There an improvement, there were challenges and opportunities in the build. There were challenges and opportunities in moving from intel to AMD. I would characterize it as AMD motherboad makers are a little rough around the edges. This board in some respects was barebones compared to the asus dual sage motherboard I had.

Is it faster, deeper and more powerful - yes, even the benches show that. However I would not say it was by any wide margin.

I've read mostly the same thing sure its faster but there can be more headaches.... I will never own either so it is good to hear from somebody who has done both. I find the hardware both fascinating and amazing to read/hear about.

the board and cpus, are new (oem eBay deals) but the drives, video cards, psu, etc were from the prior dual Xeon build.

the prior Xeon build was new board and cpus and used prior components from earlier build etc

each build was built from what was already available / owned when possible

rinse repeat

some prior piggy-back components and builds of mine going back from last year all the way to 1999

Simple explanation, you don't. Jensen Huang personally gifted each of the 20 cards that exist to their recipients back then. At least one made its way to eBay around 5 years ago, but given OP's line of work, I wouldn't be surprised if he was one of the original recipients! I would feel immensely proud if someone like JHH even acknowledged the potential in my work, but to get that as a token of recognition, that would be SO cool.

breakers / wiring: complicated answer:
so my original plan for the day I needed more power, was to use something like a Hela R2500 W. However, ALL of the 1800w + power supplies are not as clean/efficient as the 1600 AXi .

So I have rewired the room with the higher gauge wire, and the higher breakers, so I can do the 220/240 and the 110/120. Breakers moved from 15 to the 20 and 30 variety (for oven or drier style)

BUT, I really have low confidence in the 2000w+ power supplies after extensively digging into them, reviews, specs.

So the room has both 110/120 and 220/240 and corresponding wiring and breakers, however, I have not needed to move to the higher power for the build(s) so I am still using the corsair ax1600i. for the two PCS and my sons have lower power requirements for theirs.

So I am prepared for higher power needs but did not need to move there yet. Also, I'm still not confident on the 2000W+ PSUs as of now

I tried a hela 2050R and was not impressed.

Full load on my rig has not ever gone past the 1300w peak, the 1600w axi can handle much higher peaks beyond the 1800+ (peak). The breakers and the wiring can handle it


I have, reluctantly even considered using 2 x 1600w psu on one rig in tandem, but also reluctant, (but capable).




2. Joining BOINC/F@H? I have considered it. But have not looked at it in depth. Normally I turn on my PC when I need to do something, and turn it off when I'm done. Other than waiting on a download to finish, I don't leave the PCs on. So I'll consider it. What's involved?

Distributed computing. You download project data, computer processes it, data is sent back. There are tons of different hosts with different projects like WCG has cancer marker research, had COVID research and a few others. Rosetta is out of University of Washington for protein and DNA research. Etc etc

You can set the resource usage, crunch times, limits, etc. Your previous build would do an absolute unit of work for these projects. Think of it as volunteer but it's automated and thousands of other people also do it.

I run mine in the fall and winter for heat across my (tiny compared to yours) dual Xeon, main desktop, and one or two others. Sometimes GPU tasks too depending how close I want to play with breaker limits.

It has been awhile

I still have a tall case because I prefer space for thermals and my hands to work. I almost wanted to build a dual Threadripper/Epyc but other things in life took priority.

X3D is AM5 only at this moment. Epyc chips ending in X such as the 7773x have extra cache. Similar concept but not same naming.
