So, a couple of days ago, I bought a Sony Xperia 5 III on eBay for $300. I got it because it's basically my dream phone, and the seller had also already installed LineageOS on it, which was exactly what I wanted.
The first impressions were great; it performs very well (even though it runs very hot under load), the cameras are cool, and the screen looks great. My only real complaint was that the front-facing speakers were kind of disappointing (especially compared to my old Pixel 3).
I was annoyed by the sort of pixelated effect the included screen protector caused, so I decided to replace it with a regular glass one. In the process of doing that, I discovered a medium-sized, relatively deep scratch on the screen.
After looking back at the pictures I took for my show-off post, I can just barely make out the scratch (expand the image and look above-right of the flashlight icon).
I originally thought it was a scratch on the screen protector, and even after pulling it off, I briefly thought there was another screen protector under the privacy one that was scratched. But indeed, the scratch is directly on the screen.
Naturally, I found this out after leaving positive feedback and praising the condition of the phone.
The eBay description didn't mention this at all, and it isn't visible in the listing photos. After bringing this up to the seller, he stated that he didn't notice it (which is kind of fair, as the privacy screen protector did make it harder to see) and also mentioned the bonus items included with the phone (two cases, the privacy screen protector, and a rear skin for the phone).
The problem is that the screen is kind of the most important part of a phone. I initially thought the scratch wasn't that bad, but after properly using the phone today, it does set off my OCD. It's especially visible with overhead lighting at certain angles and on white backgrounds. And again, the scratch was under the screen protector, so it had to have been there since before the original screen protector was applied.
What should I do in this situation? A new display assembly (with frame) is around $200-250. But then, on the other hand, aside from scratch, this display is in excellent condition with no burn-in or green lines of death. Should I try and push for a partial refund, or am I being an asshole for nitpicking this? I'm not returning the phone as I've already fully moved into it, plus it was sold "as-is."
