7800X3D - temps with PS 120 EVO?

Hey, guys! What’s your temps on 7800X3D with Thermalright Phantom Spirit EVO? Anyone who changed AIO for this cooler? I had H150i Capellix XT and ordered a new PS120 EVO. With my previous AIO H150 Capellix my temps were 60-70C gaming , Cinebench R23 80-85C. But I am quite worried what temps can I expect with PS120 EVO.

I don't have any experience with this cooler on my 7800X3D but one thing I've noticed about this CPU is that no matter how much cooling you throw at it, it can only dissipate x amount of heat. There's a thread on another forum that talks about this and simply put seems like the IHS just can't dissipate more than a certain amount of heat. I have had different setups on mine and none cool any better than the other. I had a triple rad custom loop, I've had a 240 AIO (very briefly) and I now have the 360 AIO in my specs and they all cool the same. I would think temps are just as good on the Thermal right, than they were with the Corsair. Hopefully somebody with that cooler and a 7800X3D can chime in.

Just drop a 40 dollar peerless assassin on it and call it a day. Its what Ill do. No frills air cooling ftw.

Just to say.

Gamers Nexus also talked about the AM5 IHS on one of their videos and said the same thing. The TL;DR is that the AM5 IHS is pretty thick. Much to the point where it doesnt matter what sort of cooling you use once you reach a certain point because the IHS cant transfer heat away from the bare die any faster. (laws of thermal resistance...)

I wouldnt worry about the 120 Evo. What I would do is do some PBO curve optimising if you havent done that already. You'll probably see more of a difference by doing that. Lower voltage = less heat. less heat = more performance i.e more boost.

:EDIT::

With that said. Temps could be improved if you lapped the IHS. But thats a lot of work for not a whole lot of gain unless youre chasing thermals down to the last 1'c

What @Chicken Patty said is correct. Zen CPUs are well known for being fairly hard to cool. Note that it doesn’t mean “they run hot”, no, they are efficient chips and X3D specifically in most workloads will be very low wattage (and, as such, produce comparatively little heat). But the high thermal density due to a small compute die, that die being off-center, aggressive boost behavior, thick IHS for AM4 cooler compatibility and, for X3D, added cache on top leads to temperatures that might be higher than you’d think, but absolutely normal for those chips. Don’t think in terms of “how low can I go”, those times are behind us. Think “can I plop down a cooler, set it to auto PWM to not care and always be comfortably below the thermal throttle”. If the answer is yes - you are fine and shouldn’t concern yourself. And a PS120 on a 7800X3D will absolutely be fine.

I've a Peerless Assassin and max temps I've seen are 82C on cinebench multi threaded.

I bet the Phantom Spirit will do the trick

Maybe i'm mistaken, isn't the 7-heatpipe phantom spirit a successor to the peerless assassin? Both are priced similarly under $40/£40. If not, other then the 6/7 heatpipe count and the PS performing a little better in full load tests what else sets them apart?

Also depending on where you are in the world, the "EVO" variant (phantom spirit) with more premium fans can also be had for a similar price. £41 in the UK

In my experience, AIOs (at least some of them) don't work well with the 7800X3D. It throttled badly under my 280 mm be quiet Silent Loop 2, but it's totally fine with the Dark Rock 4. I have no clue why this is.

Yep had a similar issue with an X62 on the 5800X3D or perhaps with age (7 years) it fell in the reduced efficacy camp. I picked up a ALFIII 360 with that sweet offset mount to catch the hot weather over the silicon die which is not centred under the IHS. Great results!

Yes. Phantom is kinda newer and a little improved Pearless Assassin. One heatpipe more, bigger baseplate and improved fans, maybe even something else. Costing the same, so now you just buy Phantom Spirit instead. Or EVO which also has some advantages. Hard to keep up with Thermalright, though ;)

Seems like you all agree with what I said. Yeah I did a great custom loop because I enjoy it and like to, but eventually simplified it with an AIO since it's my daily driver. I am tempted to try air one day. Maybe when the next X3D chips come out and depending how they do on air I might give it a go since I have to remove the cooler anyways. But to the OP, any of the air coolers recommended will cool it no issue.

Yep, TRs are all over the place... even single tower TR coolers have like a bunch of variants and the price difference too small to make any sense of it. I guess if they're improving/adding to their game in small increments whilst conserving affordability, it does have its merits. Just a little more work for the buyer to identify what is what to get the absolute best for the money.

TR in general aims to hurt competition with dragging the prices down to levels rivals rather can't afford. TR produces themselves more of their cooler components than competition, so they are able to sell them cheaper. They debut one after another negligibly better cooler just to make some noise in pc sphere. Crazy variability I would suspect being about increasing likelihood of meeting visual likings and compatibility. This TR's deep dive into value territory is interesting - ten years ago they costed like Noctua. Few years from now may only make things worse for now loving TR value oriented croud. And then they will start rising prices.
