Monitor - Change from VA to IPS ? go from 2k to 4k with 4070 ti super?

Hi all ,

I was just seeking for advice on what to do next on my monitor purchase.

Currently I use since 2018 a Msi Optix magcqr 32 1440p 144hz , is a VA panel without any of the newest features like HDR,etc (https://www.msi.com/Monitor/Optix-MAG321CQR/Specification). Now that I'm upgrading my gpu to a rtx 4070 ti super and one of my favorites games is about to be released (Stalker 2) I was thinking to take the opportunity and upgrade my monitor as well since I hear that IPS panels are way better for single player games like I usually play (The witcher 3, god of war , re4,etc).

Now this is where I have my doubts. There is a lot of difference in terms of image quality ,2k speaking, between my current monitor and a similar one with IPS panel and features like HDR, etc for single player games?

Talking about 4k , I read and see many videos where the 4070 ti super should be more than enough to run at max settings with DLSS enabled at 50-60 fps but makes me wonder which option is the best in terms of image quality , if staying at 2k with more fps or go up to 4k at probably 50-60fps.

I know this is a discussed topic already but coming from a VA panel and having a gpu which is not the ideal for 4k gives me a lot of thoughts.

My Pc specs :

Cpu: Ryzen 7 7800x3d

Mobo: Asus rog b650e-f

Ram: Kingston beast 6000mhz cl36 32gb

Gpu: Gigabyte eagle 4070

Thank you very much for any advice given ,

Regards

As panel goes sure ips is better but the bigger picture here since the games you mention are triple A titles, the 4070 ti super will struggle in the near future...
look at black myth wukong... 44fps at 4k... you'd better wait for 50 series and make your panel buying decision then

if you dont mind dropping quality setting then 4070ti super is okay but i'd get a more powerful gpu for 4k
also what are the rest of pc specs maybe some other members can shed some light

Hi , thank you for your reply! I have added the specs to the post. I do not think waiting for 50 series is an option because prices will be lot higher , Im getting the 4070 super ti for just 110 usd more adding my 4070 . Also staying at 2k is an option as well

I hate to say this but I heard this same story for decades. "Wait for the next card so you can play at 4K" (at that time it was from 1024x768 to 1080p). Problem is, by time the 5k series comes out, there will be titles that will be single or lower double digit fps for 4K on the top of the line card.

It's one of those things you will be waiting and chasing for forever.

Just do your research VA vs IPS it kinda just depends and how high end the VA is.

Both have their Pros/Cons

I personally hate the black levels of ips monitors but that probably becuase I am pretty use to oled at this point. Some of the fald ips monitors can be ok but they need way more zones than a VA based panel to give good HDR

If a panel doesn't have a ton of zones it isn't really hdr and I wouldn't bother buying one it's just fake hdr otherwise that destroys image quality.

As far as 4k goes if you're ok using Performance mode in DLSS it performs similarly to 1440p DLSS quality but looks similar to slightly better depending on game.

So to me it's just a trade off but 4k looks much better than 1440p to my eyes but just expect to have to upgrade gpus more frequently.

For me 1440p UW is a decent enough middle ground not as boring as standard 1440p and not as taxing as 4k.

I didn't consider 1440p for even a picosecond, went straight from 1080p VA to 4K IPS.
