7800X3D "available but priced above MSRP" is how we got to these still inflated GPU prices. Now Nvidia only sells one gaming SKU under $400 USD (vanilla 4060 8GB).

You may reply "oh that's just supply and demand" but AMD controls the supply. So unless they have epic plans for 9000X3D chips including price points below $400 USD, (as of today) it looks like they killed their golden goose. Intel users won't pay more to switch sides, people often prefer the devil they know.

I just checked, the launch price of the 7800X3D was 449 USD. Scan UK currently sells it for 439 GBP. Considering that the price of hardware is usually the same in GBP as it is in USD MSRP due to import tariffs, taxes and whatnot, it's not bad. Also, I bought mine for 429 GBP in June. So yeah, the price has been hiked by a whopping 10 British pounds. Wow!

eBay listings of even open-box 7800X3D are selling around or even above MSRP in USA.

If the fact that a 22 month old CPU is INCREASING in price doesn't strike any concern in you... well, enjoy the inevitable sticker shock of the inbound 9800X3D. Unless AMD does something ballsy and tries to undercut Intel. From my perspective, it looks like AMD is killing off it's cheaper X3D options to force users to buy at a price they are inflating. Kudos to AMD for making more profit, sucks for anyone trying to buy X3D.

And alternative X3D V-Cache options drying up on AM4 is good for economical consumers? Potentially a 9600X3D could beat Intel 265K, which is be priced at £380. So by Q1 2025, the cheapest way to buy a new X3D could be 9600X3D at £350?

As consumers, theres absolutely no doubt we want cheaper solutions - thats a given! There was no suggestion made higher prices are acceptable. Personally I wouldn't touch the top-tier stuff unless reasonably priced. The problem with these tech companies is, when they finally craft a winning product in any given segment they will stage-manage and engineer pathways to profit from those who are willing to surrender their hard earned cash (or daddy's inheritance). If consumers fail to vote with their wallets (eg. Nvidia cards), then theres not much else we can do other then pick up the crumbs.

I know it's just one retailer, but at Microcenter, the 7800x3d has gone up by at least $100 in the last three months or so. This price increase coincided with A) the introduction of the 7600x3d, and B) presumably disappointing sales for Zen 5.

At one point, the 7800x3d was going for as low as $200. That was a crazy deal.

I don't think the 9800x3d will launch at more than $500, but it wouldn't shock me if it did. AMD is not shy about leaning hard on areas of advantage--between vanilla Zen 5's indifferent reception and Intel's humble projections for Arrow Lake, the 9800x3d looks to be the premiere CPU in the retail space for the foreseeable, and by quite a comfortable margin. It doesn't even have to improve much relative to its predecessor, because the predecessor won't be available.

Yep, unfortunately the YANKs get preyed on. Bigger purchasing power, bigger manufacturer marketing budget for exploitation, bigger market prioritizing for highest returns and generally bigger market size. AMD is simply adopting Nvidia's Model: short supply, price hike! I bet the 9800X3D will come in short supply too, to give the illusion of higher demand when all vendors on day 2 have the chip marked "out of stock". Perhaps $500 MSRP at launch > then out of stock > replenished at $600 (i call it in-house scalping). If Nvidia can do it, others fancy a try.

Some are suggesting AMD is focusing more on EYPC data CPUs hence less cut for the desktop market which will evidently impact supply/price. They did make it official with announcing "data first company".

Man I bought a 7800x3d a year ago here in Canada and currently it is a whopping 200 dollars more now than I paid for it. Launched here at 630 (didn't stay that high too long)I bought it for 409 (Canadian funds) so that's a massively increased amount from what it settled at. I bet the 9800x3d goes at least 50 bucks north of that here which is insane for an 8 core cpu

I don't think it's meant for 7800X3D owners in the first place. That +200 MHz max single-core boost doesn't seem like a worthy upgrade. But let's hope that its price will be right so that it'll be a nice bump for people on Zen 2/3.

Fair enough. I don't know why it's disappearing and so expensive in America, though. If I had to guess, I'd say that UK gamers usually choose a console instead of a PC due to the enormous price difference between the two, and other cost of living issues (accommodation and fuel prices are much higher here than in the USA).

Or even longer. As a rule of thumb, if you subtract the selling price of your old part from the buying price of the new part, the difference in percentage should be smaller than the performance increase you're getting. Unless your PC really can't run anything anymore, which definitely won't be the case with a 7800X3D for at least 4-5 years.

Not doing a cheap 5700X3D upgrade? It would probably last you quite some time for a lot less.

I support that idea. The only reason why I have a 7800X3D instead of a 5700X3D is because I sold my AM4 system to a friend.

That is why I had no issue getting a 7900X3D. Literally $50 for more Cores and Cache. Here in Canada even the 5800X3D is a $400 CPU. I can see distributors juicing the price of the 9800X3D to over $650 by the time it hits retail.
