This is what Chat GPT said: (it depends what you plan to do I guess)

In the Steam Deck's BIOS, ALR stands for "Automatic Lock Release." It refers to a security feature that unlocks certain locked-down functionalities automatically under specific conditions, often related to hardware debugging or recovery scenarios.

For instance, enabling ALR can allow access to normally restricted areas of the firmware to assist in troubleshooting or for developers to access more advanced options. This is typical in BIOS or firmware settings where locked configurations need to be bypassed in controlled environments.

Don't thank me, thank ChatGPT. I just ask ChatGPT everything these days, it never fails me. Sometimes, I have to re-word it, but yeah.

I'd be careful with that. Now, Google search started to give AI-generated answers on top of its website links, most of which are fine, but some are just as much BS as the low-quality clickbait sites it got the info from.

I'm hopeful that Deck OLED will get a price drop on it's one year anniversary, November 16th... not too far of a wait now.

Or if not a price drop, at least some new colorways, they promised us colorways on launch, but never did any yet (this is outside of the limited edition one, they said more would come).

I also hope they are working with AMD on a new custom chip for Deck 2 by now... Winter 2025 or Spring 2026 launch with a custom SoC from AMD would be epic.

Valve has been very clear. They want a substantial upgrade in performance. I would expect 50% within the same power envelope would qualify as substantial. They might have to wait for RDNA5 to become affordable for a custom SOC.

that's a shame, well since rog ally has steamos support now, i may try the rog ally that comes out next year that will have the z2 extreme apu, assuming it also will support steamos.

And I kinda like that console approach. No need for a new hardware every one or two years.

yeah I saw that this morning when I woke up, but its the anti-glare screen, which ruins clarity imo. so I probably will be passing on it, I am going to try to watch a few more reviews, but i know the two most famous handheld reviewers on yuotube that compared glossy and matte on LCD and OLED launch both said same thing, glass Deck is just clearer to the eyes than matte. i hate that grainy look in my games.

i have a feeling the 512gb glass version of the Deck OLED will go on sale on the 27th with the Autmn sale.

i expect the white version will be sold out though after its launch later today. not that i care since it is has that 'matte like' screen

fyi, reason I say it will sell out, is because this is the first world wide launch - lot of potential new customers. I assume they will just charge more for shipping and require import fees of course

steam deck oled white is now live and for sale. im so damn tempted to get one. i just feel like 726 after tax is a lot to ask for a zen 2 apu at this point, damn i don't know what to do, we might not get another colorway is the main issue i have

Steam Deck fan FOMO is kicking :D
You plan on keeping your older steam deck or replace it with the white version ?

I actually went back and re-watched some youtubers, basically Valve made a mistake by doing etched glass, it would have been way better to use Corning glass like the RoG Ally uses. Anyways, timestamped the video for you if you are interested: but this convinced me to just stick with my glossy display. because it is the same experience i have had before with matte displays.

edit: I can't find the image right now, but there is one that shows face reflection in same lighting at same angle with rog ally, deck glossy and deck matte, and yeah the Corning glass is number 1 winner at reflection handling and color pop, number 2 spot goes to deck glossy, and 3rd place is matte deck. so no, I am not spending almost 800 bucks on a deck oled matte with zen 2 apu, i guess lord gaben will have to be content with his 6 yachts, cause i'm done until they give me proper value for money, aka corning glass and proper apu upgrade for the price paid.

timestamped for your viewing please

new video yesterday, and he still plans to play on his glossy deck OLED vs the new white LE etched glass model.

the interesting thing is if you look at pictures of rog ally, vs etched glass deck, vs glossy deck, the rog ally screen is the winner of the three, and glossy second place.

I thought of a potentially really cool idea for the Steam Deck: a headless controller mode. This would allow you to turn your deck into a wired or wireless controller that you could use with your PC.

In a round about way you could do this by streaming the game from your pc to your deck. The game will appear on both screens and you can control it on the deck.

True, but you'd probably get lag. I was thinking something like a special mode you can put the device into where you can connect a USB A to C cable to it and it turns into a Steam Controller-type thing.

I've also got this idea but I think it will require new hardware to make it work and be recognize as a controller. I'm 99% sure there's no way it could work while the Deck run SteamOS. I will be happy if they prove me wrong.

Maybe they could add it to the BIOS and have a "restart in controller mode" option.

Software Windows 10
Maybe they could add it to the BIOS and have a "restart in controller mode" option.
Yeah but could it work without new hardware ? I believe even a small chip would be necessary to make up for kind of a translation -> redirection thing to the usb port.

They might be able to emulate such a chip within the OS; this is just speculation on my behalf, though.

True, but you'd probably get lag. I was thinking something like a special mode you can put the device into where you can connect a USB A to C cable to it and it turns into a Steam Controller-type thing.
While I am certain there is lag, I haven't noticed it. I am not playing games that need fast reaction time. I sometimes play with my Steam Deck connected to the TV with the steam link. That way the steam deck acts as a controller.
