Sucks that I just realized that my both Phenom II X4 955BE CPUs are the older B2 stepping.

I have a question about a system in the past we had.
It was around 1987/88 i quess

The system was a 8086/88 or similar. 8 MHz turbo to 12 MHz
The monitor showed 2 colors. Normal was Black screen with Amber letters. At the back from the monitor there was a switch, that made the screen amber, and then the letters were black

When we played games where was asked to select the videocard adapter, we had to select "CGA". When we select Hercules, the monitor was not showing anything or weird stripes all over the screen.
The monitor &videocard had a 9-pin connector.

Can anyone tell what setup it was? I would say CGA, but why didn't the monitor show more colors, since it was able to show 16 colors? Or was it maybe a CGA videocard with Hercules monitor...is that possible to connect to each other??
Sounds like MDA (monochrome display adapter).

CGA had 4 colors it could display simultaneously and pallet swap between yellow, magenta, cyan, red, et c.

EGA was 16 colors and VGA was 128 colors.

Ah okay! The Hercules is also a monochrome adapter?

i have this Hercules Card in a system that i bought a while ago.

I want to find a monitor for this videocard. Do you know where to look for? Does a CGA monitor also work and only show monochrome, or can i only connect monochrome/MDA monitors?

Hercules is a little before my time unfortunately. Take this with a grain of salt: I believe any 9-pin monitor will work with hercules or MDA.

I don't know where to buy one other that the infamous ebay. People I know in person only repair old vga crt's or old arcade cabinets. My impression is there's not much market for MDA monitors. Every thrift store or junk shop I've been too doesn't have anything passed late 90's CRT's as well.

I wish you luck on your search for a compatible monitor

Ah well. All hope isn't lost after the 850 fail I had:

- Pentium MMX 200MHz, SL2RY, ceramic package
- what I assume is at least a 1GHz or higher Duron on Morgan core
- AMD Athlon 700MHz SLOT A, Pluto Core.

IIRC I should have mainboards for the first two, and am currently trying to get one for the Pluto. Nothing locally so far and eBay prices are atrocious.
For the Duron, I traded a P4C800 and a Leadtek 7800GT, for a Gigabyte GA-7VR and a DTK PRM-0076I E1.

Another new PC to add to the collection! I visited the Vintage Computer Festival Midwest in the Chicago area and I scored big in the free pile: a Sony Vaio PCV-LX700.
1000003069.jpg

It has a Coppermine Pentium 3 at 733 MHz, 512 MB of RAM, and a 20 GB Seagate HDD. I was able to test it at the convention and it booted up to Windows Me. The PC is also very clean inside; the outside has seen better days, though. Nothing a bit of cleaning and super glue can't fix, I suppose. I plan to wipe the drive when I get the chance and restore it to factory settings since I found some restore ISOs on archive.org. Unfortunately, the Vaio lacks its original stand; I'll have to design and 3D print one. If anyone has a similar machine, I'd appreciate some pictures of the stand.

Edit: I plan to Retrobrite the top cover because I've noticed that the plastic is a slightly different color on the side versus where the I/O cover was (it was nowhere to be found when I picked it up). I'll check to see if the color is just because it's dirty before I do it, though.

I have an ES version of that P4 2.2GHz which has been delidded. The GeForce Ti4400 (I had a PNY) was probably one of my favorite video cards of all time. :)

Its should be written on the core itself
I can confirm that, Athlons until Tbred and Durons until Applebred had the text on the die (just checked a Palomino from my stash).

I believe so since it has FAT32. Some older BIOSes don't like HDDs larger than that, though, so your mileage may vary. Some drives have a "Limit capacity to 32 GB" jumper if you need it.

The Phoenix BIOS had trouble with them larger then 32GB.

I remember i had Award, with 40GB, no troubles at all.

For parts?
Won't boot without an PCI card attached :D

Suspecting caps very likely, this sounds like power delivery issue caused by them.

I booted up my Vaio last night and found out a few things:
  • The Windows Me installation appears to be original as it has all the preloaded software (wallpapers, apps, drivers, etc.).
  • The PC appeared to be used up until 2009 going by some of the file dates
  • The CMOS battery is dead but it takes CR2032s (fixable)
  • The case doesn't fit well because the metal part is bent (fixable), preventing the optical drive from opening
  • The PC Card slot works, but the eject button is broken (probably fixable)
  • The CPU probably needs to be repasted as it's 20+ years old
I will be archiving the hard drive's contents as there isn't anything personally identifiable on it, but I also plan to do a fresh install of Windows Me (I found restore disc images on archive.org). I also ordered some 40 volume clear developer for retrobriting the case (sans metal) and optical drive door; any tips and tricks would be appreciated as I haven't Retrobrited anything before. I will be using the submersion method, by the way.
