The sspud Xhuttle may not be the kind of chassis you would expect from the brand that brought you all mesh ITX cases in the past. But, the Xhuttle manages to really offer plenty of uniqueness at a pretty interesting price point, without really compromising on functionality, even allowing you the choice of two different stances.

Shout out to the legend, SilverStone RV02, now 15 years in the past.

It's been so long, you'd think Gamers Nexus time traveled with that Radeon 7800!

thanks for the review

I’ve probably become too accustomed to the traditional setup of mounting the motherboard in its standard orientation + front-to-back airflow, somewhat making it hard to get on board with experimenting these alternative layouts (yep boring ole me). I’ve seen a few of these side-way orientations over the years, but they still haven’t grown on me. I suppose if this sort of thing achieved significantly better thermal or noise performance, I’d probably consider jumping on board, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

looks pretty cool though.... but:

  • Exterior plastic scuffs easily
  • Lots of plastic components

Thermaltake has a whole range of cases under CTE range and even Geometeric Design has few cases that use this layout, Silverstone has Alta F2 right now with rotated layout while Raven is dead.

Interesting. Quirky but has a nice look. Refinements would go a long way, but anyone willing to do some DIY modding would have fun with this one.

Graphic cards are heavy these days. The printed circuit board and the components do not like mechanical stress.

I'm worried about my graphic card in this mounting position. The cable will also bring more force to it.

A vertical orientation should be no worse than a traditional horizontal, and may even be more favorable based on a QnD mental check of the forces involved. With the card parallel to the floor, there's a whole bunch of mass just floating in space relying on the torsional rigidity of the card to support it. Gravity always wins, so we get the dreaded GPU sag, and of course support brackets to combat it.

When you hang the card vertically, the mass, particularly on very large cards, is much better supported. Instead of much of the cards mass acting as a self-weighted lever, the I/O plate takes on a greater proportion of the load, as it's screwed directly to the chassis and is much closer to in-line with the center of mass.

If you look at my horrid Paint illustration below, a vertical installation is on the left, with flat on the right. You can get a rough sense of the proportion of a load on an attachment point by comparing the distance from center of mass relative to other points. My doodle is very much not to scale, but I think still "accurately" suggests the shift of load from the slot to the plate when "hung" from the chassis. Now, if one has a GPU support bracket, all bets are off. But I'm still quite confident that, if nothing else, vertical is not worse than flat.

Sadly I can't claim it as my own, I just lucked out and found it online, I thought it brilliant too.

Love it. I always went for cases that looked different. This one definitely gets on my list for new PCs. Affordable price is a huge plus and probably a booster for sales.
