AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D will be available to purchase from today, November 7, 2024. The 8-core/16-thread processor features 3D V-Cache technology, and is based on the "Zen 5" microarchitecture. AMD has priced the 9800X3D at $480 (MSRP). The processor was reviewed by TechPowerUp yesterday, we conclude that it is the fastest processor for a gaming PC build, posting the highest frame-rates at any resolution. It is 12% faster than Intel's flagship Core Ultra 9 285K "Arrow Lake" processor at gaming (at 1080p), although the processor falls behind in productivity workloads due to its significantly lower CPU core count than other CPUs, such as the cheaper Core i7-14700K or Core Ultra 7 265K. The 9800X3D is only around 5% faster than its predecessor, the 7800X3D, at gaming, although it is 13% faster than the 5800X3D.

You can read all about the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D in its TechPowerUp Review.

It's actually almost 50% snappier but gaming doesn't only rely on a CPU so real use scenarios (1440p High or higher) won't show much performance gains... for now. In the games of next decade and the heaviest CPU murderers of today, it'll be 40ish VS 60 FPS in 5800X3D VS 9800X3D running at stock. Also much less stutters on the latter. Still not convincing though.

Also not even close if we talk productivity but I don't know why one picks 9800X3D over 7950X non-3D for this matter.

It also highly depends on ones gaming habits it could be massively faster for one person 20+% and only 10% for another.

On average. In 1080p Ultra gaming. Most CPU intensive games show 40 to 45 % advantage of the new CPU.

Because different reviewers use settings.. I think hw unboxed use medium… some use high… I think I saw Linus use extreme to show the difference between 7800x3d at 4K no difference at all

What settings do you currently game at, and what settings would you use with a $500 CPU?

I cant believe the 9800x3d is only 13% faster than the 5800x3d.

It's actually almost 50% snappier ...

It's also 70% dashier and up to 130% prancier?

Where do you get your numbers? In games it's only about 8% faster (actually just 6%, from 218.2 FPS to 231.3 FPS) at 720p. Who games at 720p?

At 1440p the difference is in the realm of measurement error. 156.8 FPS to 161.6, 3%.

And we know what happens at 4K.

Are we not seeing that even at 1080p, games are still gpu limited? It don't matter who's gaming at 720/1080. The purpose is to show the cpu doing what it's supposed to do when it's stressed. Also the snappiness of the processor matters not just the numbers being shown.

3440x1440 100hz that’s my resolution so as high as possible… but those for esports might use lower settings

Maybe reviewers should measure that "Snapiness factor"? Oh wait, it can't be expressed in numbers...

Tsk tsk... to each their own. It's just crazy to read thread after thread of ppl telling others why they shouldn't get this and how that won't benefit them as if we're all living in the same bubble doing the same things over and over. I'm an og of this site but I'm not a fan of the direction that the discussions have taken.

TPU’s own review has the 9800X3D at 18% faster than the 5800X3D at 1080p. So I’m not sure where btarunr got the 13%.

100/84.8 = 1.179

More if you enable PBO.
