It's probably clock stretching by that point. It's pushed very far, could be unstable or some protection mechanism kicking in.

Ofc ;)

I just (re)installed Windows 11 24H2, and I have a fresh CPU-Z run for you guys. I'm thermally limited, at about 300 W - my NH-D15S cannot cope with the workload even with the additional industrialPPC fan. It gets overwhelmed in the MT test

That's bold I keep my single fan NHD15S with around 250W max.

I set the thermal protection limit to 95ºC to be on the safe side, works great. Realistically what the D15S can handle with 2 fans is around 300W, I'd go down to around 280W if the load will be sustained for a very long time. My rig is on an open bench though, so there's that.

So fellas I have some really bad news. My motherboard's gone belly up. I was observing some really low voltage readings from it, with the 3.3V line below 2.8 V and 12V line at 11.3-11.4, experiencing sudden reboots and multiple stability issues regardless of the settings. Normally this screams bad PSU, but it turns out the power supply is fine and there must be some sort defective component in the power delivery line causing an excursion of some sort. I tried it on my other X99 machine, and it seems that it is outputting normal voltage ranges. On the multimeter, PSU is also fine. Likewise, I tried my other PC's PSU on my main PC, just to be greeted by telltale signs of a short-circuit, it shuts down pretty much instantly as long as the ATX cable is plugged. It'd been getting progressively worse for a few days now and it finally reached the point where it does not POST anymore. Right now I'm SOL. There goes my Arrow Lake upgrade, it's not happening at least until Panther, Lunar or whatever in 2 years from now.

Since I'm already effed, I might as well lube up and enjoy - picking something cheaper (such as the AsRock Nova that has been receiving great reviews all around) could be an option but with the way the economy and exchange rates are going in my country (situation is really bad), I'd end up with an Arrow Lake i5-tier if I waited it out and once the stock of high-end Z790s here goes, they won't be coming back. Assuming the sameish price, what would you pick:

1. Apex Encore (4999 BRL/915 USD)
2. Tachyon X (4819 BRL/882 USD)
3. Dark Hero (5239 BRL/959 USD, higher price and 4 dimmer makes this less attractive though)

The Apex Encore seems the no brainer here, it's the better endowed board with latest gen WiFi and most power stages, but the Tachy X is also a pretty solid board. Will probably buy tonight. So, what would you pick in my shoes?

Ouch, losing the Ace hurts. Sorry to hear that.

Were it me I'd personally get the PG Nova because I'm a sucker for its boatload of M.2 slots and keeping it ATX. Between the three you listed down, though, I'd get the Tachyon.

I'd - and still might do that, but the chance to get a flagship's here, and with the dollar at almost 6 bucks... no chance if I miss this window. Next batch, if it even comes, will be 2x the price, you know how it works here... I didn't see this one coming, shame, I got the Ace secondhand so no chance of warranty

I like the Tachy X too, been thinking of it

Encore is for sure the best option if you care about memory OC and a nice ASUS BIOS.

Yeah the ASUS BIOS is a BIG selling point. MSI's was okayish and Gigabyte's... I hope it's not the same as on this X99 board I have. What it has in hardware quality it lacks in BIOS quality...

TBH if your motherboard is dead I'd simply sell up and wait for Arrow Lake, use other systems in the meantime, or throw in a $100 used mobo to tide you over.

Apex Encore is what, $6-700?

Not worth for a soon to be outdated platform.

I'm sure one of the forumites will have a Z6/790 mobo lying around, I'd offer you my old X570 board but it's the wrong platform.

The bios on my H97 looks exactly the same as B660-G including menu placement and operation. The B660-G just has more crap for each page because.... features!!

asus quality of bios left after this: oh man i get old

Yeah, I remember the days of Shamino, Andre and Elmor. But ASUS still has a sizable lead in BIOS quality right now, I reckon.

I'm of a similar opinion, regardless of whether I buy a high-end or a cheap board it's horrible value considering that Arrow Lake is only a few months away. What I am concerned about is our currency's performance. Any plan that involves waiting might backfire due to volatile economy and unpredictable taxation since the government is basically charging what it wants lately. An expensive mess can quickly become a very expensive mess. Third world countries are wild like that.

Not sure about Gigabyte. Haven't had one of their boards since 990FX UD7 honestly.

Yeah, the chip won't degrade from sustained load unless it's operating way out of its electrical and thermal specification. Pretty insightful stuff trying these out on exotic cooling. I got mine because I like having some CPU grunt but at the same time wanted something that was well-behaved and could undervolt well, to that end, it delivered all I wanted :)
Well - after a fun weekend, I can tell you with a lot of confidence that anything at or above 1.4v will degrade the chip - even at very very light loads (below 100 watts). Tested it for 5 minutes, and yeah - from 1.08v im now at 1.16 for stability

Edit: Assuming you dont want to wait for Arrow.

Yeah, this is an expensive mess I got myself into... I'll be mulling it over before I pull the trigger but, I'm probably gonna buy the Apex alongside a traditional case. Arrow Lake is nice, but the i9-13900KS perfectly satisfies my computing needs, so there's that. My Ace might have been damaged by ESD or something, since it was always out in the open. I've done a visual inspection on it using a magnifying glass, but nothing seems to be wrong with it to the naked eye.

Well - after a fun weekend, I can tell you with a lot of confidence that anything at or above 1.4v will degrade the chip - even at very very light loads (below 100 watts). Tested it for 5 minutes, and yeah - from 1.08v im now at 1.16 for stability

Oof, that was quick o_O

Must be a potato. Seen my 13 and 14th gen chips over 1.45v on auto. Especially if using Asus performance enhancement which is generally enabled by default.

I think that the ~1.4 range is only applied to the CPU when the current is low, I can definitely see 1.45+ degrading a chip if it's both hot and under a high current stress, just didn't think it'd be that quick

Don't think it's that quick....

Well my OC board is out and the 14700K in the B660-G was reporting 1.440v in bios which would be at least 1 core loaded cause in windows the idle temp is lower than bios's.

And mines been at 1.70v..... closer to 1.6v all core over 6ghz.

Seems fine. Minor .2 discrepancy is nothing to worry over twice tested I think.

Without discrediting what is more than likely an intelligent on the ground read of all deciding factors.

Advisement to put aside the same upgrade fever depleting stock of discontinued platform world wide and reexamine the question? Isn't outside rational thought. A brand new mobo was passed over once already. The real sticking point is being able to grab a new board tonight but making the statement it is a one and done rush to get boards at release.

Perhaps relevant enough to post in this thread without owning an SE chip would be mentioning recent activity in here got me looking at 12900KS. At performance relative to 13/14 900KS and erosion of pricing for new (suspected lower binning) and used examples. Simply as a fun pairing for RTX 3080 that justified a little nicer Z board and the benchmarking cycle (to attain experience more relevant to this site than anything I've done in a decade).

The 12900KS is a great deal if you can find it for a nice price. It's very similar to the i7-13700K in performance. You'll love it :)

But yeah, I get the gist of it and I'm in agreement, the big problem is knowing if prices will hold out in our volatile economy. That's why the timing sucks so much, normally I could wait 3 months over with my X99 machine, even though it can't hold 60 fps steady even on a game like Genshin Impact at a quarter of the resolution I normally play at. An option would be to buy a X670E board and get a Ryzen 9950X when those come out next month, but that'd still require me to sell my 13900KS... o_O

Polite means of expressing it can be Summer indoors during all seasons while also forecasting lowered expectations compared to a newer i7 during daily usage.

You'll make the right decision. 13th gen is already proving more durable than 14th (and leagues ahead of 12th) so it comes down to what direction is the right one for you going forwards.

Kept my 12900KS at 5.0 / ~1.2xV since I got it and its still going strong, hasn't had any degradation that I know of.

Sure another 300-400 MHz might be nice but I don't know if I'd notice the speed, but I would definitely notice the heat!

If it's 1.45 on idle the voltage will drop under load. I'm telling you, I literally just tested 1.4 and 1.45v load voltages, after a run of the ff benchmark with the cpu pulling 100 watts max it threw bsods on my 24/7 settings. Had to both drop clocks on the cache and increase voltage to boot into windows.

Not sure which part degraded, looks like it's only the cache but I have to test this further. But the cache is now at a permanent 3.6, if I try any higher it bsods.
