Hello

I just took some time to notice and at first i thought it was psu coil whine but checking carefully i´ve noticed that my hdd is making a constant buzzing noise

I´ve checked crystal disk info and hdd sentinel and they both say the HDD is ok

Could it be some mounting issue for it to cause this constant buzzing ? it is not that loud ( have to be very close on it to hear )

But i´m not sure if i could hear this before

Is it possible for hdds to coil whine ? but i´m sure it is like a buzzing sound and i´m sure it is coming from the HDD

Thanks

When they say its ok do you mean you checked the raw values or just looked at their main status?

Please post a screenshot of crystal disk info for the drive.

Check to see if Hitachi DFT will run on it, otherwise isolate it out of the case and run it.

Generally speaking weird noises are not a good sign, so backup if the data has any value to you, I am about to go bed so may miss the crystal disk info screenshot, but someone else will probably look at it anyway when you post it.

They are all DECENTLY SILENT when new, unless it's SAS server 10K+ RPM HDD.
Aging, they start to be more loud.
Yes, some "WD Green" type HDD is a little more quieter, but, even this will crackle when it has worked for like ~6-7K hours.

"Decently silent" varies a bit. The Toshiba P300s is definitely not something you would want if you have like a modern cheap case (meaning very thin steel) on the desk next to you.

So an old WD blue. Might be on its way out if the noise is new.

The SMART data is ok but I agree any new noise is not a good sign.

we can´t trust the smart status 100% right ? it is working well but i´m sure this buzzing noise appeared recently

also is it bad to keep using ? i don´t really mind doing backup as i really don´t have nothing in my pc ( i only game )

Can it damage other parts if i keep it using like this ?

Thanks

For one, SMART data isn't necessarily written straight away. For two, if there's a mechanical failure within your hard drive that doesn't (yet) affect its operation, then it might not be detected by its firmware.

So yeah, back it up asap.

forgot to mention that i had a power outage last week that "killed" my ssd

the energy went off and my pc rebooted ( as usual ) but my ssd wasn´t being recognized

I had to pull the pc out of the wall and leave it out for like 5 minutes to drain energy

then it started working again

for the hdd nothing happened but i´m wondering if this power outage / surge could be the cause

i ran my pc on a surge protector as well ( not directly on the wall )

thanks

Then I would say so. Just don't be surprised when one day it stops working altogether. ;)

You said you had a power surge. That could have been the culprit, especially if your power supply doesn't have OCP and OVP (which would be weird, but still).

Also, hard drives tend to die due to mechanical failures without any sign, often regardless of age. SSDs are much more predictable. I guess you're lucky that yours at least became noisy before anything happened.

as for ssd , is it safe to trust the SMART status ?

my psu is xpg adata pylon 650w

it has all sort of protections

are ssds more durable / can trust 100% smart status ? i think i will ditch my HDD completely and get another ssd in place
