It's a shame really that this is so overdue, so overhyped, and unltimately so irrelevant.

Props to Noctua for an over-engineered, high-quality part that improves on the original - but it's 5 years late; We've had this kind of performance for a long time already and it can look better than this, be a third the price of this, and come in more variants and options than this.

It's a great cooler for sure, but for all the expensive additional engineering that went into the offset, asymmetrical fin stack, the additional lower fins that capitalise on getting closer to the base plate, the LCP fans, the improved, offset mounting solution - it ultimately doesn't make it stand out in any way. It's a middle-of-the-pack also ran that will never get to the top of the charts where 360mm AIOs sit.

Air coolers don't have to cost over $50 to be absolutely excellent. At under $100 you can run circles around an air cooler with some of the more cost-effective 360mm AIOs because there simply isn't any "replacement for displacement" and no matter how good the D15 G2 is, it's ultimately bottlenecked by the diminishing returns of heatpipes and the limited room to fit a heatsink in the constrained space of a CPU socket.

What is the exact point of this chunk of metal that costs 149€ beside that you can say : i have best air cooler on the market ?
That's like saying "I have the fastest pedal bicycle at this motorbike race." :)

Expensive air coolers simply can't compete now that good 360mm AIOs are barely more expensive. The economies of scale and mass-production mean that $50 is about as much as an air cooler can cost before it stops making any sense to most people.

Way to show how utterly tone deaf you are Noctua. While the competition out sells you 10000 to 1, you punch back with the $150 baby poop G2? C'mon. So inevitably the chromax version, (that will actually sell to every Noctua fan out there) will cost $50 more and wont be available for another year or two (knowing the slow as dirt release schedule Noctua sticks to). Yay for the already way too late G2, I guess?

The competition continues to pound you into obscurity with their excellent price to performance heatsinks and AIOs. Enjoy the very short 3c lead. The competition doesn't take 10 year naps before responding.

Sorry if this seems harsh, I really do like your gear when it's priced sanely. But you've had all the time in the world and all you could muster was 3c for $150...no thanks.

I'm still waiting for that to restock in the US at its particularly-suspicious, bait-and-switch MSRP, or for it to appear anywhere in Europe at all. Nothing else in ID-cooling's lineup is priced the same way and if you were to price it based on other models in ID-Cooling's range, it would probably be a $50 cooler.

You're missing the point.

It's not ONLY about performance: it's about performance AND low noise.

Unfortunately for Noctua, there are similarly performing WITH as low noise coolers on the market RIGHT NOW @ better prices, which is why ... @ THIS PRICE, this is a poor offering.

The warranty + future socket adapters don't justify THIS MUCH of a premium, IMO.

Yes,look at the noise page again at this test ) Yes you may pay for design and warranty, but it is so much .

At this price tag, it is DOA, no matter how much PR/marketing BS/ads they push onto the poor users' throats.. :kookoo:

It certainly is an interesting product for enthusiasts while most will be better served with Deepcool and Thermalright.

What exactly do you like in Deepcool, so that you didn't mention Arctic, for instance? :shadedshu:

i was hoping for 32 heatpipes..... disappointed

Technically, you are right. If they can make thinner but multiple heat pipes, it would be better.
They can squeeze 3-4 thin heat pipes in the place of this bulky one made here.

In the current market the only way I'd pay that much is if one of the factories was in my hometown or something. I might pay 75-100usd if it was made somewhere in the USA or EU. But at 150$ and 'designed' in Austria, really not flying anymore with the competition they're up against.

The GN video review covers this if you haven’t see it yet. In summary the towers perform within margin of error to one another (was something <1c if I remember correctly), the improvement is largely in the new fans.

Austria is in the EU. What actual hardware components or competing products are even made in the US? Most are made in Asia.

Kinda proves that air coolers are a solved technology and there isn’t much improvement to be had. Noctua worked on this for years, over-engineered it to hell and it’s ridiculously pricey - all for a minor bump in performance over the cheaper competitors. It’s in no way a bad cooler, but it goes to show that you can buy pretty much any of the top-tiers nowadays and be set. Swap the fans if you want. It’s all within a margin.

Was my point, just didn't make it very well. They're all made in China or Taiwan. The support alone isn't worth the 3-5x price hike.

I'm all for paying a premium to get a decent product with good support or even just a company with a track record of not being complete assholes. But there's a limit to that premium.

Because there are bottlenecks elsewhere. There are TIM, IHS, then direct-touch / larger base, then different types of heat pipes, different heatsink fins arrangement and design, and then the fans.
But your bottleneck is the TIM and IHS. You need to have these tests done with delidded CPUs.

It’s an irrelevant test for 99.9% of the customer base. It’s a potentially dangerous out-of-spec physical modification. That’s like saying that all sports cars should be tested on racing slicks and with engines pumped full of NOS to remove potential bottlenecks.

Saying this as a noctua customer, although I love my U12A, the noctua tax is pretty absurd. Still, I love the top tier engineering as always.

Because it has to be done on a manufacturer level.

This is stupid. What you test here is similar to testing a VW Polo vs. Mercedes S vs. Ferrari vs. Bugatti Veyron on a track with 50 km/h speed limit :D

Indeed, at £150 I would not be looking at buying this, I would rather get an artic 420 LFII and still have £40 left over for a pint and some nosh down the pub.
