Hey all. My 8700k, despite running 5.1ghz all core, is no longer cutting the cheese for me.
So I've decided to upgrade with an eye on the 9700x
I haven't had an AMD system since my old 2800+ Barton core back in the day.
My question is this, should I wait for the new AMD motherboards or stick with
something that has been out for a while , like the x670 to drop a 9700x in?

For whatever it's worth, I'll be re-using my 2080Ti with this new amd system, until the 5000 line comes out.
This system will be primarily a 1440p gaming rig

Thanks for any advice!

if it was me I would wait for new mobos that I knew were tested to work with the 9700x or a better price on an older mobo I had my eye on knowing its replacement is about to launch

Agreed. To add to this if there's a scenario where you come across an older motherboard at a stupid low price you could always just get the 7800X3D instead.

7000 AMD is cheaper than next, wait 9000's out then choose your AM5 7000 parts i'd say (there will be offers).

B650E and thats' enough for the MBoard.

It's struggling in titles like Cyberpunk2077 and a few MMO style games. Fallout76 and WoW in particular
how? can you gives us some examples? i think that cpu is a good match and
they come from pretty much same timeline...if you would play at 1080p new cpu might help but for now that gpu and that cpu is a good combo.

define struggling in cyberpunk? You would be close to GPU limited there with a 2080ti @ 1440p. The MMOs, sure it help assuming there are no other upstream issues (often there are) but with that GPU and 1440p you would most likely* see the exact same performance with a 9600x as you would 9700x. If you planned on a GPU upgrade in the near future (1-3) year that would be a different story.

*reviews have yet to come out

Stutters, very low dips, all around sluggish feelings. I cannot stand 1080p and refuse to go backwards lol, no offense to anyone who enjoys that resolution.

I will be upgrading from my 2080Ti to something along the lines of the 5080 whenever that comes out.

9700x* (once again no reviews but we can guess) should solve your cyberpunk issue and have no issue on the hardware side of running MMOs

when you will be upgrading to gtx 5080 write us then we will help you to choose proper cpu till then enjoy your current setup....if you will still be getting those stutters maybe hdmi 2.0 is failing.

tbh if I were doing a gaming build right now I would go with a 7800X3D and call it a day. I know the 9800X3D is on the way and will probably be a little faster but the way I look at is I can either have more than enough for gaming for at least 4 years or a little more than more than enough if I wait on the 9800X3D. Either way I still end up with more than enough for gaming.

Try to survive until Sep/Oct 2024 when X3D and "new" X870/B850 boards will be launched. Than the whole picture will be clear so you can pick best bangs for buck. You should not trust leaks and leaked benchmarks until stuff is properly launched and officially reviewed.

For example, my main question marks lay with IMC on Zen5 CPU models and how much they are really improved from Zen4.

So, sit back, relax, let the autumn come (and let the piggybank grow :D ).

8700k is a 6core/12thread CPU like many today but 12MB of cache and 2666MT/s memory support ain’t going nowhere with todays games.
No wonder games stutter and/or frame rate goes deep.

What does a typical gamer even need a E chipset board? Even a PCIe gen3 SSD is more than fast for gaming and even RTX 4090 hardly sees any difference between current gen4's x8 vs x16 bandwith.

Best suggestion I can see, we're not too far away from launch. I will say this though, coming from a 7900x3d owner, I would keep my eye on the 7800x3d.

how did you work it out? at 5.1 it is much faster than ryzen 3600. At 1440 cpu doesnt make any difference anyway....

ps. how did you get some many stars? Did you win some "dancing with the stars" competition?

As others have said, it's probably best to wait for 9000 series launch and watch price adjustments at that time, but there have been leaks about what features are changing between x670/B650E and x870 boards, so you could look through those and see if there's anything you think you'll be missing out on.

If you don't see any features you are afraid of missing out on, you can get a B650E or x670 board now with something like a 7600x and then when the new stuff launches, you can sell that and get whatever 9000-series chip you want, but you'd have a fully working platform that removes any rush from the equation. You can wait for a couple BIOS updates for 9000-series support, for example. I thought this suggestion was already here, but couldn't find it so it must have been in another thread (I can't take credit for it).

A slight alteration/compromise to that would be that you could get a 7800X3D and have one of the best gaming CPUs available. Once 9xxxX3D launches, which is going to be a little while after the non-X3D parts launch, you can decide if you want to upgrade to one of those and sell the 7800X3D, which would still be a great chip worth a decent amount of money. Obviously you'll never get full return on it, but it'd still be worth something.

Don't know why people are mentioning the 2080ti when it equals a 3070.

A 7800x3D would be a huge bump but that implies you mainly game. A 9800x3D with a B650/x670 board would be perfectly fine unless you NEED the new features like USB4 and whatnot.

Farcry 6 is just hard to run in general. I was pushing near 60fps with a couple lowered settings at 3440x1440 with a Titan Xp. OP's gpu is fine. My current setup still struggles for higher frames.

The Coffee Lake CPU is several generations ago. I remember when i got my 7700K, going from 2700K how well the games improved. That 2080Ti is not even running as it should because of that old Coffee Lake processor. If you upgrade just the CPU, RAM, and Motherboard you'll notice a huge difference with that 2080Ti. I remember this with my ATI video card when i had my 2700K Intel processor, and how it improved with the 7700K. I would check out Micro Center for the AMD bundle's. They have the top of the line deals to be honest.

The main know advantages of waiting for x870 would be USB4 and built in WiFi 7 on some of the more expensive skus. Other than that, new boards shouldn’t be too different. The biggest unknown that im looking forward to is potentially improved memory overclocking.

Most of what i look for is future proof Graphic PCIe 5.0, which i have already on this motherboard, and m.2. Gen5. Don't use anything more than USB3, and have a CAT5 connection to the internet, so no need for WIFI 6E or 7. Those are the two main things i look for in motherboards Graphic/M.2 drives at Gen5.

Memory overclocking would be nice, but all you need is either 6000Mhz for 7000 series or what is it 6400Mhz for 9000 series AMD. Unless you are talking about tightening up the timings to Cas20's. Also memory is really cheap right now too.
