Hey guys, I heard I should OC my memory to get more performance out of my PC, and is supposed to gain more performance than OC'ing my CPU. However, I have a lot of questions.
1. Whats the matter with Samsung and Hynix? Whats different with them when it comes to overclocking?

2. My motherboard says it only supports 3200, can I get past 3200 or not? (Motherboard: https://www.gigabyte.com/au/Motherboard/GA-AX370-Gaming-5-rev-10#kf)
3. If it is possible to get more performance, how should I do it? Timings? Speed?
4. What would be the best program to test stability?

You have 1 16gb stick? Getting 2 will help a lot since you can run dual channel then.

Hynix can be many things, but if you are lucky it is Hynix CJR or DJR which overclocks well.

Do you know where to input timings in bios?

I have 2, don't worry.
I know where to type values in my bios though.
What should I test 1st?

Try setting ramspeed to 3600 and fclk to 1800. Newest bios is also recpmmended.
Set:
Cl 16
Rcd 20
Rp 20
Ras 36
Rc 56
Rrds 4
Rrdl 6
Faw 16
Wr 16
Rtp 8
Rfc 560 (if this is DJR 400-450 will work)
Cwl 16
Rdwr 10
Wrrd 4

Set ram voltage to 1.35v
Set soc voltahe to 1.1v
Set vddg iod and ccd to 1.0v
Set vddp to 0.9v

If this works you can try 3800 speed and 1900 fclk, but you must raise rcd and rp to 21, ras to 39 and rc to 60. Keep rest of timings equal. If 3800 does not boot try 3733 and 1866.

Thanks for the suggested settings, you sure it'll work despite my motherboard having its limit set to 3200?
I need to save my fan curves before I test it so just hang on

Well, my motherboard has way different values/names, which ones do I type in?

It's fine to clock higher than the recommended speed. My Hynix CJR 3200 runs at 4000 but high CL20 at 1.38V

Try the primary timing first (the top 5), use what Taraquiin suggested, but once at a time. tRCDRD is RCD on what he said. Use something like TestMEM5 TM5 (you can Google)

Keep the ones I did not mention at auto. If you have CJR or DJR it will work at 3600 and 3800.

Use testmem5 with usmus1 config to test stability.

I've ran my 32GB HyperX 3200 kit at 3466MHz 1.38V since I got the sticks few years ago. With both R5 3600 and R7 5800X.

Is that a better config than the extreme or whatever I've used?

Someone has interprented the errorcodes so you get an indication if what is wrong. It us not 100% accurate though.

Alright, for me though any error is an indication that something's wrong. Sucks though that this 3466MHz is the absolute maximum for these, even with 1.45V I can't get the next step (3500MHz) to work stable.

Check thaiphoon burner, see what die they are. Maybe Hynix AFR? Do you use slot 2 and 4?

Every software reports them being Kingston chips so they've truly rebranded them. And of course slots 2 & 4 as it's recommended for Ryzen.

4. What would be the best program to test stability?
Have the latest BIOS (from board vendor) and chipset drivers from AMD driver website.

This is a little "old school" memory tweak process for AM4

First get ZenTimings and see what you have now

1725087208403.png

Get Thaiphoon Burner and "Read" your sticks to find exactly what they are.

Example below
1. Manufacturer: Samsung
2. Type: B-Die
3. Ranks per stick: 2 Ranked

Untitled_169.png

Click the "Report" and go to the last row in that page and click it once so it says:
"Show delays in nanoseconds"

Untitled_170.png

To the left of Read button click export and "Full HTML report"
Save the file somewhere

Open "Ryzen DRAM calculator" v1.7.3
It will show like this

1725086049929.png

At the bottom there is a button "Import XMP" so you can insert the file saved from Thaiphoon

Once inserted the info in yellow (below) will be filled.
Make sure the info in red is correct

Untitled_171.png

There is no option for Zen3 in the Processor so choose Zen2.
Leave DRAM PCB revision on Manual and BCLK at 100.
"Memory Type", "Memory Rank", "DIMM Modules" and "Motherboard" should match what you have.
Choose the "Frequency (MT/s)" you want to try to run your memory.
I suggest to not get greedy, so start conservative. Dont go from 3200 to 3600 at once.

After everything is correct click the green "Calculate SAFE" button.
Keep in mind that whatever you see on the timings and settings on the right is just suggestions.
Its not exact science. Its just to give you an idea where you can start exploring settings.

Once you choose what settings to follow dial them in BIOS and if you boot successfully into Windows open Ryzen DRAM calculator again.
The blue button at bottom (Compare) will display your current timing settings next to suggested.

Before you run any test for DRAM stability and error detection run first the in-build MEMbench
The test is quick (1-3min) and you want to be error free right there in the middle section. If you get even 1 error, dont bother run any other.

How to run it:
Click MEMbench tab and then the purple (Run) button at bottom. Nothing else.
Leave Settings on the left to be as the calculator will choose.
Once you click Run, it may take a while to start.
Just wait and click only the prompted message you'll get about not touching anything.
Wait to finish...

1725088421206.png

Thats it for now...
Questions?

3600 is max recommended with least timings you can; probably on such OLD MB you won't possibly get the "best" results.

3600 is max recommended with least timings you can; probably on such OLD MB you won't possibly get the "best" results.
yea i know :<
buying a b550 is pointless considering how old am4 is now and all I get is pcie 4.0 on my GPU and that's it
got my money's worth though buying an am4 motherboard

@Zach_01
i would not recommend ryzen dram calc.
besides that he used made up info on some of the numbers, having done multiple kits from 3600C14-4000C19 on couple of boards using 3800 up to 5950, it always went with too much of any voltages, not enough on timings/clocks (depending on die), and sometimes values shown are soo far off, even a ram-tweaking dummy (3y ago), could see its not correct.

ignoring for a moment the stuff is 4y old and has no data base for newer ryzen chips, so yeah, not a good idea to then rely on those values given, i would bet most ppl randomly picking numbers (within min-max range) might work as good.
