hi!!
i've been looking to upgrade my graphics card in my computer for a very long while already, and recently ive found a Vega 56 going for pretty cheap, but i was concerned if my power supply could handle it.
i first tried to look its spec sheet on paper, on the techpowerup database it says its rated at 210W, which is very similiar to my HD 7950 (200W) that i used to run with my old i7-3770s, and my power supply managed to handle that just fine!

now, my pc being drastically different from that much time ago and being put in a similiar situation from time ago again, i'd like to know if my power supply could handle a card like this!

full specs:
Ryzen 5 1600
16GB DDR4 3200mt/s (XMP on)
R7 370 (current gpu that im using!)
2 HDDs and 1 SSD connected
the power supply in question is an EVGA 450BR !!

dont tell me to look for something else, please!! only if it'll work or not! i appreciate every other reply!

Vega had high voltage spikes and even tripped some good brand higher wattage PSUs I wouldn't recommend it at all

i havent really heard of voltage spikes for vega only that AMD really went ham with the voltages on them... would an undervolt not even help?

would something like a MSI MAG A650BN work?? is there no way to make it work on my EVGA unit?

alternatively... would a GTX 1070 be a much better option in terms of power

No to the 1070. Try the 450 first, if no dice get a 600

By limiting the power drastically... Maybe. But it's not a good idea. 650W Bronze should be enough.

GTX 1070 has, as far as I know, less power consumption (150W vs 210W) and less spikey behaviour. So with a R5 1600 (90W peak) that can work... You can try it out. But it isn't optimal.

just curious now, why is the 1070 a no? at least on paper, it seems like its more efficient, and its the other card that i have as an option. its just a bit too out of reach for me (the price is 10 euros more compared to the vega 56)
also, with "try the 450" do you mean should i get the vega 56 nonetheless and see if it makes my power supply trip?

Yes. If you can get a 1070 then definitely choose it over a Vega 56.

Vega is very inefficient and prone to failure and the performance is lackluster in new-ish games. Unreal Engine based games run especially bad.

Also, the 1070 still has current driver support for now.

You already have a 370, migration to another makes sense

You could. I think it is also some silicon lottery included. Limiting the power draw with the software could prove sufficient if you're lucky with the silicon.

If not...

I'd agree that the GTX1070 is the superior card.

And I do hate Nvidia. xD

I had been a partner of some entrepreneur (let's put it that way) who threw about 25 outta 30 Vegas in the rubbish because they failed. In the year 1. In 2019.

It's generally a legacy GPU that has insane power consumption and can die at any moment because this is how HBM works. Your PSU is definitely not enough for it.

1070 is also not a great idea because it's an 8 year old GPU. Too dated. 1660 Super is much more reasonable. 2060, if affordable, is even better because even faster + has DLSS.
