Unless your motherboard has U.2 ports (and afaik there's few of them on "mainstream" sockets), you'd need a PCI-e adapter card.

Yeah the 1.5TB variant was on sale like this earlier. It's a bulk pack drive so you will need an m.2 adapter.

The 960GB drive is full retail and comes with an intel branded adapter.

Yes, but it's still unbeatable in random IO at low queue depths. Some of the fastest real world performance drives on the market, and they are dumping inventory but who knows for how long. They won't be coming back.

What, now the motherboards don't have integrated Optane thingy then we have to buy adapter, it's total mess, earlier they forced us to buy their contrroller integrated on each motherboards that nobody buyed the SSDs to go with (pricy) !!!! Intel/inside, yeah, for good.

In fact, so many people liked confusing them that im quite sure this has directly contributed to the commercial failure of Optane SSDs. People really hate reading things.

Those who are afraid of cooling - It does not get particularly hot under standard use cases. An open and reasonably ventilated space is more than enough.

To be fair, Intel did an Intel when it came to market it, one after the other by pulling the same stunt they did with the Core 2 Solo.
Sure, Avg.Joe does not read, but you'd still have to pay a real deal of attention not to get the Cache over the SSD, when one was shinier/newer than the other and stores were not doing a great job at listing them either.

Yeah they're "dumping inventory" so hard that the Optane drives are still at least 5x the price of standard NVMe SSDs for equal capacity.

Optane didn't fail because it was poorly marketed; it failed because it's unjustifiably expensive for what it offers, and because Intel was never willing to subsidise it enough to gain the critical mass of market adoption needed for XPoint memory to be manufactured in quantities that made it economical. Just another legacy of Intel's lost decade of greed.

Reminds me of my M.2 in my NUC.

But yeah enterprise stuff tends to have less thought put into it on power and heat. I have seen many enterprise storage that have no low power mode at all in their default state.

This doesnt have to do much with the topic. Optane SSDs (none cache drives) are fully standalone drives based on 3D Xpoint tech.
You can use an Optane SSD as a general purpose / OS drive on much older machines.

I mean there is no 2TB nvme flash to my knowledge for 60 bucks which would be what you are claiming unless you want to prove me wrong.

Although I don't like the small capacity the consistent I/O, much greater endurance, and PLP seems to make it perfect for my VM use. I'm burning though my 2TB 980 Pro at a much faster rate now with maintenance and backups although still within the 0.3 TBW per day.
