As the title says, I updated my motherboard BIOS and now my CPU is running hotter at idle. I have a 5800x3D and yes I know they run hot but I had this thing at a nice 32-34c idle but now its at 48-51c idle.

I made sure to re do all of the settings i changed in bios like pbo etc but still no luck, I've even switched back to an older bios in case it was the newer bios that had an issue but still getting the same temps.

Anyone had this happen before or have any ideas on what's causing this? My aio is fine because this spike in temp only happened once the bios got updated and i have checked to make sure the pump is working and fans are all working etc.

but now its at 48-51c idle.

wild because my test system with a 5800x3d idles at about this and seeing all the temp threads regarding ryzen I just assumed it was normal and deal with it.

Yeah just doesn’t seem right for me considering it’s gone up so much after a BIOS update. I used to run a peerless assassin 120 before this aio and even with that I would be around 38-40 idle. Since I got this aio and replaced stock fans with noctua I would be at low 30’s.

What is confusing me more is that since idle temps have gone up, temps while gaming are still roughly the same.

FWIW my 5700X3D idles at 32-34C and my 5800X3D at similar temps, ID Cooling SE 224 XTS and 226 XD air coolers, respectively. I haven't updated BIOS recently though and in my cheap B450s there'll likely not be more BIOS updates.

Your SOC and Core Currents are about twice mine (5700X3D) but package power is only about 5W higher. Your core powers are notably higher though not very high (0.937 W average vs my 0.180) You're running 3600 MHz memory to my 3200 so that may account for a bit of extra SOC power though I'm not sure where that power is accounted for. Still I'm running 35C in a 24C room, not 47C.

It does "feel" like it could be a small cluster of settings changes that the CMOS reset could fix, but if I were you I'd want another opinion on that first.

BIOSes after AGESA 1206c have increased default voltages for the 5800X3D from what they were before, so it's possible it has some part in the increased temps.

This is straight up not idle. Actually idling is 0W or near 0W on Core Power. 11W SOC Power is not exactly ideal but it's whatever for 1.1V VSOC. If cores were actually idle, then you would be down in the low to mid 20W region which is fine.

Check your background processes. I don't think I'd go as far as to reseat the cooler yet, before you get to the bottom of what is causing 6W of Core Power at "idle".

Removed cmos battery and installed a bios from a few months ago (the one I think I was using before) but still no luck, all I have running in the background is steam, nzxt cam, fan control software, Icue. All the same programs that I had running before bios update earlier. No idea what’s causing it now..

As in, check task manager and sort by utilization to see what is consuming the resources.......

Cores Power doesn't just fall out of the sky. And yes the 5800X3D V-F curve was revised starting in AGESA 1207, but it should still not really affect idle characteristics. If something is drawing 6W, then....it's drawing 6W, lol. idk how FanControl behaves, but neither iCue and CAM have garnered a stellar reputation as well-behaving background programs.

But if your BIOS settings were not wiped in the update, then do it manually. There's a reason why updates usually remove all your profiles in addition to a CMOS reset.

You don't do CMOS reset by removing the battery. Just bridge the pins. On some Gigabyte AM4 boards it may not actually complete the process until you bridge the pins, unplug from the wall and drain power by pressing the power button while unplugged. Still should not be removing the battery.

still running at 46c, nothing else more is running than before the bios update. all i have running in the background here is nzxt cam, afterburner and fan control. they use basically nothing and again i had all these running before i did the bios update. i did try to reset by connecting the two pins but wasnt working, so just removed the battery and also repasted cpu and reseated cooler in case it was that just to clear my mind.

Well, the mild lightly threaded antimalware service running should honestly account for it. Unless it's running for multiple days for whatever reason, things seem normal.

That's fine and all that you've tried a number of things for troubleshooting. I'm just saying that what you're seeing is not idle, period. Something is hogging some CPU cycles.

You can monitor individual core Effective Clocks in HWInfo to get a sense for idle. At idle most of the cores should be at double digit or lower effective freq. The two CPPC2 preferred cores (ranked #1) can be a bit higher as windows processes and other background apps tend to sit on them. But all in all, Core Power should not exceed 1-2W at most. Anything more and the CPU is not in an idle state but in low load.

If flashing back to an earlier BIOS has not changed the behaviour at all, then it's clearly just something going on (temporarily, hopefully) in Windows that happened to coincide with a BIOS update. Windows has many scheduled services that tend to come on during perceived "downtime" (e.g. search indexer), which can really wreak havoc on your data if you happen to also be trying to get HWInfo CPU data at the time.

I'll fire up my 5800X3D setup to get some HWInfo screenshots to try and illustrate

what tabasco said

but really your temps under load are better then fine so do ya really care ?

i could not overclock my x99 setup after a windows microcode update and rolled back but lost security - so just ..........

Still motherboard dependent, always good to read the manual.

Ok I’ve launched HWinfo again today, as well as open task manager to see what is using the most on the cpu. It seems that antimalware is running much more than before, I’ve never noticed it running so much when I’ve opened task manager in the past. I just turned off virus protection for a second in settings to see what happened and my temps have gone all the way back down to low 30’s.

I took a video of it as I think it’s a better way to show the process in real time I’ll get a link posted to the video as soon as it’s up.

I’m sure that it’s this antimalware windows process now. screenshot below is once its turned off.

I reset my pc and did a full reinstall with fresh settings. Issue has now gone, no idea why windows defender went all weird after a bios update but issue seems to of gone now. Thanks to those who replied trying to help
