To 9800x3D or not to 9800x3D

So i just went ahead and grabbed myself a 9800x3d from Microcenter
along with a Msi B650 Tomahawk ( $159.99 open box like new) plus some Teamgroup
T-create DDR5 6000 cl30 2x16gb ($84.99)
at the end total was [ $775.69 ] tax included
main purpose gaming

old rig
5800x3d
msi b550 tomahawk
gskill tridentz neo 2x16gb cl16 3600

CP2077, HZD, Bf2042 usage 98% or below

New rig

99% cp2077 , 99% ~100% in HZD , smoother in bf2042
i havent test any other game for now.

I planned to upgrade my gpu to a rtx 4080, but i didnt do it cuz i felt like i was going to leave
more performance on the table in some future games and is $1k price .
My rtx 3080 still gives me decent frames at high and ultra.
I thought that having a new cpu will be better paired with the upcoming gpus and can give me time to save money meanwhile
i get the full value of what i payed for my rtx 3080 2 years ago.

So i just want to hear opinions and advices, old kit will replace my sons pc
7700k

Should i keep the kit or keep the 5800x3d and grab the 4080?? i think the 5000 will be worse for my 5800x3d thats my concern here.

thanks

3440 x1440p is in my specs with the rest of details

I'm still using a 3080 at 3440x1440 and imo is still ok for now. I would like to jump to a 9800X3D though, but spent a lot getting my project 20yr old CBR125R ready for mot.

believe me after 3 years i managed to swap my 5600x to a 5800x3d brand new for the old cpu and $100 on top.
I love that chip, but some games it do wonders with my rtx 3080 and some just holds it at 96% -97% like i said.
I forgot to say that i read about the 25% tariff coming back too and prices are going to go up on pc parts, i was thinking on doing
the upgrade in 2 more years but that scare the hell out of me to be honest.

That money going towards a gpu upgrade will likely net you more performance the 5800x3D is still pretty great. Performance wise it's a fine enough upgrade in cpu limited scenarios it's also much faster at general purpose cpu performance but you'll need a 4090 level GPU or faster to benefit from the gaming performance. I see cpu limited scenarios in the majority of games I play at 3440x1440 with a 4090 with both a 7800X3D/7950X3D so the extra oomph on top would be nice once you get to that point.

IMHO: keep your new 9800X3D. Wait for Blackwell and RDNA 4 to release. Then make a choice.

I personally won't be upgrading from my i9-13900KS any time soon. GPU it is.

I mean if you already own it the performance difference is worth the upgrade imho pretty sure the 5080 will do the trick and likely be close to double your 3080... What will it cost is the only question lol.

I'd keep it lol.

You already did the annoying upgrade (mobo/cpu/ram) so at this point I'd stay with it.

Hindsight being you didn't need to upgrade from the 5800x3d yet.

Im one of those who buys and tests and i need to be sure my money is well spent even if it is expensive. If not worth it, i return that s$^%*& asap.
the parts are in that period ....
i wont ditch the 5800x3d even though if i keep the 9800x3d. My son will have an upgrade even though you dont need a x3d chip for minecraft :D, his 7700k and gtx 1070 is struggling with Hogwarts so i think he will appreciate it

If both you and him are getting an upgrade definitely worth it even if it's beyond what he needs in most scenarios.

If you didn't already have the latest X3D I would say stick to 5800X3D
Between the following...

1. 5800X3D_4080
2. 9800X3D_3080

...I would choose the 1st eyes closed.
Your gaming resolution suggests a GPU bottleneck before a CPU one.
But since you got the 9800X3D use it and get a GPU later. It will still give you some FPS upgrade.
Like half way going from 3080 to 4080.

I moved to a 9800X3D from a 5800X3D and still have my 3080 and I can tell you it feels like a big upgrade.

Virtually all my games play better, some MUCH better. Faster at all resolutions (obviously increasingly so as you go lower), smoother with better frame times.

I'm at 4k so using some upscaling you really notice the improvements as it's rendering first from lower resolutions, and frame generation tech provides a vastly improved experience and uplift. I really didn't expect the difference to be so big but honestly it's quite staggering in most of what I've been throwing at it.

I always wanted to keep the 5800X3D Mobo/RAM for my sons PC becuase he was stuck with something much slower and older, but man I wasn't expecting just how large this uplift would feel.

While the 5800X3D is indeed still a good, fast chip, but the 9800X3D is considerably faster and even sticking with a 3080 it will be a substantial upgrade, and of course a great basis for a GPU upgrade down the line.

thats how i feel at this moment, the smoothness in gaming is noticeable, playing Ghost of Tsushima highest settings native no upscaling/ dlss atm and frames are btw 60s to high 80s but is definitely like no stuttering, dipss or anything alike. Awesome gameplay experience
Gpu usage is 99%-100%. i made my mind and going to keep it, my 3080 is not holding me down yet and paired with this cpu i think is the best balance ive felt in a long time.
Going to try tomorrow Dragons Dogma 2 that from what i read is not so good optimized and heavy on the cpu.
Literally im preparing myself for Monster Hunter Wilds and the 1000hrs+ ahead im going to put into that game :D

...and like @oxrufiioxo said is a win-win for me and my son.
I can keep saving money for the gpu and see what Amd and Nvidia have to offer on the new series.
Myself i didnt want to pay top price for a rtx 4080 super, dont get me wrong is a wonderful card but imo is eol and still at msrp from launch.
I was looking at the Rx7900Xt running so low as $620 today and is an amazing gpu too, close to the 4080 super raw performance but neither convinced me.

BTW can i ask you how are your temps? does it goes high up to -70c+ when gaming, loading shaders and stuff and then comes down really fast for normal gameplay to 40c -50c??
You can see my temps, highest peak was when it loaded the game, actual gameplay stays really cool

Should i keep the kit or keep the 5800x3d and grab the 4080??

RTX 5080 is expected to be announced next month or at CES in January.
Regardless of what you do with the CPU, I would definitely not buy an RTX 4080 right now.
