So, a couple of days ago, I bought a Sony Xperia 5 III on eBay for $300. I got it because it's basically my dream phone, and the seller had also already installed LineageOS on it, which was exactly what I wanted.

The first impressions were great; it performs very well (even though it runs very hot under load), the cameras are cool, and the screen looks great. My only real complaint was that the front-facing speakers were kind of disappointing (especially compared to my old Pixel 3).

I was annoyed by the sort of pixelated effect the included screen protector caused, so I decided to replace it with a regular glass one. In the process of doing that, I discovered a medium-sized, relatively deep scratch on the screen.

This picture is after installing the new screen protector. Yes, I had to get very specific lighting for it to show up on camera.

After looking back at the pictures I took for my show-off post, I can just barely make out the scratch (expand the image and look above-right of the flashlight icon).

Above-right of the flashlight icon, the scratch is faintly visible. This was before I removed the privacy screen protector.

I originally thought it was a scratch on the screen protector, and even after pulling it off, I briefly thought there was another screen protector under the privacy one that was scratched. But indeed, the scratch is directly on the screen.

Naturally, I found this out after leaving positive feedback and praising the condition of the phone.

The eBay description didn't mention this at all, and it isn't visible in the listing photos. After bringing this up to the seller, he stated that he didn't notice it (which is kind of fair, as the privacy screen protector did make it harder to see) and also mentioned the bonus items included with the phone (two cases, the privacy screen protector, and a rear skin for the phone).

The problem is that the screen is kind of the most important part of a phone. I initially thought the scratch wasn't that bad, but after properly using the phone today, it does set off my OCD. It's especially visible with overhead lighting at certain angles and on white backgrounds. And again, the scratch was under the screen protector, so it had to have been there since before the original screen protector was applied.

What should I do in this situation? A new display assembly (with frame) is around $200-250. But then, on the other hand, aside from scratch, this display is in excellent condition with no burn-in or green lines of death. Should I try and push for a partial refund, or am I being an asshole for nitpicking this? I'm not returning the phone as I've already fully moved into it, plus it was sold "as-is."

Message the seller. Just say what you said here. Most sellers will work with you, because if they don't eBay will just make them offer a return at their expense.

If it's your dream phone, then why did you settle for a used one from eBay? :(

You could try contacting the seller, but they'll probably deny all knowledge of the scratch.

A brand new Xperia 5-series phone is waaayy more than I'm willing to spend on a phone. I also had an excellent experience with my last eBay phone (my Pixel 3).

Plus, the 5 III and 5 II are the only 5-series phones that officially support LineageOS (one of the requirements for my dream phone), and both are discontinued.

Find a screen protector you are comfortable with.

I doubt it is worth the trouble of getting a return out of the Ebay seller; you didn't pay that much for it overall. Also, replacing the screen is probably a bad idea with the poor track record of those screens.

A screen protector will fill in the scratch, restoring it to barely noticeable. There are some nice ones that aren't too thick and don't affect the picture.

It's deep enough that I can catch my fingernail on it, so I doubt polishing would help. Plus, that would destroy any oleophobic coatings (though with a screen protector, that's probably not a huge deal.)

I was wondering, however, if any liquid glass repair things could help make it less noticeable.

A little Vaseline can help fill the scratch. I have had some success with that, but only on narrow deep scratches.

You have to refresh it periodically. It should work as a test for one of those liquid glass repairs though.

I think the main reason he bought it there because it's already had LineageOS preinstalled.
If anything I'm not sure security wise it's smart to buy a used phone running a third party OS.

Unless it's a problem, I'd call it good. They may not have even noticed it.

How is the camera software on LineageOS? I have (well had) that exact phone and the main reason I replaced it with a Pixel 8a is because it's not good as a point and shoot camera, the main problem being autofocus, and some JPG compressions stuff (banding mostly).

Of course, that's why I reinstalled the latest official build (wipe system in Fastboot, sideload new build in recovery) before I started using it (the other reason being it had GAPPs installed; I prefer microG).

You can actually use the official Sony camera apps on LineageOS. They seem to work reasonably well. I haven't gotten GCam to work yet.

Try using slightly moist toothpaste or baking soda....these helped me remove scratches on my son's Galaxy Tab & the wife's iPad...takes a while and multiple applications but it did finally work pretty well. I'd say the removal was ~95% overall :)

Probably not better then. :( GCam doesn't work on Android, fully anyway, because of firmware limitations afaik, I'm sort of assuming it's the same on LineageOS.

I did get GCam working on my LG V40 (also running LineageOS 21) but it doesn't support saving to microSD, so I don't use it.

These are the APKs I've messed with.

For the V40, I've stuck with Open Camera instead.
