Hello everyone. Can anyone tell me the best way to connect the Denon X1400H AV receiver to a PC? I think it's best to use the HDMI output of the GPU, is that right? This way I get better sound quality than using the optical output of the sound card on the motherboard. Of course, this is for the purpose of using surround sound in games. My lineup in the profile description. Thanks.

Yes, you should pass HDMI from the PC through the receiver in to your display, that's your best bet. Optical has been a fall back option, just in case other things aren't working or you have no other options, for quite a while now.

I wouldn't use a pass-through because I have a monitor connected via Display port and I don't think the AV receiver can handle its 165Hz and Gsync, but correct me if I'm wrong. So the monitor would still be connected via DP and I would only send sound to the AVR with the second HDMI cable.

If things cooperate, great. In my experience Windows can get weird when you connect things it sees as displays then don't use them.

I used to run DP\HDMI and HDMI at the same time how ever my monitor has more than one input. So i connected one from PC DP to monitor DP and the other from PC HDMI to monitor HDMI.

DP was used for picture were i used HDMI for getting the sound. Reason was due to the AMDs 390X was limited to 30Hz at 4K though HDMI, but the DP was able to do 4k@60.

So one ran at 30Hz and the other at 60Hz.

In my experience to make sure which one was the main was to plug in the DP cable first and later the HDMI and go to sound devices and change as needed.

Two issue's that i could have was wrong monitor picked to be default and could grey your hair some HA, the other was minimizing a game could put the a application on the HDMI connected screen which was my main issue doing it.

Depends on the quality of your Receiver. Toslink is better when your receiver has it's own DAC. That is where the difference is. I have a Sony that I bought in 2000 that has 28 different sound stages and through the Toslink it can produce 5.1 from any source. With HDMI the quality of your cable matters. Of course if your HDMI on the receiver is up to spec you should be able to do the same.

This really comes down to whether one wants to light up those DTS lights or not, otherwise toslink.

true which for awhile i thought dts and dolby are better than pcm on optical for awhile i thought that was the "rule" of surround but optical has been updated so much its hard to say what it can or cant do anymore which is rare to hear about a cable or cable connection
