going through this exact issue. I have klipsch sattelites on my desk and they need bigger drivers for sure. saw many selling cheap active speakers. for like $70. theyre big through. 60cm height . I dont care though. big but I want full sound. I want a desktop speaker that has at least a 6.5" driver for midrange and midbass. the compromise is size but im fine with that.

the problem is the small midrange driver on the klipsch are like 3". thats not enough for a full sound. I also just received a 12" active sub. the par between the klipsch 3" to the 12" shows. its missing midrange and midbass.

my desk is around your size. my case sits to the left. that will move on the sub box that sits adjacent to the left of the desk. then pull my desk a bit from the wall to fit the speaker a bit back. but I was with small speakers as you have. if you dont have a 6.5" driver, gets something with that. preferebly 8"

not for the rumbly boom vibrating bass but the nice deeper hum sound it fills. those speakers sound tin-ey for sure. shrill. like my klipsch.

btw you can use equalizer APO to tweak the sound but theres no replacement for displacement. those drivers cant hack it. like my klipsch. theyre ok. but not immersive. time to level up.

You should have gotten the Klipsch Pro Media set.

Totally agree! But facetiousness can be taken both ways. That is, as extreme exaggeration, or to express obvious disagreement - like, for example when saying "Yeah right!" in response to someone making an unbelievable claim.

Anyway, moving on.

I think the better point made thus far is if the speakers sound good to you, that is all that matters. After all, computer speakers typically are not intended for serious listening but rather as background music sources, or to accompany the main attraction; what is being displayed on the monitor(s).

I did get the Edifier R1280T speakers as well awhile back, and they do sound very good with the peters equalizer apo profile.

Bookshelf speakers ?, you mean of today or yesterday ?, lets just say the ones of yesterday did not need sub\s. I say this as there can be any thing like 20 inches in difference if not more.

Small 2.1 systems are generally fine at low volumes. If you want them loud, or you want deep bass, then there's no real replacement for displacement and you simply need to go with big speakers.

Cheap, small alloy drivers like that HP set has can handle frequencies down to about 400Hz very respectably for their price, and really the only shortcomings of these 2.1 speakers are how well the crossover to the woofer is done. I've heard everything from near-seamless fade from cheapo cambridge soundworks, all the way to horribly-tuned "boom and hiss with zero midrange" during the crossover from others like Logitech and Altec.

Since there's minimal or zero crossover adjustment on most of the sub-$50 offerings, you just have to decide if you like how the crossover is handled. As long as there's some overlap during the crossover you can tune it a little bit with some basic EQ but for most people buying sub-$50 speakers, they don't care enough to bother.

IMO good studio monitors are the best option but they're big - it's simply not worth moving to a 2.0 setup unless you can afford the desk space for at least 5" drivers and their stands - since you'll want to get them up to ear level.

For small 2.1 solutions stay cheap; The more you spend, the more you'll be annoyed by the limitations of a 2.1 setup's frequency response. If 2.1's sound good enough and they're dirt cheap, then you're winning. If they cost a lot of money and still only sound good enough, you'll be less happy

If budget is limited for 2.1, the Klipsch Pro Media is the bar in this category and they're pretty cheap on sale for 100 or less.

When you get serious you stop playing with plastic speakers.

Get a cheap amazon amplifier and some old speakers perhaps from wherever you have available.

I need speakers with seperate tweeters, the single speakers are not so great at either bass or treble. I suppose it depends on your desk area, needs re quality and budget. But for me the answer to the OP question is yes.
I'm using a set of these, connected to the logitech 5.1 sub/amp box. The speakers that where with it were imo rubbish. these have concentric tweeter(they are in the centre)

These are hilariously overpriced new, but I have a pair of these on my desk and I think they look and sound great, are perfectly sized for a desk, and their stands let you angle them however you like. That said, another vote for the 2.1 Klipsch ProMedias. Price is incredible for what you get.

I think your speakers are a little small so that they don't really look right, however not only is what matters what you think the really important thing is how they sound. If you like the sound, then maybe you could somehow attache them to your monitor - like maybe in a Mickey Mouse ears kind of position.

For what it's worth I also used to have a Altec Lansing 2+1 setup and it was for sure okay for the price, however I came across a set of refurbished Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 speakers and could not resist the upgrade. Sound is improved and I think they do look nice also (This picture is just one I found in a review, the cable management isn't great).

It does seem the guy wanted a boombox for his room, more than PC speakers good at playing music or providing accurate sound for gaming, or maybe it is just an excuse for not wanting to put up what the speaks cost when new ($500 or so).

You won't find a new set of B&W MM-1's anywhere, but as they are much loved people they don't just end up on the curb, which means you can find them on ebay and the like.

Nice, I have these Roxel 150w (Edit: actually 75wx2) bookshelf speakers that are pretty darn good value for the money compared to more expensive/better known brands, hooked up to the small board amp you can see at the back, then going into the headphone amp which also drives my AKG 702's and is connected to my motherboards onboard sound, this way I can have both connected and just use the volume knob for whichever I am listening to whilst muting the other, it's not the most elegant of solutions but it works and saves me from fiddling with plugging/unplugging speakers or headphones. Not too mention sounds a hell of a lot better than all of the computer speakers I have had over the last few years
