I'm sitting on a 3080 and the situation keeps degrading, literally, beyond any feasible constructive purchase. As a last gasp before supplies dry up is there some consensus 5700X3D and whatever B550 board I can get hands on is at all a rational mid-term purchase? Investment in substantially better cooling to double ambient operating temps?

The killer here is a Z370 board goes for more than it retailed and my H370 mobo refuses to accept 3xxx GPU. Getting tired of making tired threads on tired legacy hardware.

Sorry to hear of your predicament, weren’t there beta BIOSes for Asus 3xx boards that supported reBAR? Or is it another compatibility issue? I wasn’t aware of any issues with my last Asus Prime Z390-A and my RTX 3060 Ti, so wonder what the root cause is?

Seems a like a solid choice. I would point you toward AsRock for a motherboard and Thermaright for a cooler.

I have a 5800X & 3080 and feels like a pretty balanced build, I play at 4K so I didn't go for X3D as it cost 50% more than this non-3D.

What situation is degrading?

In any case it's all about your budget. The cheapest B450 motherboard (much cheaper than the B550 boards) you can find and a Ryzen 5600 is about €200 new where I live. For 4K CPU matters far less than GPU, something like a 5700X3D wouldn't make sense unless you also have a high end GPU. But if you have the money for a 5700x3d sure yeah go for it. I do believe Dwarf Fortress does really well on those...

Apologies for the late reply.

H370 CSM mobo had a BIOS update "to help use 3xxx" that didn't. For basic internetting this build with a 1060 is unlikely to require anything beyond a place to live. Never intended to game very much on this before updating.

Loosely considering a 5700X3D as price to 5800X is neglible. Cache for a gaming only build has much larger delta. Since it sounds like one of these two would be a good pairing with a 3080 I'll see if I can find something better than mobo available locally.

What situation is degrading?

Suffice to say I would've gotten past the $$$$ and upgraded years ago if other concerns didn't intrude. Heat output will have to suffice as a major reason for the title during a worldwide heat wave.

Honestly for 4K60hz with a 3080 and lack of cash I would just get a 5600. MUCH cheaper than the X3Ds and the performance will not be very different because you'll be limited by the 3080 anyway. I have a 6950XT and a 5600 and in heavy games the GPU is the limiting factor. Some titles (like Dwarf Fortress) will perform better on the X3D's but is it worth the extra cash for just those games?

As for cooling, the 5600 are pretty easy to cool. I got a used Be Quiet Pure Rock 2 for €20 and it's fine.

I would at least look at a 7600 combo with a Cheap B650 board and whatever ram you can afford.

For me locally it performs about the same as a 5800X3D maybe 2-3% slower depending on game. It's also generally slightly faster in apps even with 2 less cores.

Cost inside the US located near a very good PC retailer is a less a concern than many other places. Willingness to buy, or buy at a given price, is another issue. I won't go into a course in economics, but lower quality for exceedingly higher prices does not inspire. A mobo with features you will never come close to using just to address the platform concerns is wasteful.

Can you explain the reasoning for avoiding X3D. For relevance we are talking about nearly 1:1 what I paid at retail for an i5-8400 on the X3D.

I'm pretty happy with my 5700X3D paired with a 7800XT (likely comparable to your 3080, though you'll have better RT). They're installed on a B450 MSI Gaming Pro Carbon AC and I've got no issues with gaming performance on my ultrawide monitor. If gaming is what you'll do on that machine, certainly worth consideration.

Not the best measure, but I've included some frames that are reported in Adrenaline for a rough idea of performance.

Lows and stuff is better on the X3Ds for sure, but for 4K60hz and a RTX3080 I don't think it'll matter much.

Which is why B450 is better than B550. I can get a B450 motherboard for like €70 over here, the cheapest B550 motherboard is close to £100.
