I have a PNY 3070 XLR8, can I flash MSI 3070 Suprim X?

I'm power limited at 250w, generally seeing around 230ish. Running around 2ghz core about 0.975v.
I'm kinda wanting to flash to a bios that can allow more power, but I think (can't verify) the Suprim uses more phases. The PNY is 8phase and has 2 8pin power connectors.
Here's a link to the card-
Here's a link to the bios I'm wondering about -

Thanks for any help.

My guess is that it's a bad idea. If you want better performance get a 4070.

If op comes back I will be comparing his bios to others

I would not do it, waste of time, but if you insist... First thing: make sure that both BIOSes are for matching 3070 types. 3070 LHR BIOS will not work on 3070 and vice versa. Flash it with nvflash -6 GA104.rom, whereas GA104.rom would be the file name for the BIOS to be flashed. Backup original with GPU-Z beforehand. You should have a backup GPU or integrated graphics to revert it if things go south and you do not get an image.

It is noteworthy that it is exceptionally unlikely that you will get better performance or even the 300 watts out of this BIOS. If the Suprim's shunt configuration mismatches that of your PNY 3070 (and the chances of that are extremely high if they have different VRM designs), expect whack readouts and even lower than expected performance. This happened with my RTX 3090 TUF on virtually every VBIOS I tried flashing on it.

Here is the ROM backup from GPUz.

Here is the ROM in the GPUz database:

I do have integrated graphics if things go south in order to reflash the stock BIOS. I guess my main thing to worry about is will I actually damage the GPU that it wont work anymore?

As a test flash to this bios that came out in 2021, your original is from 2020.

Probably not, the VRM on this card should handle 300 W. The problem is since the shunt values may mismatch, it could occur that the card reports to the driver that it´s drawing like, 900 watts or something as a bogus readout, and that will cause your card to throttle very hard. Could also occur that it will report that all power is being drawn through one single 8-pin input, which in turn will also cause the card to throttle. Or could not be bizarre like this but, say, it reports 3 to every watt consumed, which is counterproductive and would reduce your available power instead. Only way to know is bare metal, with the multimeter.

These are all fake readings of course, so no real risk of electrical damage there if you happen to see these. But that also means safeties will always be kicking in, which will be very adverse. All you can do is try, as long as the display out ports match and the card has the same power input layout (2x8 pins in your case), you could try other BIOSes as well and see if any actually give you a satisfactory result. It may very well happen that the BIOS your card came with is already the best one for it.

Even if you succeed in finding one that performs well and grants an additional power limit, you will find that this is probably within 5% of your original's performance, and may generate more heat. So, debatable, I would personally keep that undervolt which is nice and start looking at an upgrade soon. The 3070 is a 4, almost 5 year old midranger, so expected that you have to lower settings by now.

Also Id suggest you avoid msi and use a Gainward or Palit bios due to the considerable difference in cooling design between msi and pny.

Pny matches a palit/Gainward design

So as a safety measure do this in baby steps.

Use 1 of these 7 and see how the card does in attitude with these before doing a huge jump.

270W

This 1 is a step up to 280W

This 1 is a Step up to extreme 300W

These below are extreme up to 330W.

Cooling shouldn't be the primary problem with this card (the PNY card has a great heatsink and adequate fans), it is the PCB and VRM design itself

Please look at the design of the palit and gainward, they are the same as the pny, there is a slight boost with the files i provided and it would be extremely wise of the op to use those files i found first before doing anything drastic.

I provided more for you as I was not finished posting them, let me get you a video for flashing.

Also as a warning if you go like 300+ make sure you have really good thermalpads for the gpu die and ram and vrm.

Please start with 270W then 280W, see how it does then heed about 300W and 330W

Here is a video:

OK, time for an update!

Thanks for the list of bioses to try. Every one I tried worked and I slowly worked my way up and testing OC and checking with Superposition.
Currently on this one:

It has a more aggressive fan profile which I like and even though my OC doesn't get close to 330w, it does allow it to run my OC without seeing throttling. It also has reBAR support.

Thanks so much for all the help!!

Not bad, not bad. Turns out you got way luckier than me here. Eventually I ended up flipping my 3090 and just getting an RTX 4080 to get throttle free. Throttling really sucks. Enjoy!

Yeah pretty happy with it. I think PNY makes the reference Nvidia boards right? And palit and gainward are just basically oc clones or something? Idk, but maybe that allows for more flexibility here?

PNY is a reseller of professional graphics in the Americas, yes. Leadtek does that in Europe. Gainward and Palit are both brands from the Palit Microsystems group, they also run Galax, KFA2 and a few other smaller brands. Not clones.

FEs are not reference boards, they have been different since 30 series, the microFIT power input that preceded 12VHPWR and the V shaped PCBs. OPs PNY 3070 seems to use a reference board, probably why its relatively compatible with the VBIOSes

Ah ok interesting. So I wonder what's up with that Gainward that's actually the same as the card I have?

That is because they are practically the same card, yes. Some of these are just manufactured in bulk by one company and since they use the same reference design PCB, they get what is essentially the same cooling with different stickers and they are sold under many different brands. The specific variant of card you have was probably manufactured by Palit's system integrator division.

Sometimes one brand might buy cards in bulk (intended for OEMs) and repackage them as (unlicensed, but still the genuine article) boxed retail graphics cards, for example the brand PCYes here in Brazil did this with the Palit GamingPro RTX 30 cards, I would not sweat about it too much.

Some screenshots-
Glad it worked out for you! It often doesn't.

Certain coding in the bios was way different on the msi compared to the other 3, When i saw the pny bios i almost thought it was inno3d due to part numbers (inno3d uses N)

Ah ok interesting. So I wonder what's up with that Gainward that's actually the same as the card I have?
Different regions, also the palit is the same
