I may or may not had one of these during 1998-2003. It was a lot of trouble and the wired remote constantly caused the speakers to cut out unless I jammed something like a guitar pick into the volume potentiometer. Even then it was 50/50 if the solution worked. Sometimes it did, sometimes it didnt. No amount of electrical contact cleaner made a difference.

I still have it in the shed somewhere.

Yeah, I'd love to try some Neumann or Genelacs but then I'd feel bad for spending all that money and not having proper room correction. Then I'd feel bad for not having room treatment. Then I'd feel bad for only having one sub... that's a rabbit hole for people with way more money than me!

Yep, can confirm that. But as soon as you manage to tame the beast and it's stops doing that, the sound was/is quite alright.

I took the cowards way out and upgraded to a Z5500. I remember having to ask my dad (I say 'ask' I really mean beg) to borrow his credit/debit card because despite me working 70hour weeks for 2years. My bank refused to upgrade me from an ATM card to a regular debit card I could use to buy things online.

The sub is a 200W Jamo, the original one died some eight years after buying that set lol (after years of serious abuse, it was my dubstep period :D), the Jamo sub has been going for more than ten years now.

I think this setup is already 20 years old. But man is it good... I've done house parties with this set, recorded DJ sets on it... the amp ran a couple of monitor speakers admirably too. Its not audiophile level audio, but its super solid, does everything, and is seemingly indestructible. The satellite speakers too. There's virtually no coloring in the audio, super honest, flat eq (unless you use the 'special' audio dsp modes like this logic 7 below, all of which are subpar; just 5ch stereo or 2ch stereo is fantastic).

One thing is crystal clear to me, after a few sets of 'pc speakers' and landing on this set, I'll never waste 20-30 bucks on those little active shit speakers again. Its just e waste. A receiver and couple of real passive speakers pay their expense back a hundred times over. The stuff just lasts, can be connected to anything, or can connect anything. If you buy audio sets, do it right or just dont. Similar things apply to active speakers, unless you go for the highest quality: they're much more prone to death, while a separate amp/receiver disconnects the vibrations/wear in the speaker from the electronics, which is the golden formula for durability. There are no moving parts in them, the only enemy is dust and just regular wear, which barely happens.

The moment I see BT or (any kind) of wireless connection they lost me. Let me be clear, I don't hate the usage, I just hate the result. Also my P580 were something about 40 Euros at that time (charger had a fried transistor). Kinda hard to beat at that price. :)
Yeah its really hit or miss. Most of the time there is some sort of compression over BT and it is audible.

BTW very inspiring topic. I might be looking at a new set soon :D

I have a Creative Inspire 5.1 5300 from 2000 something. Still sounds as good as ever.

I have The Sevens by Klipsch. They sound great. Had to disable dynamic bass since I have a sub. It is definitely worth buying monitors over regular computers speakers if you have the means. The upgrade in sound quality is without question noticeable.

Im not gonna buy speakers in "plastic" anymore. They sound horrible. Just a good receiver from Sony, Technics and good wooden pair of speakers.

I have a couple of vizio sound bars that I use for PC and TV sound. But my favorites for music on PC are these Sterling MX 5 Studio monitors. Believe it or not the MX 5's were found at the local recycling bin!:toast:

I'm absolutely no audio connoiseur but do love surround effects, so just using the good old Logitech Z906 5.1 (connected with Optical S/PDIF [@ Realtek® ALC1220 Codec]) like some others here.

It does the trick and if the wife gets annoying with nagging :wtf:, it's got plenty of volume (1000 W peak & 500 W RMS) to make her disappear :D in a sea of sound ;).

Please don't let her know I posted this :fear:, or I'm doomed

I'm sure I've replied to this thread already, but I'm using Cambridge Soundworks 4.1 which I bought in a bargain bin at PC World, Hereford, UK about 30 years ago.
Frankly, I can't fault them. Not only is the sound as clear as a bell, but they've also survived more than 20 different setups in three different countries.

FWIW I have surround sound in my living room and "just" stereo at my computer.

I find surround not really worth the trouble.
