Choi Joo-sun, CEO of Samsung Display, spoke to journalists post-conclusion of a March 6 lecture at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). A Chosun Daily Business reporter pulled some quotes regarding Samsung's outlook for new generation micro OLED technologies. Choi and his colleagues are likely taking their time on this development front—Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS) has already mass-produced OLED Microdisplay products. The Japanese technology giant is the main supplier of display panels for Apple's Vision Pro mixed reality headset—a recent iFixit teardown revealed a possible custom-designed unit. Leaked "Bill of Materials" figures indicate an eye-watering total cost of $456 for a pair of SSS 4K panels—Apple is reportedly engaged in negotiations with SeeYa and BOE regarding the supply of cheaper alternatives.

The Samsung Display boss is monitoring current industry trends, but his team is not rushing out competing solutions: "The market potential of micro OLED, which is used in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), is significant, but I believe the market will begin in earnest around 2027-2028...there are many technical aspects to overcome and cost considerations." Choi believes that Samsung is better off with plenty of preparation time, before an anticipated bloom in the micro OLED market—in his opinion, domination can be achieved with careful investment in research and development (R&D) efforts. He stated: "During the remaining 2 to 3 years, we will deploy manpower to ensure that Samsung Display does not fall behind in the micro OLED market and introduce solutions that are competitive compared to competitors...The acquisition of Imagine, an American display company, is also part of this effort."

MicroOLED?
Is this Sony's MicroLED technology?
Or, a 'hybridized development' of techniques in microLED, and established OLED technologies?

BOE was a horrible option for Valve on Steam Deck, lots of dead pixel issues I read (luckily my Deck is Samsung panel), and overall quality issues. Not sure I would want BOE making my panels personally, but Apple sheep are well... baaaa baaaa I am better than thee hahaha

BOE is a pretty terrible supplier in general, and I'm not even talking about their quality issues. They were caught changing specifications on the displays for the iPhone 13 behind Apple's back. In practical terms, BOE's only use is to put pressure on Samsung and LG to cut prices in order to be more competitive.

Unfortunately these both LG and Samsung have started making monitors using BOE panels.

I know it's how you make money ...
But going for cheaper supply for an astronomical market price ... :kookoo:
It's like a Porsche with a VW motor ... wait a sec ... :D

It's relative, the Apple Vision is hell expensive but the tech inside is not overpriced. The display is great, ahead of it's time and probably not worth the price per quality jump against competitors like PSVR but it's not overpriced.

Like Porsche though, you're buying the status of having the product. Just like Mercedes uses a bunch of Renault motors, etc. etc. Business and capitalism.

I wonder if there are some brands in this world who still use good quality stuff, build with quality in mind ...
Rolls Royce maybe ?

Maybe for some of their lowest end products that use LCD, but other than that, no, Samsung and LG do not use BOE. They've switched to other LCD providers.

BOE has been removed as a major supplier due to issues with stealing tech and patent infringements.

I believe Valve also switched to Samsung only panels recently. I am not 100% on that though, I know the limited edition model Deck OLED was using BOE panel, but the lower end models were using Samsung, but now that limited edition is gone and all the issues came about, I think all Deck OLED's are now Samsung and Samsung moving forward, but again not 100% on that.

Probably a good thing.

I wish it was LG WOLED or mini-LED Sony for Steam Deck 2 though

Lowest and Mid range products seem to be using BOE panels based on models, "flagship" OLEDs and gaming products seem to be inhouse panels for both LG and Samsung.
