The Shanling M1 Plus is a highly capable and portable digital audio player (DAP) that prioritizes local playback to the point of using its own operating system with pre-installed apps only. There's still Tidal for streaming, but the goal here is to allow the user to lose themselves with music in the absence of any distractions.

the only usecase is preserve main smartphone battery charge....
otherwise, if you need to remove "distractions" - airplane mode is go-to way, lol

there are "old school" WAY CHEAPER variants for this, $200+ "major" toy, lmfao:D

looks nice, but ipods were way more beautiful.

The Fiio JM21 with Android 13 is my next buy, when the tests are good enough.

Yeah no most DAPs have a better DAC and AMP stage than a smart phone. Comparing a DAP to a smart phone for audio is like comparing a Steam Deck or Switch to a smart phone for gaming. It's not even remotely close.

The iPod itself was a shit DAP for it's era. It got slaughtered by the competition but it was sexier. Rare few iPods (nano) had some edge case uses but in general it wasn't that great.

Most people these days cannot focus on a video longer than 60 seconds. There is a lot of value for music lovers who want a device that not only sounds leagues better than their phone but also removes the distractions of having apps (even in airplane mode.) Many people recognize their own limitations when it comes to being distracted with their phone. This DAP seems to have found a very nice niche for music lovers.

I’m in the market for a Cowon iAudio HiFi and have been since covid, but they seem to be unobtainium.
A fraction of the size of a smartphone or chunkier DAP, zero distractions, my last one had super battery life, and good audio. Used gpodder for non-music listening.
I guess I’m one of the few that both likes such smaller mp3 players in the era of longer battery life smartphones plus willing to pay for better quality that the Chinese offerings.

My smartphone is an unnecessary work or otherwise unhealthy leash I’d like to be able to again set aside when exercising, for example, and doesn’t do Beethoven or Mahler justice
