Should I disable the second CCD on my 7900X?

Is disabling CCD the new disabling ecores?
 
The Zen 5 X3D's will have 2 3D dies so you won't need to disable anything on them, either. They'll behave just like the normal R9's.

Is that officially confirmed by AMD?

TPU ran a story on it last month. AMD's usually tight lipped until the actual launch event, and they're scheduled for November 7 so just gotta wait a week or so for us to know for real. But being this close to launch and no evidence against it, looks to be the case

x2 3D-CCD = potentially 192MB cache :eek: With AMD holding onto the gaming performance crown, i can already see some strategic dial-back gimp'ism on clock speeds or perhaps less cache per CCD which would still amount to something. Or, maybe increased cache and power/thermal sensitivities will naturally command some cut backs elsewhere.

Me thinks they'll just charge accordingly, that way the non-3D processor doesn't become redundant like the 7950X did. Still, if that can be had for ~800, i think it's worth it
 
I'd rather sell it and get a 7500F than cripple it myself.

Reminds me of Sandy Bridge era when people bought a 2600K and then disabled its HT. Just why (2M extra L3 wasn't worth 50% more price).
 
use process lasso.

also put high performance priority and power plan boost - depending on game makes huge difference. Best of all worlds. It remembers cores SMT settings, priority etc. Really helps windows not to suck.

It's funny how back then the i5 and i7 were about the same because cache mattered so little past 6 MB, the lack of HT hurt those way more than the cache size. Modern software truly is interesting, I wonder if they've become so ravenous for memory bandwidth because it's written targeting many more cores than back in the day.

Well if you look at the picture I posted notice the amount of cache that the CPU has and realize that everything you say about AMD is pure conjecture. You base your GPU analysis on the 5000 series cards and act like Ryzen has not been an unmitigated success. Even if you refuse to believe see how much Intel believed that they gave in and used the same vendor AMD uses to get their next CPU to the market. You make it seem like Dual CCD CPUs have some kind of disability but I can tell you with confidence that a 5900X is just as fast as a 5800X3D (not 1% lows) in most Games and since raw performance still matters 24 threads is faster than 16 threads especially when 12 of those threads can run at 5.65 GHz. I know most people are convinced that the 7800X3D is the cat's meow but there are Games out there that use more than 8 cores. City Skylines 2 comes to mind.

No, dual CCD CPUs don't have a disability, yours does due to its internal topology and it's time you stop pretending your 7900X3D is special and unaffected by the issues that made this the single most unpopular processor in the entire Ryzen lineup! Once the 9800X3D comes out, go out and buy one. You'll see the difference is night and day - you might not notice it at first on account of having a 7900 XT, it's not really a particularly fast graphics card - but it's going to be a much better chip, as is the 7800X3D. I'm not uninformed, you're in denial because you're neck deep in a sunk cost fallacy, and you're an admitted fanboy. In other words, you are guided by emotion and not by facts - and that makes you look completely unreasonable.

Other than a mild undervolt, I've done nothing to my 7900X and hasn't faltered on anything I've thrown at it.

Do you really think that the monthly updates have made the 7900XT slower since it launched? Then you don't know about AMD's fine wine. I am not the only person on TPU with a 7900X3D that I am enjoying.

Can you be more technical when talking about details than when I posted the HWinfo Summary? You have derailed the thread. Don't project that on to me. The OP already has a Dual CCD chip.

There were people in this thread enjoying their AMD hardware until the bashing started, and the same can be said for attacking other people's purchases which doesn't seem healthy at all.

7900X3D is no more disabled than an Intel CPU with E cores enabled, both the 7900X3D and 7950X3D are unpopular because there is little overlap between the consumers obsessed with getting a gazillion FPS in CSGO or something and those who also need a lot of MT performance, it's not because it sucks, 7900X3D is still faster than a regular 7900X.

I appreciate your good faith post, and I generally agree with you, but this is why off-topic squabbling is a problem, we just end up arguing in half and it ends misleading people. :(
 
I have a leftover 5900X in my HTPC that replaced a 5800X and all I use it for is gaming, so it was technically a downgrade.

Notably, in most gaming bencmarks the 5900X is faster than a 5600X, which is what the 5900X becomes if you disable half the cores, but the difference between those is pretty small and likely down to the simple fact that a 5900X running with just 6 cores still gets the default TDP (142W PPT) whilst the 5600X running at default TDP only gets an 88W PPT. I'm pretty sure if I set a 5600X and a 5900X with 6 cores disabled to the same TDP they'd be indistinguishable.

Maybe by a few percent and only in those ridiculously-rare CPU-heavy turn-based titles that aren't GPU bottlenecked.

Do I care?
Absolutely not. The 5800X went to a person who actually needed the 5800X, and the 5900X is easier to cool when the 142W PPT is spread over two CCDs instead of one, which means I can dial back the fans a little bit more and get even closer than before to this system being totally inaudible under full load.

Yeah but you are forgetting that it has 2 less cores with a V chance, you're pretending that the asymmetric topologic is the only possible explanation on why it's slower, which is just not accurate.

The whole discussion concerns gaming performance only, the asymmetric topology + the fact that it's 6+6 with unbalanced configuration (3D cycle penalties + lower clocks + inefficient resource scheduling by OS) result in a compound effect and that is what causes its diminished gaming performance, that's why disabling either CCD restores most of it. For work, the 7900X3D is certainly the superior choice. Naturally, as stated earlier in the thread, this doesn't concern and doesn't affect the normal 7900/7900X and its predecessor because the resource imbalance isn't there. It's a combination of multiple issues, the assymmetric topology is a part of it.
