as a legitimate consideration vs upgrading to a new $500-$600 GPU every four years.

This did not used to be the case, and it did indeed make them appear to suck (while bolstering PC hardware in the later half of a console generation), but it sure appears to be so now.

Yeah...I was going to get into that but IYKYK, YK?

Many PC ports from Japan are indeed LITERAL CONSOLE PORTS (with intended resolution and framerate caps for consoles) without optimization (like Dark Souls which originally ran at the Xbox resolution in a window on PC; many others that don't/didn't support above 720p and/or >30fps). People like Mimosa man had to do all kinds of shit to get them to work correctly (and I appreciate him/them dearly for it).

I understand there are limitations built by the engine FOR consoles, I understand sometimes different aspects of a scene are rendered at different resolutions (like the original Shadow of the Colossus or even Nier:Automata's GI) which makes them a pain in the ass to 'fix' as scaling them/fixing them (like creating a new scene versus mirroring the old one) is a PITA (or too resource-intensive), but sometimes PCs can, if given the option, brute-force them. Sadly, it's often not even an option until somebody like Durante rips them all apart and designates different levels to each aspect in an .ini file or the like.

Not trying to be a dick towards Japanese devs, as they focus on and squeeze every ounce of life from the console they're targeting (while doing some amazing tricks to make them work), which is indeed a very special thing, but a lot of them sure could use a Nixxes/Bluepoint in their corner wrt PC releases, for sure.

Until then, buy your favorite Durante-like modder a beer, if you're able. They're doing God's work.

in hardware terms it is ancient at least the cpu, the cpu cant reach 60 fps already in many many games. its slower than a 3600. gpu is like a rx 6600XT just with more bandwidth. it fits perfectly in the powerbudget of a console. this is what people dont get when they compare pcs to consoles. rdna 2 could run much higher clocks in the series x for example but it would need much more power of course which is not allowed in the console space due to regulations.

It isn't that - it's literally one save slot for your installed game. Start New Game? Overwrite your file and loose what you had (there is a confirmation button at least).
It's archaic game design to say it lightly.
