Happens in virtually every game. The stutter also happens on another high-end laptop I own. What's going on? Is this normal?

Here's some examples:

This reddit post is also pretty similar to what im currently experiencing: https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/1c7v9e3

I ditched the laptop and built a desktop instead. Thanks anyway.

Wise move. Despite the marketing hype suggesting otherwise, it is just that, hype. If you consider even a decent tower case is challenged to keep the internal components properly cooled, it is no wonder a tiny laptop case would be inadequate. A similar argument can said for the PSU.

IMO, there just is no such thing as a good "gaming laptop" (for serious gamers of the latest, demanding games) or "desktop replacement" laptops. Manufacturers can pack the horsepower of a PC into those tiny cases, but not the necessary cooling to keep them running at full throttle.

Then of course, there's the issue of a full size keyboard, mouse and multiple large screens - but that's for a different discussion.

That stutter @eidairaman1 showed looks exatly right, and will do the same thing on a desktop, so good to know either way.

If it does this with multiple computers in the same house, I would be looking at the network and/or internet connection.

not win 11, is this the only game you tested so far on the new desktop?

My computer is connected through ethernet.
That does not eliminate the possibility of network issue. It only means wifi is not the problem.

Alright, here's a video (I know, its pretty stupid) but could the mouse be causing these stutters?

Yes a mouse can absolutely cause these. Any USB peripheral can potentially cause these. What are the specs on the new rig?

If it only happens when you move the mouse, then sure it could be a mouse tracking (or mouse driver) issue.

I'll buy a wired mouse tomorrow and see what happens. If this doesn't fix my stutters, then I sort of give up.

You can't just borrow one from a friend or family member just to test things out? While, IMO, it is nice to have a spare handy, I would not like to spend money on something that ends up not fixing, or even help much in troubleshooting, the problem. Yes, in terms of troubleshooting, if it does not fix the problem trying a second mouse would eliminate the mouse from the equation. But if one can be borrowed for an hour or so, that test would cost you nothing and be just as conclusive.

(Update)

Wired mouse did nothing for me. The stuttering shenanigans continue! I'm pretty much fed up trying to troubleshoot this for weeks. I'll chalk it up to bad game engine design and learn to live with it.

Feels nice dropping 2k+ on a gaming pc and this is the kind of experience i'm having...

Thanks everyone.

Do you have any software running that isn't Windows, the game, and the hardware drivers? Have you already unplugged everything that's non-essential like RGBLED controllers, USB hubs, bluetooth adapters etc?

Shitware like ASUS Armory Crate is often the culprit. If you installed Rivatuner Statistics server as part of the Afterburner install, that's also sometimes the culprit. Temperature monitoring software, RGBLED software, all kinds of utility/monitoring crap that's coded badly can cause hitching and stuttering like this.

If you haven't installed too much software yet, do a completely clean install of Windows and make sure you install NOTHING except your AMD or Intel chipset driver, your graphics driver, and the game. If you have stuttering then you know it's a hardware issue, start unplugging stuff until you reach t

Is that actual stutter, as in continuosly, or is that minimum FPS during the test? In any case I recommend not looking to hard at minimum frames because there are myriad reasons why those can dip, "bad" game engine being one of those reasons. If the game feels good to play it's good.

75ms frame spikes from his earlier graphs prove that the game is definitely running like absolute crap. It's happening in every game, apparently.

It looks like multiple spikes per minute of 12-13fps for a few frames. If it's not some background software or connected hardware causing the issue, it could be unstable RAM timings which are notoriously difficult to pin down, and unlikely to be the issue as he said the exact same stuttering on both a laptop and a desktop, but it cannot be ruled out 100% just yet.

I run UE5-engined games like Satisfactory, Everspace 2, and Frostpunk 2 and I'm getting no spikes or judder whatsoever, so it's not explicitly a UE5 engine problem, despite people so often blaming the engine for the faults of sloppy dev work and a failure to properly test and optimise before launch...
