I generally avoid using super glue - had a few BGA ICs literally rip out taking the solder balls with them if I ever needed to remove them, while that double sided tape is less likely to damage any chip.

It's not intended to be removed. But it's all good.

I have one here and some double sided tape (same stuff that @Robert B uses).
Do they really get that hot tho?

I have burnt my finger once lol. I too superglued an old heatsink onto it.

Super glue can be easily removed with acetone and a bit of heat. Yuu can use thermal pads salvaged from non working GPU/RAM etc if you have them lying around.

Already got it installed using the earlier mentioned tape, it seems even that is enough to cool it - tested with an similarly fixed 3D Blaster Banshee on a 20GB Quantum Fireball w/98SE and 3dmark99 as well as 2000 to stress the parts a bit. Everything was well in spec thermal wise.

Also took time to replace the 40GB Seagate U6 "rubberjacket" drive with an 74GB Raptor. Boots twice as fast right off the bat, almost on par with a SSD.

Good work restoring the laptop; it looked quite bad before you did. I gather that you repasted it and used a magic eraser to get the degraded soft-touch rubber off. I would install Linux on an old laptop like that. I also think it's interesting that the RAM was made in your home country.

Running a D820 with so little overclock is practically illegal, 4GHz is the starting point. ;)
Yay, you can match the clock speeds of modern CPUs! Just don't tell anyone about this little thing called IPC. XD

Those Raptor HDDs were the best of the best of HDDs back then I gather. I also spotted that you're using an IDE-to-SATA adapter board to use it. It'd be interesting to try running two of those things in RAID 0 with the dual IDE ports on the board.

I've had crappy luck on the silicon lottery, managed to push my D935 for only to 4.8GHz. I may return to it one day.

Well done giving that laptop a lease on life! I'd definitely upgrade the memory to the maximum allowed 4 GB. Myself, I'd put Win7 64-bit on it and use it like a regular PC.

This page will be of interest to you :)

Managed to snag another gem off the classifieds... a Gainward Dragon 3000 12MB.

I'll defo have to learn how to deal with V2s, so this is the perfect case to do so.

Well, not on this board. 4x 1GB with Smithfield don't want play nice on this P45 board.
Also, this combo has pretty hard FSB wall at ~950MTs, so 4GHz is a pipe dream.
Board just isn't optimized to handle this kind of CPU after much OC.
Not to mention, I could have ended up with a "failed" die quality sample :/

Damn, I thought that M2F is one of the best OC boards

Well, it is. Pentium D 8xx series just sucks (1-st CPUs with two cores inside, also : They will be 20 years old next year :D). "It's fine" with single core Pentium 4 with Prescott-2M core BTW :

Stupid that HT is only on the extreme SKUs.

I should try a P4 631 as well as it's a 65nm CPU, should OC better than the 90nm ones :toast:

While this is true, it's still better to have 384MB or 512MB of RAM, even if it's uncached because uncached RAM is still greatly faster than a swap file in the storage drive. Just food for thought.

@MaxiPro800 Doesn't your K6-2+ has build-in 128kB of L2 ?
Making cacheable RAM... unlimited (and MB's cache an L3) ?

Seriously, I absolutely forgot that K6-2+ and subsequent versions (3 and 3+ too) use the mobo's cache as L3.
I'll have to test that out though, I never checked it before.

Meanwhile, my Gainward Dragon 3000 (Voodoo 2 12MB) arrived...though there's a bit of problems with it seeing only 8MB out of 12. Gotta investigate what's going on in there.

Some more retro goodness, this time from "This Does Not Compute".
He had some issues, but got there.

I think his problem was two fold, no voltage tweaking and the stepping was the SL2WM instead of the SL32A.
My Fav CPU OC was the the Core2Quad Q6600. That thing was a beast!

My fave chips are the good ole' Athlons. You could take them to the moon and back regardless of the package they'd come in. (Slot A or 462)

Benching HD 4890 Crossfire on desk without a case makes me crank the headphone volume up a lot.

My Fav CPU OC was the the Core2Quad Q6600. That thing was a beast!
Athlon Thunderbird with AXIA stepping here. Legend says that they were meant to be for Athlon 1.5GHz CPUs but were never released, so they just used them with other models.

My 1GHz one hits 1.4GHz easily and haven't even found its maximum potential yet.

My 1.13 happens to be an AXIA too. I'm still trying to iron out a few of my KG7-RAID's weirdness but I hope to get it further than the stock 1.13.

EDIT: Updated BIOS, bumped the RAM with a whole run of blue GeiL DDR sticks for a total of 2GB, and upgraded to a 9700 Pro by Hercules. Gonna try to bump the frequency of the CPU a lil' but not expecting much.

Got it yesterday in the mail

Not really "Retro" but will be used for.....
MCE2HDMI adapter, with HDMI to VGA converter + CGA cable

To connect old MGA/CGA/EGA monochrome and hercules videocards to a VGA monitor or HDMI monitor/TV

You can also make the monitor look like a monochrome White, Green or Amber colored monitor
