Which PS2 model should I define go for in terms of reliability. As far as fat models go, I heard the 3900x series is the one to go for since it’s the most reliable and robust one. But for the slim models alone, I believe I heard 7900x is the only slim to recommend since someone mentioned that it’s the only slim model that doesn’t scratch discs.

All the phat models I owned stopped reading CDs within a year and my buddies slim unit still does to this day.... Just not DVDs lol.

I think they all have issues, maybe the super slim is the best..idk.

Mine read discs for almost 15 years before I had to replace the laser.
Did that and it's doing fine.

The slim units are bad about the ribbon cable to the laser/lens coming loose and getting caught up in the DVD drive's mechanism.
It's simply stuck in place with some sticky stuff (tape?) and over time it tends to let go.

Yes, the ribbon cable coming loose is what causes a slim to "Eat" or scratch discs badly.

I've had three of these units I found with this problem - Never got any of them to work after the ribbon cable was replaced due to additional electrical damage caused by the cable coming loose and being chewed up.
Phats don't have a ribbon cable like the slims do so it's a non-issue with those models.

I heard the 7900x slim model is the only one in that series that doesn’t suffer the disc scratch issue. It’s too bad that was reversed in the 9000x series.
