If it's 1.45 on idle the voltage will drop under load. I'm telling you, I literally just tested 1.4 and 1.45v load voltages, after a run of the ff benchmark with the cpu pulling 100 watts max it threw bsods on my 24/7 settings. Had to both drop clocks on the cache and increase voltage to boot into windows.

Not sure which part degraded, looks like it's only the cache but I have to test this further. But the cache is now at a permanent 3.6, if I try any higher it bsods.
Cache at 3.6?
I'm missing something.

Is this under-volt and LLC on auto?

Edit. Or can you list the settings?

It's a 12900k. Was running 1.08 at 4.9/4/4. Now I'm stuck at 4.9/4/3.6 at 1.16v.

Yes it's undervolted, lite load 1 llc 4.

Interesting. Sry, I don't under-volt often, I would expect degradation from the opposite.

Can you run the cache VID manually? Set it to 1.35v and just under-volt the cores.

It didn't degrade from undervolting. Maybe you missed something, let me clarify.

The 24/7 stable settings I've been running for 2 years have been 4.9 / 4 /4 at 1.08 volts. Then last week I run a few very light benchmarks (less than 100w power draw) at 1.4 and 1.45 volts. After running at those voltages for around 5-10 minutes the CPU heavily degraded and now it can only do 4.9/4/3.6 at 1.16 volts.

If you aren't undervolting then you won't notice the degradation since at stock the CPU was running at 1.26 volts anyways.

EG1. I can give it another go at 1.45 volts and see where that gets me, for science purposes, although I'd prefer not to kill the CPU

Well you gave it some steroids and it just wants more now. :nutkick:
Takes a lot to kill one of these processors.

I think you may just need better cooling. (And maybe a 14th gen...)

Nah, temperatures were fine, it's a very light workload. Wasn't even at 70s if I remember correctly

Aren't they ALL special....in their own, quirky, unrelentless little ways :)

I've had every one on the list and other than the somewhat higher OC headroom, I did NOT see anything else particularly "special" about them.....

But overall, the 9900KS I had was da bomb IMO, since I got it up to 5.3Ghz on AIO cooling, albeit with considerable tinkering :D

Well hopefully you can figure out if it's actually degraded or maybe something else was/is at play.

Might be one of those deals you bring the voltage down slowly like you did when testing with a few restarts in between. Perhaps it's not a set it and forget it UV? I mean you did say after 2 years you decided to go nuts and run 1.4-1.45v but didn't you didnt' say why you wanted to run this v-core.

You should now be able to run your RAM at 7600 guaranteed, 8-8200 MT possibly, depending on how good your CPU IMC is.

I think that's an excellent choice for riding out the last of the monolithic, no AI CPUs. If you had anything but a KS, it probably would have been wise to just grab an entry level board and limp along until a true comparison between Arrow Lake-S and Granite Ridge could be had.

I'll be keeping the Encore and the 14900KS for the foreseeable future, even if it gets moved to second PC or other uses.

I'll definitely give it a try! I will be happy with low latency 7200 though :)

Tuned 7600/8000+ is lower latency than tuned 7200 MT.

Like so.

The one I have is rated 6800 C34, but my Ace never managed to be stable using its XMP set. I had been running it at 6400 C30, and ironically enough, the last thing I did with it before it croaked was a memory test lol - I had just about gotten 6400 C30 down to perfection

Excellent choice :rockout: Was tempted to get one myself but stayed with my OG Z790 Apex :pimp:

Let's see you break some world records!

Cens used the Z790 Apex Encore: G.SKILL OC World Cup 2024 Grand Final: CENS Wins OC Champion Title | TechPowerUp

The Encore also broke the GHz world record.

The only negative with the Z790 Apex's is you can't use the iGPU on the CPU as the rear I/O doesn't support it.

Have fun and enjoy ;)

No chance of doing WRs here, I just wanted a solid platform

OG Apex is beautiful, love the white PCB. Would be even better for my build since I'm going with a white build, but it's long since out of stock here. I only found an used one listed that was "previously repaired", not touching that :D

That's the idea, anyway. Besides, I like my computer like I like my women, mature, reliable and ready for action
But where do you stick the USB to update them?

EG1. I can give it another go at 1.45 volts and see where that gets me, for science purposes, although I'd prefer not to kill the CPU

you are not special guys, the failure rate is just very high in general, now swapping thousands of failing cpus that is sure efficient

That didn't happen on 13th or 14th gen, those were fine. It happened on a 12900k

I got a 12700kf that was not able to take 3200 ddr4 gear1 at any SA, had to sell it with 5600 ddr5 gear2

I got defective OOB 12500 and other die during testing before shipping, other dead after 3/4 months of use. And i always undervolt and power limit every system i sell to make them durable.

Was not the case with previous gen intel cpus, the failure rate is just higher, that's it.

GN just interviewed Wendell. I must say, the issue is much worse than I imagined. Thankfully, I have not experienced any major stability issues with my personal sample. Hopefully Intel will get to the bottom of this. If they end up doing a hardware revision, though, I expect 13th Gen chips that are RMA'd to be replaced by 14th Gen equivalents on the updated stepping.
