I just think of my PC like a muscle car. It's not about efficiency, it's about power, and power it's got
Can I call the 7800X3D an Audi with a turbo charged diesel then?

its not like everyone has "NO" money to pay electricity bills, don't drag this to another AMD vs INTEL efficiency race. I personally have 2 binned 13900KS's and I am pretty happy using them....period!! I only pay around 80-90$ a month on Electricity bill (that's with AC and water chiller usage)
Okay fair enough
But 6ghz on 10nm is kinda crazy in terms of voltage needed

Stop the OT post please, go somewhere with your X3D.

Nothing's crazy if you can cool it properly, this is the mentality you need to stuff onto your daily life, not the likes of "OOHhhhhh Intel is crap, don't buy intel coz its hot and sips 1 jigawutts of power" kind of mindset, Ryzen idles higher than Intel if you're not too observant, with C_States ON, my I9's only idle at 12-15w, the X3D idles on what? 30-40w..my 7950X as well idles higher than the i9..so everyone "has" issues of their own..

There's a bundle deal here for a Z690 Formula and a 12900KS for 700€. While my current daily system has a 5800X3D in it and swapping to a 12900KS would provide next to zero if any at all gaming gains except in FFXIV which i play alot of and Intel seems to shine in that game, i'm still genuinely tempted to try out Intel for gaming and system tinkering, also helps that 12th Gen has avoided the "current Intel situation". I already have a G.Skill Trident Z5 Royal 2x16GB 6400C32 RAM kit waiting so the maximum supported for the chipset. What do you guys think?

Mmm, with the Z690 Formula that is really a good deal. I think you will enjoy it, the 12900KS is an exceedingly powerful CPU, provided you can keep it cool. It's not as hot as the Raptor Lake chips, but it is an amazing CPU nonetheless.

Your RAM is great and will fit like a glove on the Z690 platform. If you want to try, I'd say it's probably one of the best combinations of Intel hardware right now, since it's unaffected by the issues that Raptor chips found. I would give it an honest try, if you end up disappointed, you can always flip it - the 12900KS will be a desirable chip for some time I reckon, for people who insist on maximum reliability and want an upgrade.

the 12900KS

In all honesty, I would be looking at the 14700k as you will get the 4 extra e cores. Why you ask??? Well....

I'm pretty sure even if you limit the cpu to the 12900KS speeds it will run cooler and prob less watts as it is better silicon. The now new 5 year warranty comes into play which the 12900KS doesn't have and you can even bios flash the latest micro code update to be even more on the safe side.

The biggest issue would be price but from what I've seen online all these 13th/14th gens are going cheap coz people are scared their cpu's are going to burn up and selling them cheap lol.

Sry, just my 2c.

To be fair Makina was asking a question regarding the 12900KS, fun chip!

Oh you do have a point but considering it's a bundle that's coming with a Maximus Formula and the CPU for basically the cost of just the motherboard it's an interesting deal. Of course there's probably wiser ways to spend 700€ right now if you don't want or need a motherboard of that caliber

I know, but he doesn't need to include the TLDR with X3D. I wanted to share a piece of my mind back there, but I just held back. TBH, there's nothing scary with the 13th or 14th gen i9 parts if you know what you're doing. That's just me!!, I've been with those 2 platforms, both with their own caveats, nothing seems perfect, I just feel comfortable going with Intel, and specifically my 2 KS's (13900KS) all you folks just getting hyped up by watching too much dumb YTubers who doesn't know a thing or 2 on fixing crap themselves.

Agreed, there is a LOT of FUD surrounding the Intel chips right now. Mine has been fine.

It's alright. I just wanted to bring up the starting point to hear your thoughts of going from said chip to the 12900KS. Personally not against 13/14 series either and i don't mind tinkering with the build, PC's are my hobby after all, just that their prices here in Finland are still a bit too high to my liking. Btw there's another bundle here in our local tech store with a Z690 Taichi (not a low-tier board either) and the 12900KS for 600€. No bundles for 13/14 series at all. I guess the store is trying to empty their stock of Z690 and 12th gen.

Yeah, and that Z690 is a particularly great one. 20x 105A, preinstalled block, 10GbE and ALC4082, doesn't get better than that!

Amazing, really. Most I can pair locally would be a 12900K (non-S) with a Z690 Hero for roughly $750. Dropping from the Hero to the Z690-E cuts a good $90 from that, though.

as long as your 12900KS is golden you should be fine, memory controller wise, if you get a good bin for IMC, your lucky seeing around 7200MT's the least, these Intel parts (Alder and Raptor Lake) do enjoy seeing the RAM speeds north of 7000MT's, they scale pretty well.

With Z690 (even Maximus Formula) 7000 range is very optimistic, but you should be able to run 6400 C30 or 6800 C32 with ease

I ran my Z690E-Strix with my golden IMC 13600k 7400MT's before I call it quits with the board, when I slapped my 13600K onto Z790 Apex Encore it does 8000MT's max with its IMC..I can technically boot 7600MT's on the Z690E Strix but it won't get any kind of stability confirmation from ycruncher nor OCCT, but 7400MT's does pass ycruncher and OCCT..

my 2 samples of 13900KS can easily go north of 8400MT's as they do currently 8400MT's like cheese (low voltages and very good timings, 8400MT's CL36 actually, 1 sample has IMC SP of 84 and the other has 80)

My Gigabyte UD AX DDR4 had hot VRM, so I took it apart and replaced the thermal pad with Arctic TP-3.

Before the thermal pad replacement, when running Prime95 Small FFT AVX2 the temperature was at 72C with 22C ambient (with an Arctic P12 Max fan blowing directly on the VRM). After the replacement, the maximum temperature dropped to 56C under the same conditions.

This does tell us one thing: Thermal pads from the factory are usually shit.

Due to the lower VRM temperature, I also gain a few watts of space for not reaching PL 320W.

Super glad i waited, there was a bundle deal at a local tech store for a Z790 Aorus Master and the 14900KS for 700€, had to grab them for that price, the damn CPU is normally 800€ alone here. Already sold the Master and got a 2nd hand Apex Encore for 380€.

Life is good.

Whoa 380 euros for an Apex Encore is a steal, did it come with all the accessories too?

Ya it did and a receipt for warranty. It was used for 6 months. Board looked to be in mint condition and the place it was bought from is 5km away from where i live so RMA will be a breeze if something does go wrong with it.
