I've had some new parts come in from my Christmas list.

So today I decided it was rebuild day :D

System stripped down to mobo in case.

New PSU (Seasonic GX 850). I was really surprised to see that it came with the new 12V-2x6 cable that wasn't in the description.

New CPU, 5700x3d. It's already been lapped to 0.5 micron because my heatsink is already lapped. Temps look reasonable on it TBF. 32c idle, and 69c in Cinebench @ 4.1Ghz. It's really surprising just how warped the IHS's are on ryzen chips. I had to start the grind at 1,000 grit (16 micron) on a diamond plate, before moving over onto float glass and using a slurry rotation from some JIS sharpening stones. I went 4K (4 micron), 8K (1.5 micron), Then I moved onto micron lapping compounds and took it to 0.5 micron (30K grit). It came out really well. I think I'm probably at the limit of what I would want this current heatsink to be dealing with, so it may be that I get one of the big Noctua's at some point. The current heatsink is the Montech Metal DT24.

And I stripped my graphics card, It has some very minor coil whine that was more like a low clicking noise. Enough to be annoying. So that got stripped and loctite 290 (wicking/capillary threadlock) was used on each of the inductors. It also got cleaned and new heatsink paste. So that's all happy. XFX use a really old style of thermal paste I wan't expecting to see. It was the stuff that cures hard and needed soaking with iso to remove. Whine is 100% gone now as well so happy days!

Bios update for the motherboard.

And a few benchmarks and temp tests to see how everything is running.

The only real downside of the day is my over monitor case hangers are having issues holding to the wall correctly. So I'm going to have to weld some extra lugs onto them at work so there are more points of contact to the wall. One of the wall plug holes has started to pucker letting the brackets just start to move. It's an easy enough fix with some stainless steel scrap and half an hour on the welding bench. I just don't want to come home from work to find my case has fallen off the wall and crushed my monitors. So the case is back under the desk for the short term.

It's just been a nice day playing with new parts and getting everything working again.

You know I should have known "this thread is worthless without pics" :D

The only bit of the PC I'm not happy with is the bundle of wires for the CPU heatsink. I'm probably going to solder them to be shorter and neater. And the finger prints, Those will get sorted when I get it mounted over the monitors again.

No I didn't, If the IHS's are really bad I think I would move on to delid. There's enough meat on the am4 chips IHS's that you can do a pretty aggressive grind and lap if needed, I'd still prefer no IHS, but understand why the world needs them. You only crack a corner off a cpu once.

I didn't pick the colour! The wife did. I leave it static TBF. Blue/green on the fans and then let the ram dance. I thought I was going to hate the fans, but it's grown on me. And I can use it as a lamp when I get up without waking her.
