Steam Survey August 2024 Update: Windows 11 Crosses 50% Share, Blows Past Windows 10

Yeah, that's easily explainable by the fact the Chinese market is growing constantly, which it is.

I don't need to follow steam survey in particular to understand basics like that. Believe it or not, Chinese count too.
We are talking about spikes here. Next month or the one after the numbers will go back down. That’s not growth. Something else is happening here.

Microsoft is about to patch the bypass out of existence. Might need to switch my old PC over to 11 before they drop the TPM hammer.
Only one TPM bypass method. The "setup.exe /product server" is patched out and that too in the latest canary build. Meaning this wont affect stable releases until sometime next year when 25H2 releases.
For example the registry keys BypassTPMCheck and BypassSecureBoot that Rufus uses still work, as does command line OOBE/BYPASSNRO for local account creation.

1 for all the TPM and online account and other bullshit, rufos can get rid of it while creating your flash drive installation media

2 win11 ltsc iot is fine

Have been running my 2-3 year old 5800X system on Win10 ltsc, but the recent Ryzen improvements, alongside an ltsc build, made me upgrade

the UI is still inferior to Win10, and I noticed higher CPU usage (fans), but performance has been good

Ok good to know. I'll build my own debloated ISO and update my oldest PC that has no TPM 2.0 chip.

Whatever conspiracy you have in mind, I'd say @Shihab just debunked any tie in with China.

Furthermore, they have stated those will remain for Pro and higher SKUs. In other words they are staying.

The only reason its because Microsoft is ending support next year to push costumers to upgrade to windows 11 and AMD is asking customers with Zen 3 to 5 to use windows 11 24H2 to get better performance ... BUT As for me no thanks Microsoft i will stick with windows 10 until i see what windows 12 has to offer.

The reason I upgraded to Win11 is to have the full potential of the 540Hz mnt...

In UK, win11 was forced by automatic download (even if it was off). Now is sitting in position "restart required" until October 2025 when I have to switch for win 11. No more update for me until then. Thx UK xD

I'm UK - I don't have that issue. I get the ocassional upgrade nag from MS, but I say 'no'. No problem.

My Microsoft account gave me a free upgrade from windows 10 to 11, so there's that. Honestly I'd rather have Microsoft "spy" on me than google. I don't even notice having a ms account. Mind boggling how people complain about something like this.

You shouldn't want either of them to spy on you, they're both equally bad IMO although I consider FB/Tiktok worse.

This isn't news. It's 中國新聞 at best.

Are people still terrified of commandline? Just image the partition with ImageX? GImageX exists.

Can also do the work with WinNTSetup3 like I prefer from WinPE.
Did something stupid happen? This should still work just fine.

This was the only thing I could think of that could drive even a small push like this. Most of those machines are likely AMD.

I'm sure you noticed the time it took to set up yet another account and a worthless account that you will probably never use as well. I appreciate that you don't mind doing this but many people do. I also appreciate that Google and most major services do spy on everyone or at least track people's internet use but they are not your OS doing it. Your OS is at the heart of everything you do on your PC. Everything you do, banking, shopping, purchases, emails, personal and business files and records etc. All of this your OS can see. I'm not accusing MS of snooping on everything and creating a database of the over 400 millions Win 11 users for their own purposes but the potential is there so imo it's unwise to be casual about the things MS is forcing on us with Win 11.

No time at all, same as creating a local account, I'm not criticizing people for not wanting to use a ms account. Collecting data (telemetry) still happens, regardless of what account you use, no amount of anti spy, anti telemetry guides and articles will change that. Maybe... Just maybe most people complaining about this are those pirating illegal software, games etc. not wanting Microsoft to see that. There is no safe way of doing online banking/shopping, common sense sure goes a long way.

Why would you rather anyone spy on you?

Nothing to hide arguments belong to the 20th century.
All people demanding privacy are law abiding citizen, unless you can prove otherwise.

Well, you did say that it's mind boggling how people would complain about setting up an email account that they have no use for. That qualifies as criticism.

Mind boggling has absolutely no relation to criticism at all.

Why would you rather anyone spy on you?
Of course not, but it's unavoidable unfortunately.

Well if they would come out with a Pure Version Windows 11 LTSC then maybe those numbers would go up big time. I know theres an IOT LTSC but its not the same thing.

I'd like it if steam gave you a toggle option for hours of game time [total hours] - [actual play time] and [afk time] maybe set it to 20 sec of inactivity before start counting afk time. I'm curious as to my afk hours, I would guess it's about 75% lol

I have a feeling that this would spawn a "steam keylogger" conspiracy theory.

Until the update comes out for Windows 10! (Please bring it out for 10!)

Apart from Steam W11 is getting owned by 10 everywhere else (globally)

I agree and that's what I do too. But I make a separate MS account for every PC, and a separate Google account for every Android device. Of course also separate from my Hotmail account, which I've held for ~27 years, and my Gmail account. I continue to not know what "sharing" and "syncing" means

Well I apply a sane amount of anti-telemetry hacks because "anonymous, but tied to your IP address" is not anonymous. I understand telemetry as a part of mass surveillance, as opposed to spying, which isn't aimed at everyone, it just covers valuable targets.

For me, this hardware survey pops up a few days after installing Steam on fresh operating system. That could just be coincidence, but considering I've only seen it once over the 10 years or so while I was on Windows 7, it seems intentional.
