I've been using the Windows App for iOS for a few weeks now, and I spend more time using Windows on my phone than iOS. But the biggest issue is I can't use it from outside the LAN. I know it's possible, there are gateway settings in the app and my modem, but putting in the modem's IP4 and IP6 addresses and gateway addresses didn't work, and even if it did work, I'm not sure if it would give me access because the only credentials I can enter are the ones for my PC. Any advice on how to set this up? The Google has been not helpful because the app recently changed names, and both names are very generic when searching them plus gateway configuration. I read documentation from Microsoft about maybe setting up a virtual gateway server on the PC itself, but I don't think that was relevant to my OS. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Host PC is my System Specs. OS W11 Pro
iPhone 14 iOS 18.1.1

Do you actually run an RDS server at home? Ah no windows 11.

Or are you talking about RDP? Please do NOT expose RDP to the internet, use a VPN.

RDP I think? I don't have a second PC configured as a server. I'm using the built in remote desktop service in windows and connecting with the Windows App for iOS.

No do not expose RDP to planet earth.

If you don’t feel comfy using a VPN or setting one up, then you should look into other 3rd part services like teamviewer, splash top, etc. Which are generally more secure for remote access outside of LANs.

I thought that's what the point of the app was, why else would it include gateway setup to use it outside the LAN? Anyway, thanks for letting me know if it isn't safe. I've never set up a VPN, but I'd be willing to give it a try. My wife uses one to connect to work so I have a basic understanding of their function. I tried using VNC, which worked only as long as my monitor was on. Setting up a virtual display device didn't work. I was going to try TeamViewer too, but the Windows App was super simple and has really good performance and usability. If it's too much hassle to set up a VPN I'll try TeamViewer.

RDS gateways are servers for RDS services that connect over RDP. This is for like corporate infrastructure. The RDS gateway then forwards your connection to the backend to a machine. This is ok to expose to the internet. It’s also for corporations.

Exposing RDP to the internet is bad and you should never ever do it.

If you want to go the VPN route first see if it’s something your router can do. It may be able to host a VPN server internally and will likely have a setting or tab for it in the admin control panel.

The router manual says it has VPN passthrough, which is already enabled by default. The only other related setting I can find is remote management, which looks like this, and not correct.

Everything I can find that describes setting up a VPN server on a similar router describes a VPN option under the advanced tab, which isn't on mine.

I checked your user manual and it does not provide a VPN server. The easiest thing at this point would be exploring third party remote tools.
