What a novelty in a world where the new iPhone has a camera button (that my Sony Ericsson button phone coincidentally also had merely 20 years ago). Innovation is truly astonishing these days!

What exactly makes this controversial? Arachnophobia is a thing, a common enough thing - around 5%, couple percent here or there - and obviously people suffering from it will not have a good time playing a game with (big) spiders in it - thus, much more likely to either not buy the game or be negative about it. Notably though arachnophobia is pretty specific, so replacing spiders with say crustaceans seems to be the go-to move. Similar size and somewhat close enough profile.

The need for this has accelerated with improved graphical fidelity as well. Everything including arachnids in games gets more lifelike. This triggers reactions much more easily. Spiders and the like being usually in jump scares or just jumping to your face does not help either.

Btw, VR should be fun in this regard

I don't think anybody ever wanted spiders in a CoD game, but the devs squeezed them in anyway because of reasons. So now, out of the kindness of the developers' hearts, comes the arachnophobia button to mitigate an issue that wouldn't even exist if someone wasn't retarded enough to put spiders into CoD. And we're supposed to be happy and grateful that there's a solution to a problem that has no reason to exist in the first place?

Does this mean there should be a PSA for all phobics now everywhere if a Spider may be present?
Does the word SPIDER trigger them?
Perhaps outdoor scenery should be removed for all Agoraphobics, and any view that might appear to be from a height etc

The other thing is that if Hogwarts Legacy, a game made for all ages had real giant spiders in it (not just spidery looking aliens) without a single soul crying about it, then I don't see why we need a toggle in CoD. It's unnecessary attention seeking from the developers, a bit of hype generation, nothing more. The fact that I'm here talking about it when I don't even play CoD means that it actually worked.

You get spiders like the ones in Australia. Medikits have a 50/50 chance of containing dangerous spiders inside. The levels are littered with spider webs that slow down your movement and get stuck on your screen.

My biggest concern with this is that doing it so it really doesn't alter gameplay is tricky. So the cost to benefit question is... questionable. But what I hate even more honestly is the way this article is presented just to stoke ugly gamer rage. Like please, we have enough of that without stoking the flames.

I would of never expected this article to stoke gamer rage for this reason. I read comments for popcorn value. In this case fully expecting people to be shitting on CoD for still existing and busting their balls for suggesting they're "innovating" with settings that have existed for over a decade, officially or through mods.

For the chad gamers, as an asian I of course got my ass whooped as a kid. I personally am not against beating kids but wouldn't beat my own because I've read the research papers and know it's not necessary. Reading the comments makes me think gamers would love it if schools brought back physical punishment. To "toughen up the snowflakes". Just thought it's an amusing observation.

I don't have have arachnophobia but did mildly shit myself the first time I fought frostbit spiders in Skyrim VR.

Still seems a bit weak. I know plenty of disabled people. They are tough.

I don't mean people with anxiety disorders. I mean quadriplegics, people with cerebral palsy, people with muscular dystrophy, and schizophrenics. They are tough. In most cases, life has never been easy for them.

They still try to find their enjoyment and eek out a bit of happiness. Compared to that, I never thought being afraid of imaginary things (or even real things) held much of a case for comparison.
