After a few years of decisions and procrastinating I finally did the major redo on a Win 7 system I originally built in late 2009. Now nothing remains of the original build except memories. The first case I used was replaced by a used Cosmos 1000 from the local Craigslist for $20 in 2010. The original AMD platform was replaced with an Asus P8P67 Deluxe/ i7 2600K in early 2011. An ASRock Z87 Extreme6/ 4790K replaced that a little over 10 years ago. It's been through several different GPU's, hard drives, optical drives and power supplies over the years. Here are the major changes I did over the past two weeks:

Win 7 Enterprise 64 to Win 10 Enterprise IoT LTSC (I did it without having to reinstall any programs, lots of online research and time went into that but no money was spent).

ASRock Z87 Extreme6 w/ 32GB DDR3 1866 to ASRock X99 Extreme4/3.1 w/128GB DDR4 3200 (runs at 2400+ because of the Xeon CPU locked multipliers). I have two USB C ports now.

i7 4790K 4c/ 8t to Xeon E5 2683 V4 16c/ 32t (BLCK at 103.5). I tried a 6950X but it wouldn't boot for some unknown reason. That CPU worked with the same RAM in an Asus Rampage V Edition 10. I didn't feel like dealing with the EATX Edition 10 and its complexity, the X99 Extreme4/3.1 is smaller and much easier to work with (It came from a TPU staffer a few years ago cheap).

Seasonic Focus GX-850 to Seasonic Prime GX-1300. I had spares of both in my collection. The GX-1300 has more connection options as well as wattage.

Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum to Asus Xonar D2X. I have a Fosi K5 Pro headphone amp, BGW 7500 Proline II power amp and a pair of Polk Monitor 70's to connect when I have the energy to move things around in my bedroom for the BGW and Polks.

XFX RX 6700 to EVGA RTX 1080 Ti FTW (The 6700 is going into my pending Z690 rebuild since it's Gen 4). The 1080 Ti has better picture quality on a Vizio M-series 50" 4K TV from two years ago.

I kept the Samsung 860 EVO 2TB system drive and hard drives since they were installed new a few years ago. I tried using a Samsung 970 EVO NVMe as the system drive at first but didn't see any speed difference between it and the 860 EVO. The 970 EVO is going into the Z690 rebuild as one of the storage drives.

I did the gasket replacement on the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 from the last build and used that. Runs stunningly cool even under load. I have the BLCK at 103.5, some cores were exceeding 3GHz in Turbo mode with temps of under 74 degrees F.

I still have to go to Menards and get two cheap furnace filters that I use for side panels. Very ghetto but it runs far cooler than with the regular panels plus the locking mechanism doesn't give headaches using the furnace filters.

I didn't have to buy anything since all parts used were already in my collection. I fired it up for the first time Friday night and did the final operating system fine tuning yesterday. So far I'm very pleased with the improvements and the fact all it cost me was time (and I have plenty of that at my age). There were several CPU related issues in the Device Manager that I couldn't find drivers for because of the Xeon. I ended up copying the entire driver folder from System32 on my X99/ E5 2699 V4 rig to a flash drive and used that to fix those problems.

Hi, I have found that on my X99 system the chipset drivers found at https://winraid.level1techs.com/t/intel-chipset-device-drivers-inf-files/30920 work well.

This link specifically: https://mega.nz/file/k1YEgRQR#MIpKhKZK2y5Ei1f_wQwN9tMrC3k8wBdpP9d3JHfBT7o

Also (at least for my particular Lenovo X99 motherboard - note I use all SATA devices) these AHCI drivers work the best on my system: https://mega.nz/file/olJATaqJ#MStIovyB-CzwDyv-gQv6QMMu9_uw3-HbxT15CIvs7nE Figuring out which AHCI drivers to use can be confusing. I studied two discussions and had to do some trial and error: https://winraid.level1techs.com/t/modded-intel-ahci-and-raid-drivers-digitally-signed/19691 and https://winraid.level1techs.com/t/guide-x99-sata-controllers-and-drivers/32191

Very nice X99 system you have built!!

I still have to get the furnace filters so I can post the pix in Ghetto Mods. Using that Cosmos case is extremely important for me. It's the perfect height to put a 20" box fan on the side rails. I have that whole setup next to my bed with the TV on a 3 level A/V stand with a Vesa mount ($250 at Walmart new, I paid $20 off Craigslist several years ago). The cancer drugs make me sweat all the time so the fan is a must at all times. I can do everything but the hardware work while in bed. I have two PC's connected to the TV so I can A/B back and forth when the need arises. I bounce data off USB flash drives and external hard drives, the PC's are side by side.

Once I get the audio set up I'll move one of my high-end PC's into here to connect to the sound system. I'll keep the other rig for the 24/7 use the Z87 was for.
