A recent discussion made me wonder about usage of the internet and TPU. In particular, how do you access/use TPU & the net? Do you use a phone? A Tablet? A Laptop? A PC? A smart TV or even game system? A combination of these? Something else?

This is not intended to be an invasion of privacy thing only a poll to gain insight of how TPU users generally surf.

Personally, I use a PC at home and rarely anything else unless I'm in a pinch. Why? Nice, big screens(dual screens) with a proper quality keyboard & mouse and carefully curated security settings... because screw tiny as hell touchscreens and touchscreen keyboards on devices I can't control.

That's just me though. How do you all feel?
There are no wrong answers here, everyone's own way of doing things is their personal choice, it's all good. Some of us are going to disagree, but let's all keep it civilized! :toast:

I think I mostly surf the web (TPU included) using my phone, but there are things I definitely must do using either my desktop or my laptop.

I use a desktop PC most of the time. For me a big screen with a mouse and keyboard is the most comfortable way to use the internet, whether for work or leisure. Being able to switch browser tabs freely, to have several apps open at the same time, to make notes, while having access to all my data makes it the obvious choice for me.

I only use my cellphone when I'm not at home and must check something online. But I don't like using mobile devices for the net in general. I guess they're OK for media consumption, but when any kind of input is required I always prefer a PC. Even something as trivial as typing a password on a small touch screen frustrates me.

@lexluthermiester
Perhaps changing the "PC" option in the poll to a "desktop PC" would be more accurate, since a laptop is a PC anyway.

Since having my AI implant installed directly into my cerebral cortex last year, I just think about what I want to access, and it instantly appears on whichever screen I designate, hahahaha :)

But seriously, 95% of the time, I use my desktop pc, and my phone for the other 5%.....and I absolutely refuse to connect any of my TV's directly to the net, mainly because the interface suks wallah, and I prefer to keep my viewing habits/histories to myself....

I view TPU as a decent tech site, one of few in operation with a small number of online active accounts.

The internet in general is fine.

whos askin and who cares? Probably a few select individuals at most. 23 voters so far, let's see if it breaks more than a couple hundred.

I use a web browser.

Everyone gets the general idea though.
Agreed. While true, a laptop is a personal computer, it is generally assumed that PC means a desktop going back to the original "IBM PC". This is especially true when both PC and laptop are included in the same list/document/survey. That said, "desktop" might be considered a PC in a horizontally orientated case as opposed to a "tower".

And for that matter, what is a desktop PC when it, like many, sit on the floor next to the desk? ???

If one wants to get nitpicky, a smartphone certainly counts as a PC. There's no fundamental difference between it and a typical laptop computer. Even a tablet is a personal computer. Yet most easily differentiate that too with no problem.

The thing is, with the choice of laptop offered the differentiation implies home vs mobile usage. I think the selections offered work fine for the purpose of the poll context. Besides, I can't change them anyway after voting has begun.

99% of the time, I prefer to use my desktop for pretty much everything. As lex and Bill have said, nothing beats the comfort of an actual mouse and keyboard and nice big screen when browsing the net, but I'd also like to add in the fact that I don't get bombarded with a crapton of sneaky ads on my PC compared to trying to browse with my tablet or phone. Makes me want to pull my hair out (if anyone can recommend to me an android-based ad blocker for my phone and tablet, I'd be very grateful!)

It's all about ergonomics, so almost never phone/tablet/TV(w/NUC).

Vast majority is regular PC/Mac with sometimes laptop because that's what I got.

I try to keep work and personal separate, so I don't often get on TPU on PC at work. Almost always mobile.

When at home, it depends. If I am setting out to accomplish something I will use a PC. Same for if I am using a PC for something else, such as gaming.

Otherwise, I have a habit of browsing in bed (phone) or browsing while doing something else like cooking. So I would say for TPU, 75-80% of the time it is on my phone.

Im not always at home so its more like a 30/70 split (mobile device/PC). Sometimes I go places where I dont have computer access but i'll have my phone or my tablet with me.
