Was thinking and looking at monitors recently and Plazma shot into my mind. After taking a quick look, they don't even make them anymore! I had no idea production was completely halted. Looks like in 2013 after a quick search.

So curious if anyone still has a working Plazma TV or monitor.
Had a buddy that got one way back maybe even in the late 90's early 2000's like 01 or 02. I remember it looked pretty good, but it ran pretty warm.

Oh yeah man they run warm. I have a 2010 Panasonic 42 inch and the back is all metal, like a big heatsink. It says 298w on it, I thought it was 600.. glad I double checked that lol.

As for how it looks as a monitor? I thought it was terrible tbh. Must be a low end model I guess.. outside of that I have no experience with them. I got it for a hundred bucks back in 2017..

Edit:

Now I have glasses, so it might not be as bad as I thought :D

I saw them, their Refresh rates/response times were as smooth as a CRT, Colors were vibrant and not subdued.

But the text though, I found like this kind of text impossible to read. But I have glasses now.. colors and stuff were pretty decent.

It is literally a space heater :)

My uncle has an old LG plasma that developed some insane burn-in over the years. OLED's pretty much completely replaced that niche. Instant pixel response times in OLED do show its sample and hold nature, though... Good read:

our has died, of course it was TV not a monitor. Yeah, nice stuff back then, but, lifespan is a rofl.

I have a mint condition 65" Panasonic VT-30 and it's for sale. Very low hours of use on it, went 4K a couple of years after I bought it. 1080p and it weighs 170 lbs (The display screen is glass). At the time I bought it there was no better consumer TV on the market. I fired it up a few months ago and it still works perfectly.

I remember seeing a big plasma in a store that had 4 8cm fans along the back cover to cool it ha ha. And now I have my OLED that's about 3mm thick around the top half. Crazy. Display tech still has a way to go though, as fantastic as it looks we still have smearing on motion, and so far the only thing that helps is black frame insertion, which kinda sucks. And VRR should be a standard on all screens.

Used to have one but got rid of it due to how much electric the damn thing used lol
Was a nice screen though, I think it was a Panasonic 3d plasma 43 or 50 inch thing.

I have an old Panasonic 55" plasma at the office, still waiting to be fixed.
Did a little recap on it awhile ago(didn't touch the HV driver boards yet), and it worked for about a week with no issues, but still borked later (just static on the screen, probably the same power issue popped up).
While 720p is a bummer(though,I'm not sure, cause it might be 1080p but looked a bit wonky), the refresh rate and image smoothness really impressed me - super-soft and not heavy on the eye even when sitting 1m from the screen.
It was a present from one of my clients. I wanted to make it into a gaming TV for my friend's workshop. He's a big XB360 fan, so a decent 720p plasma is perfect for that use case. Just need to find time(and space) to rework the internals again.

Oh god I bring this one up with my dad every so often. When I was 18, I used to work in Currys (UK), I worked there before plasma came out.
It was a very short lived technology, too many caveats, such as the display had to stay upright, or instant dead (likely).

Samsung did a better job with LCD, in fact we have not really moved on from LCD.

My uncle has an old Pioneer Plasma TV (back when they still made TVs and their own panels). Still offers a great picture.

The power / heat is less of an issue, he's old so a TV that acts as a space heater is kinda like a win/win. Luckily due to the variety of stuff he watches, not suffering from any obvious / noticable burn-in issues.

Ironically a Panasonic LCD TV he had for another room that was newer also already died having had less use... that's some of that technological progress.

Likewise. Bought mine in 2006. It's up here in the computer room keeping things warm. On Standby, it still consumes 20W, so I try to remember to press the on/of switch in the set's lower left corner before leaving the room.

I have 55in Panasonic OLED downstairs (2018 vintage) and brand new 42in Panasonic OLED in the bedroom.

I'm not a fan of my latest purchase. It's an Android TV and gets unhappy if you power it off completely. It took two and a half minutes to power on after I plugged in an Ethernet cable, so I've permanently disconnected it from the internet. Probably trying to update the firmware or EPG? Reminds me of old black and white 405 line sets full of glowing valves (tubes). The sound appeared after a minute, the picture another two minutes later. It feels like power on times have gone back 70 years. Brilliant.

Useful to know. I'll try and remember when transporting, unless I'm taking it down to the dump.

So curious if anyone still has a working Plazma TV or monitor.
I used the plasma set with the VGA output on a media computer. When I bought the UHD OLED, I couldn't get 4K HDMI until I installed a low-profile GTX 1650. OK at 30fps.

Hell yeah. Bunch of you guys still!!
No shit. I remember seeing one at a thrift shop a couple years ago for like 20 bucks, but didn't get it. I wonder if I should have..... Darn.

Any one want to photograph Plazma vs LED vs LCD in high res for the thread?
Really curious because, vs comparing random pics on the interwebz is janky.
