A 25-year-old woman with type 1 diabetes started producing her own insulin less than three months after receiving a transplant of reprogrammed stem cells1. She is the first person with the disease to be treated using cells that were extracted from her own body.

We live in an unbelievable timeline. This is just amazing. It only took three months for the cells to reprogram themselves to produce insulin. Please read the article, it isn't long at all. The future is bright my friends, stay positive.

The article also states it has been 1 year and she has sustained those same insulin levels the entire time, not needing shots anymore. So, I think the goal now is to wait 5 years, see if this change lasts that long, then expand trials. That's my understanding anyway.

Best case this will be a costly procedure for the rich. Can't have something like this just avaliable to people, someone undeserving (like someone poor who isn't sexy) could benefit.

I understand it is easy to be cynical, but there are some breakthroughs that even the rich will not be able to contain, and this is going to be one of them. Other countries will offer it, and since it changes someone's entire state of being, people will be willing to travel for it (like to Canada, etc).

Your argument is not without merit though, like that special soap that can prevent skin cancer, it does no harm and does a good job, but they don't want the public to have it because it will cut into margins of skin cancer medications, etc. However, type 1 diabetes is next level, if they try to do something shady there, they will get fucking destroyed by the masses. So, good luck to them I guess.

You honestly think a pharmaceutical company would sit on the single most profitable break through in the last 20 or more years (since Viagra I'm guessing)? That's not how this works. They're sinking millions into the research, you can bet your bottom dollar they will be expecting a profit ASAP. The moment the EPA gives them the thumbs up this goes into national then very quickly worldwide production or vice versa which ever is approved first.

Good point, and let's look at Ozempic as an example, once a new medicine is so popular that pharma can't keep up, the FDA made it emergency use - which allowed for generics ahead of schedule, you can get cheap Ozempic off-brand at some pharmacies now that the FDA approved, Doctor script still needed of course.

I don't know how the laws on all of it works though, but I expect same thing would happen with a Type 1 Diabetes cure. Companies would have their profits maxed out, then after 6 months to one year the FDA allows emergency use making of it. That being said, this does require the patients own stem cells, probably not too many doctors that are qualified for that (I may be wrong), so we may need to have some special training up of Doctors to handle the influx if it ever gets approved someday.

Just imagine the amount of money, the State can save on a procedure like this. Compared to giving a lifetime of subsidies for medicine like ozempic.
I think it will be well worth it, even if the cost is very high.

Another good point, you are 100% right this saves loads in long term medical costs and frees up some of the supply chain (and makes it harder to get needles by bad actors), I think if this does get FDA approved someday, it will be such big news celebrities will rally behind it, companies will have no choice but to be reasonable on this one. No CEO is going to have the balls to tell someone they can't cure their Type 1 if a cure is there, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I still think the FDA will just make it "drug shortage status" and then pharmacies and specialty companies will be able to offer it, non-profits will get involved with celebrities, etc - there will be no stopping making it affordable, not something this big.

Call me a cynic if ya wanna, but:

A) Stem cell treatments are extremely expensive for a reason, and not simply because they require specially trained doctors & facilities...

B) IF this is truly a potential "cure" for diabetes, big pharma will NEVER, EVER, let it get to market, UNLESS of course they can find a way to make BIG money from it, over & above the above costs...

just like the big 3 automakers stomped out/shit on/sabotaged the creation of electric cars back in the 70's, and we STILL find ourselves in the same petro-fueled clustercrap dictatorship that started shortly after the Model T was introduced, whereby the average new car costs almost as much as new house did a few short years ago, and gasoline prices fluctuate on a daily (sometimes hourly) basis...

Who do you think subsidizes/funds the studies for stem cell treatments/therapies (the ones that take decades & are never released to the public) ?...

hint: it aint the hospitals, doctors, the CDC, the FDA, or any of the other usual suspects...

Well, this lady is in China who was cured. I don't think Big Pharma has a say what happens there, and once it happens there it will extrapolate itself out to other nations, or some random country like Japan or Finland will take it up, and then there will be no stopping access to it. I don't think they really give a fuck about America's big pharma CEO's, thankfully.

Diabetes is easy to treat and reversible with diet in some people.

I had type 2 when I was younger and cured myself eating smart. If you have no discipline you cant win that battle with carbs.

She was one of the lab rats and it worked for once and they are just going make it available for most that's for sure.

Not sure to 100% believe it either anyways, for now at least.

indeed. But all forms can be reversed.
type 3 is Alzheimers they just realized.

Low carb/keto diets reverse all these problems but they wont tell us these things.

we eat too much sugar basically its the cause and the fuel for almost all illnesses

there is still a difference between all of that and a kid getting diagnosed with type 1 - that is just failed genetics, and this will fix that.

I see.
Not trying to be rude but you have no idea what you're talking about.

I don't know who or what source is giving you this ridiculous information but no, your completely wrong to put it kindly. Why you're trying to propagate such dangerously incompetent information is beyond me. Please stop before someone takes you seriously.

Diet regulation/modification of any kind won't miraculously reverse type1 diabetes... period. If it did, whoever your getting your information from would be one of the richest/most well known people on the planet. Despite "THEIR" best efforts. Who is THEY btw? Would this purveyor of ludicrous information need your help in spreading their message if anything you've said were true? Not to mention the people funding and conducting this current research would be wasting a great deal of their time and money. Yet here we are...reading an article about people searching for a cure to diabetes. In China, Japan, Massachusetts...people are pouring resources into finding a cure. Surely they would have heard about the carb/keto diet miracle by now.

Sugar. The root of all health issues. Er no, almost all illnesses. Sigh, of course.

Yes. But cost will come down eventually. Baby steps, but good ones.

Type 2 is quite a different animal than type 1. Type three diabetes is not a real classification. Not yet anyways.

Low carb/keto diets reverse all these problems but they wont tell us these things.
Really? Because that info is in like, every doctors office I have ever been to, in the help pamphlets. No one is blind that sugar overconsumption and type 2 diabetes have a link dude.

You can cure type 2 (mostly) and type 3 (somewhat) with low-carb, no sugar diet. Not type 1. But fasting can manage type 1 by lower the severity of the disease. Obviously, be careful.

I was watching a lot of native tribe videos recently and noticed something. No sugar diet, lots of exercise every day, they were in good health, and managed not to die from infections from multiple body piercing's.

LOL might as well be EPA. They all have the same agenda these days.

Best case this will be a costly procedure for the rich. Can't have something like this just avaliable to people, someone undeserving (like someone poor who isn't sexy) could benefit.
You hit the nail on the head there

I was waiting for someone to correct that :D

You can cure type 2 (mostly) and type 3 (somewhat) with low-carb, no sugar diet. Not type 1. But fasting can manage type 1 by lower the severity of the disease. Obviously, be careful.
Unfortunately there is no one size fits all with diabetes. Fasting alone can be very dangerous. If a diabetics A1C is low, eating a high carb/high sugar food is required. If it's too high, taking a shot of insulin and fasting is required.

There are specific guidelines to remain safe of course. The safest way to manage it successfully long-term is to monitor your A1C (blood glucose level) diligently and regularly, eat healthy-according to the plan set forth by your health professional, take your meds and try your best to live an active, healthy life style. Not many people are familiar with this complication but even if after following all of the guidelines set forth by your doctor or health professional. A type 1 diabetic can still get extremely sick or die from a complication called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
(I encourage anyone unfamiliar to read the above).
and it only takes a simple mistake.

People commonly (not saying you are one sC) mistake diabetes as this fluff disease that only affects the overweight, taking toes and occasionally a foot. That's a fallacy that has to stop. Diabetes the disease kills. It does not discriminate.

If a 9 year old, otherwise healthy and athletic little boy can get type 1 diabetes. Anyone can get it.
