I got this nice QNAP NAS today, just wondered if i can connect my internet from router via LAN to the NAS, then a lead from the NAS to the single LAN port on my PC to get internet access?

I doubt it but try it and see. There's nothing in the Ethernet cable that will damage your PC.

You might be able to. I don’t know the version of qts but you might be able to log in and bond the NICs into a single vswitch.

Qts? edit i think it is 5.2.0

The lan is a QNAP TVS-471

I have it setup, and have access to the drives in it. The speed is about 112MB/s read/write. I beleive my board has a 2.5Gbe lan port, any way to make it faster? I guess the speed is limited by the router it is going through.

Thanks

Nope can only push as much as the pipes allow. If something on the network is slower that’s as fast as you can go. Obvious exceptions being wan vs lan

There is a 2.5Gbe lan card for the nas, Dual-port 2.5GbE 4-speed Network card; PCIe Gen2 x 2, would that make any difference, or still limited by the router?

How would you connect this for the best speed with single 2.5Gbe port on PC? would it be worth sticking the 2.5Gbe card in the nas? standard it has 4x Gigabit Ethernet Port.

can i bond the NICs into a single vswitch with qts 5.2.0?

Thx

It should be possible to use the NAS as a switch these days.
The online demo doesn't have a second network interface, so I can't see if it actually works the way it should work.

As such, yes, the 2.5 Gbps card would allow you to connect your PC at 2.5 Gbps to the NAS, which will then act as another switch and you can hook one of the Gigabit ports to your router for internet traffic, which will be passed through the NAS to your PC, just like how any old switch works.

Alternatively, you get a 10 Gbps SPF+ card for your PC and a suitable length of SFP+ cable.

I have put the 2.5 card in the nas, so have one in the PC and one in the nas now. Just need to figure out how to set it up so i get 2.5 transfer to/from the pc. thx

Just trying it now

So once it is setup i would connect the 2.5 from lan to 2.5 on pc, then a connection from my router to the nas?

2.5 Gbps from PC to NAS, 1 Gbps from NAS to router.
But you need to configure the NAS to work as a switch first and make sure you use the right interfaces.
It seems like there might be a simple network bridging option you can use, for the 2.5 Gbps interface and the rest should sort out itself.

I think i might have got it.
It is set up like this now, and i do have internet access which must be going through the nas as it is is not directly connected to my pc as it was before.

I it ok to show these ip addresses on here?

Will the transfer speed pc to nas be quicker than the 112MB/s it was before as it is direct or is the speed limited by the drives in the nas(raid 0)

Looks like that should do the trick.

You're still limited by the drives in your NAS, but you should be able to hit upwards of 200 MB/s if you don't have really slow drives.
Nothing to do with being directly connected, but rather due to the move from 1 Gbps to 2.5 Gbps Ethernet.
