It's a 4+2 phase design with 60A stages. It's pretty much the lowest you can go to ensure a Ryzen 9 works.

why is there even the xt?
Because AMD is incapable of basic things, like naming their SKUs to avoid confusing customers.

5600 CPUs should have been 6 cores.
5700 8 cores.
5800 12 cores.
5900 16 cores.

Instead we have this nonsensical mishmash where the second digit of the SKU bears no relation to its core count, and some SKUs have no suffix while others have an "X" or an "XT". (I have no qualms with the X3D suffix as it actually means something materially and meaningfully useful and different).

Benchmark Scores I once clocked a Celeron-300A to 564MHz on an Abit BE6 and it scored over 9000.

Far from the worst board though, it'll handle a 16-core 142W PPT CPU for long-term all-core loads at reasonable (if not great) VRM temperatures. Realistically, it was probably half the price of a high-end B550 that might, maybe, allow you 10% more performance if you happen to find a rare AM4 CPU that responds well to overclocking at higher voltages closer to 200W, rather than the more sensible undervolted overclock using curve optimiser with a negative offset. The Aorus Elite will deliver 150A or so to the socket, which is plenty.


Honestly, as long as there's some airflow over the VRM heatsink it's going to be fine. I've run the exact same VRM config for 24/7 over several weeks in a hotbox and that board is fine. It's not an enthusiast overclocking board, but it's literally designed with warranty returns in mind to cope with the default TDP (and no more) cost-effectively. Trust the design and stick to the default TDP.

Yeah it works fine, he has been using it that way for a few years now, although with the 3900XT it doesn't seem to be able to hold clocks as well as I could with the Crosshair 6 Hero at the time. Still it's only a couple hundred MHz lower, so it's not that big of a deal

I do wonder where the paranoia of "hot VRM MOSFETs" comes from.

Is 88C hotter than the ~50C of a much more expensive ATX board with room for many more phases?
Of course.

Is it a problem?
No.

The VRM is within spec if its internally under about 140-150C (varies a little between manufacturers), which translates to an external temperature of about 125C. VRM temperatures of 100-120C are completely normal and accepted on power hungry GPUs like the 7900XTX and 4080/4090 - so I'm not sure why people stress so much over motherboard MOSFETs. They're the same component doing the exact same job, but typically at much lower temperatures because there's just so much space around a CPU socket and CPUs (at least AM4 ones) draw far less current than a lot of GPUs do.

If the VRMs approach 125C and start to throttle back power to the CPU, or delivery unstable enough voltages to the CPU to cause a crash - then you have a problem - but double-digit temperatures and stable operation at the expected clocks is so completely fine that most people need to re-assess why they need a 12 or 14-phase $600 motherboard for a mild overclock using an AIO.

Only that some VRM are starting to cut current at 80-90C and keep the CPU reaching max frequency. Some even past 70-75C. Maybe the board is set to use them like this.
Think of it like CPU boost. CPUs may “throttle” at 95C (CPU temp) for example but starting to cut boost like 20-25C prior to max temp.
Not always the case though.

Im just saying what is observed on reviews.

Asrock Master SLI/ac enters the chat...although I do believe now the Monoblock I was using probably kept the VRM from exploding but the heat had to go somewhere else and it did.

Keep in mind when running at stock if the CPU cooler is insufficient the chip is simply going to throttle down anyway. Setting a lower CPU temp limit (indirectly limits power) or lower PPT (directly limits power) in UEFI would all you would need to do to help control VRM temps if concerned.

I say go for it... for a 5900X/5950X
If gaming is you primary concern it will be fine and in any case you can cool VRM with extra fan if required.

its the thermalright phantom spirit 120SE. seems like it would be "ok"
Easy to control power consumption and heat "production" on any CPU.
As @A Computer Guy said the simplest way is to insert max CPU temp to your liking and let it do its thing to achieve it. And it will...!!
Some negative V/F steps on CurveOptimizer will help to keep highest frequency possible.

im waiting for black friday to see if 5900XT will come down a bit. thanks to @oxrufiioxo for mentioning it. just 100 lowered freequency scores..im good.

I am a pathetic gamer by the "gamer" name. 60fps at 1440p is bliss. I have little patience at times. can only play 5 minutes and close it.

also needed for picture editing in acdsee pro. I multi run batch processing on many pictures with nikon raw in one program and jpeg images in acdsee simultaneously

5950x has been holding steady around $350 for awhile now. If you see one for $300 I would jump on that for that price but 7950x dipped to $400 briefly on Amazon not too long ago so it's possible it would dip again this holiday season. That is a much better deal for only $50 more than average. I notice 7950x changes in price a lot so if you see it for $400 jump right on right away it since 9950x probably isn't going to dip below $580 for at least 18 months if you are looking for a deal.

5900x for $215 seems like a worthy deal.

The motherboard might be ok if you're not OC'ing that CPU. I'm assuming True Phase means good.

For comparison I have a crappy 3 phase running 3950x just fine. What keeps it alive is the not completely garbage heatsink and I run it at stock only.

I have a b450m pro4 for a year after my msi b450 gaming plus died with a 5900x and no issues so far, I recommend it.

It's comfortably twice as good as the AMD Wraith Prism that they have always shipped with any 142W Ryzen 9 SKUs that included a cooler.

And do you know what? That Wraith Prism is, itself, not a bad cooler at all and does a decent job even on it's "low" fan setting (hardware switch on the side that limits the PWM curve and caps the max RPM to around 2400RPM)

I am a pathetic gamer by the "gamer" name. 60fps at 1440p is bliss. I have little patience at times. can only play 5 minutes and close it.

also needed for picture editing in acdsee pro. I multi run batch processing on many pictures with nikon raw in one program and jpeg images in acdsee simultaneously
NewEgg now 5900XT $309 + 32GB ram free. If your lucky you could ebay the ram for $30 hopefully it's not junk.
