In a vacuum, the Dual Shock (1 through 3), easily.
To be more specific, my favorite controller that I ever owned would be the Dual Shock controller from what I believe may have been the
PS One. I never had the PS One console (not to be mixed up with the original PlayStation), but I think the controller
may have been that one. It was the same White color of the PS One (though perhaps originals came in that color?) and had the same rounded connector where it plugged in, and I distinctly it remember the plastic feeling "softer" (?) for lack of better terms than the original PlayStation controller did. Don't laugh; I loved it for that.
I think it got it separately from a game store around 2000 or 2001. I was just looking for an official PlayStation controller with analog sticks because the two I had comprised of the original PlayStation controller without analog sticks, and one of the infamous clear Blue Mad Catz controllers. I don't even remember what happened to it, but I'm depressed that I ever gave it up. I've been chasing that peak since.
In reality, those don't work as well on a modern PC environment, which is what I play on now. Therefore, I settle for what I believe is the next closest thing, the
Logitech F310. It's readily available, it's cheap, and it has both XInput and DirectInput making it very compatible with games and software of today (Xinput) but also of years gone by (DirectInput). It's basically been plug and play in everything I've tried it in, and has the layout I prefer almost exactly. It has no vibration feature, but I can live without that (the F510 did have that feature, but it was oddly discontinued, and the F710 also has it but is wireless and has had issues with its dongle/receiver over the years with Windows 10). I wish they made an F310 or F510 with the color scheme of the F710 though because the color scheme is a bit boring. Not bad... just not as nice as it could be. I'd even pay more for it to be nicer. But the only major gripe I have with it is that I'm not a fan of the DPad. I preferred the one of the older Dual Shock controllers. Thankfully, I just use the analog stick over the DPad 99% of the time.
I wish 8bitdo made a faithful PlayStation (preferably older) controller clone. Their closest thing is just the same as their
SNES clone with longer handles and that's not even close to the same thing, at all. I'm sure it's a good controller for what it is, but an older PlayStation controller clone, it is not.
