Is AMD starting to adopt the 12V-2x6 connector?

So I'm looking at two SKUs:
ASRock Creator Radeon RX 7900 XT 20GB GDDR6 PCI Express 4.0 ATX Video Card RX7900XT CT 20G
ASRock Creator Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24GB GDDR6 PCI Express 4.0 ATX Video Card RX7900XTX CT 24G

They're both 7900 series ASRock model AMD cards and they appear to be blower style.

I don't see any listing on TPU but the real interesting thing that caught my attention was this:

Never seen that on an AMD card before and I guess it makes sense that I haven't.
The 7000 series is just new enough to get it and these are the only two big power cards in that list.
Is it just an ASRock thing or a sign of more to come?

Obviously everyone will follow this design. AMD didn't last gen cause their cards were already ready before the connector, and they just used it as a marketing point.

Asrock has been the only AIB so far to use that crappy connector. I hope that AMD will stay with the traditional PCIe connectors; they've been around for 20 years and proven to work perfectly.

It's definitely put together like an accelerator. Like that's a REALLY good position for the power connector. That's awesome. Wish we could get more cards that have better connector positioning like that. Just a little alarming that the first ones I would see on the series of card that I actually want would push for this particular connector.

Yep, makes it easier to replace an existing NVidia card or add one to an OEM system by the manufacture or end system user.

I hope they do not use with the RX 8X00 cards, but I have a feeling that they will have too at some point as it gets pushed by Intel and Nvidia.

It's only ASRock with a handful of very specific models for now. To really answer the question, we'll have to see RDNA 4 first.

Long: The perpetual race to the bottom, there's always someone out there that looks at one thing, thinks "I bet I can do it for cheaper, why pay someone else?" and makes an attempt; sometimes the outcome is better, sometimes worse. Since we're well into the era of diminishing returns there are more bad outcomes than good.

This is for high voltage low current. We need high current low voltage

The 2x6 connector does not fry even if you intentionally try to do it.

It is safe, and IMHO its industry-wide adoption is to be expected

Back in 2002/2003 the ATi Radeon/All In Wonder 9700 Pro had the pig tail facing that position.

I kind of like it, though my board power tops out at around 400w, so I am not really that worried about power all that much.

I say this would be a decent card to go straight to water cooling too

It doesn't have as good of a margin of safety. It will fail when traditional 6-pin and 8-pin connectors won't. Any place a 2x6 connector is okay, traditional connectors are better.

No, AIBs are. 12V-2x6 will replace all other connectors for the simple fact that it's cheaper to use a single 2x6 connector versus multiple 8- and 6-pin connectors. It also significantly simplifies logistics and stock management because you only need 1 connector for all SKUs, versus a hodgepodge conglomeration of 8- and 6-pin. For the same reason as the latter, manufacture becomes cheaper because it's quicker and easier (in terms of pick and place machine programming) to install one connector versus multiple, so AIBs can make more GPUs in less time.

i kinda agree with you ...

nonetheless i was glad to see my non ref RX 7900 XTX did not use the "over the top" 3x8pin configuration and instead followed the AMD ref design and used the more compact 2x8pin

well ... 12v-2x6 ... why not ... it will be more compact than a 2x8pin ... although i will have to change my 8pin 90° angled adapter and... probably not the PSU but the extension yeah ...

This connector could have been crisping up AMD cards this last gen and I'd still give it a wide berth this coming product cycle until it's certain the teething issues are a thing of the past.
