I thought these cards were meant to boost to ~2.6Ghz based on their specs?
They'll boost higher but depends on the power, temps, voltage, type of load etc. Been like that since ~2012.

Well that's great, because the AMD subreddit let me to believe the 3Ghz barrier was a pipe dream! In fact the AMD subreddit told me a lot of terrible things about this card which i'm glad aren't true.

Im curius, what else they told you over there about the 7900XTX? (red devil specific or in general?)

Boost can hit occasionally even 3.1~3.2 if clock, power limit and temperature allows it. Average boost on the other hand should be around 2.5~2.8GHz depending game and again the other limits.

There's a lot of doomsaying about this card (and all of the 7XXX series actually). A lot of people said there's no point in upgrading from RDNA2 and that the chiplet design was basically a first-gen failure. There was some talk about the card being overpriced for what you got as well.

The clocks can differ a lot depending on the game. It's just how RDNA3 works. In one game you may get 2400-2500 in other 2800. I think that Red Devil has raised PL as a default BIOS so it helps with keeping the clocks higher.

Well, I don't think i'll bother with any sort of undervolting this time around. I'm seeing effective clocks of nearly 3.2Ghz at stock setup (apart from the fan curve tweak) which is just mind blowing to me:

The card is whisper quiet, cool and plays everything I can think to throw at it. Really happy with the purchase :)

Those posts are either old ones from when RDNA 3 first launched, or coming from people who don't know what they're talking about.

The 7800 XT is a huge jump from my 6750 XT, and since AMD solved the idle power problem a couple of driver versions ago, I couldn't be happier with it. :)

That's the thing. Different games use different parts of the GPU differently, and since you're power limited basically all the time, the power allocation allows for different clock speeds under different loads.

If you max out the power slider, you'll see much more consistent clocks across various games. :)

Since the newest driver, the Game I play most, AMS2 jumped from 250 FPS to 350 FPS on my 7900XT at 4K. For me the only people that throw salt on these cards are people who have not experienced them long term (Especially in 2023). For the money the 7900 series is the cat's meow. Don't get me wrong the prices are still too high. Where I live the 7900XT is $1000 and the 4090 is $2500. That seems pretty academic to me. There is also the fact that my 6800XT had 16GB and you don't want to stay at the same level when you want to improve 4K numbers, looking at a 4080 Super. Even in those reviews the 7900XT is right there in 2024. I also have to add that AMD software IS that good. I don't even have to leave it to surf the internet, stream, make a video, edit a video, push the colours on my monitor and launch my most played Game. The best though are the auto buttons. My 7900XT is at a max GPU clock of 2938 MHz. and the stress test confirmed it is all good. That is Gaming joy, there is no Game that my PC does not laugh at. One of the best narratives is that CP2077 does not run well on AMD cards. The thing is you can't even enable some of the Nvidia features in that Game and 165 FPS at 4K is plenty for how kinetic the Game play can get in that Game.

For my 7800XT, the highest clocks I've seen is in GravityMark (especially the final scene when the results pop-up) and Mesh shading test in 3DMark. Games usually max out at 2800MHz.

100% normal behavior…
No GPU really can sustain 3+GHz on shaders or front-end.
You may see an average of 2.6-2.8 if temp and power limits allow it.

That sounds like reddit in general, have to sift thru mounds of shite to get anything meaningful from it.

4k Native Cyberpunk Ultra with some high settings 70-90fps.

Card is a beast the min fps are so good. Love this card.

Why? 6950 is a beast. even 6800 can play 4k 60 just fine with optimised settings :)

if you play all ultra your fault. most games ultra doesnt give much if at all visible while really playing but huge fps gains most of the time

The only issue I see with the 7000 series is how close in performance the 7700XT and 7800XT is. Its not even worth me upgrading from my current 6700XT yet unless the price is right. Looking forward to the 8000 or 9000 series though,

It seems my overclock works nicely:

1706875425541.png

Currently running Nitro+ at 1090mv, 460W PL and 3,2 max clocks. Can't touch the memory otherwise everything crashes, but with only core OC it's stable.
Snug my self in 3rd place in DX12, RT bench but I guess it's only because not a lot of people use this benchmark.

Yeah with Vulkan it's staying at max set so 3,2GHz almost all the time, with DX12 it ranges from 3-3,2.

So, Avatar: FoP at 3440x1440, max settings, no FSR or FG runs like crap on my 7800 XT, which made me thinking...

I could sell the 7800 XT and some random, unused stuff (spare CPUs, GPUs, RAM kits...) and get a 7900 XTX with an investment of ~300 GBP. Or I could wait for RDNA 4 and enable FG in the meantime.

Opinions? :ohwell:

Ive managed to settle into the 2600mhz region but its not fully stable yet. Vcore is at 1025.

Should i add 15% power or reduce?

Maxing out the power slider should always be the first step when you overclock. Most of the time, I don't even do anything else than that. It gives me instant +100 MHz thanks to the factory boost algorithm.

My vote is for the 7900 XTX. It's a monster of a card that i'm very happy with.
