Hope I'm not too off topic -

I found an old Athlon Thunderbird 1.2ghz . It has win2000 on and works pretty well. However the cpu fan is driving me nuts, it's loud as f, I lubricated it and the situation got slightly better but still.. ...there's apparently no fan control feature in the bios and it's spinning at 5000+rpm which I presume is 100% speed.

I don't know how things worked way back then, is there a software I could install to control the fan speed? (temps are ok). The fan is 3pin.
Maybe try SpeedFan. Very popular back in the day of 3 wire fans.

The thing about the big Dell fans is they move enough air at low speed that they hardly ever need to speed up.
If you slow down a small fan so it's quiet, you might cause a cooling problem. I always go big on fans. The bigger the quieter due to low RPM. In my world that Beta V is the smallest fan I would use. I prefer the 150x50mm AFC1512DG 4 wire Delta for newer builds. By newer I mean BTX Dell overclocks.

3 pin has no speed control and speedfan is a good software option.
If you search for a hardware resolution, search for TC fan or TC cooler. TC stands for temperature control.

Examples:
3Pin_TC_003.jpg
That is a working solution of what Retrorockit shows as link. Here for north bridge cooling with a simple resistor, no TC. Reduces fan speed from 5000 rpm to 3800 rpm.

3Pin_TC_005.jpg
Cheap version of that time, manual speed control by potentiometer.

3Pin_TC_002.jpg
Manual speed control at the cooler fan. Sold this way, but you have to open the case for regulation.

3Pin_TC_004.jpg
That is an example which was common for overclockers, a speed fan controller with internal temperatur sensors and a display for temps.

We used/use fan controllers like this one I have in my winxp rig

You can do it with modern motherboards via voltage control. Not nearly as good as PWM but still better than nothing.

thx for all suggestions.

Yes, I remember fondly those front panel mmhh.. panels? Along with the cigarette lighter ones and the audio ones :D late 90s early 00s really leaned heavily on the fast and furious aesthetic, and cases were much more a personal affair than they are now were pretty much every PC looks the same.

anyway, tried speedfan (the older version I fuound), works perfectly but the fan unfortunately either stops (if below 20%) or goes fullspeed (if above 20%). I guess the problem is the mobo or the fan itself doesnt really respond to the voltage variation. Oh well. I'll just bare with it until I decide what to do whit the pc, either sell it, strip it to parts and selle them separately, or keep it (unlikely, I don't have room).

Latest mobo i got is this beauty, kinda happy i got this model yet again, as i had it years ago, but sold it, as 478 was not my thing at the time. Interestingly high end 478 boards are about non existent locally, this MSI model is the only one i have ever seen, and some crap like BIOstar 865pe, some Intel desktop boards and A$Rock, but no ABIT, no DFI LanParty ( i think there was one years ago) no GIGAbyte...

Moved mah beloved socket 462 system with the heavy OC Athlon XP-M 2600+ @2.6GHz real speed, in its new case (yeah the cable management is amazing i know), i got a bit later that Cooler Master Praetorian case (cousin of ATC-S cases), now i think that maybe will be way better case for the system...

Welcome to socket A!
+3000rpm high-torque fans were a thing, keep your fingers off at all times! (that is really tough ABS plastic)

Anyway, some boards did allow for fan control through SpeedFan, like the Abit NF7-S. Other contemporary solutions would be the likes of a Thermaltake Volcano cooler, with a resistor that allowed you to adjust the fan speed with a dial on the back or front of the case. At one point, those fans die so this is a more silent but still good replacement in case you don't OC to high heavens.
As it has been sugested, there are thermistor fans like from Everflow (for example) are also an option but need to be in pull configuration to sense the air temperature changes from the cooler.
You might find the Arctic F8 fans with a temperature sensor, but even at max speed they do not move enough air to cool down a sktA cooper block.

Then you have front-bay fan controllers that can add a bit of flare, but not inside the case unless you are really creative sorting-out the spaghetti of temperature sensors and fan power wires. :D
I did have this one for my 3200+:

Ahahah yes is socket 462 with mobile AXPM 2600+... The CPU on the case is very dead AXP 3100+, i was so pissed when this CPU turned to be dead, so i did even bake it 2 times in the oven 200c for few minutes, but did not help... So i decided to use it for decoration...

It makes the system dual core AXP hahah...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who had a Socket A/462 chip die. The Athlon XP 3200+ in my eMachines PC kicked the bucket by going up in smoke about two or three years ago and I had to replace it with a 3000+ because 3200+s were about $100! UGH!

Mine was DOA, got MSI NF2 Neo 2 Platinum the high end model, and the 3100+ was in the socket, but dead... So when i think back, i am happy the CPU was dead, as the mobo is very rare, and i also collect all high end socket 462 boards... It is always better the CPU to be dead then the motherboard, as usually CPUs are shit most of the time, but the boards are high end...
MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum.jpg

I have AXP 3200+, got it for 2 euros lol, the guy seems did not have a clue about how valuable the model is... I also dont use it, as no point, since the mobile models are waay better... I have x2 mobile 2600+ that both can do stable 2.7GHz, but since is much volts, i run my 2600+ on 2.6GHz max as 2.7GHz will short its lifespan, while 2.6GHz needs only 1.83v, while 2.7GHz was like 1.95v or more..

I have 2 of them 3200's.

I might have to think about parting with them. :p

That might be a tough one though.

Waiting to find the few missing 3Dfx cards, in order to call the 3Dfx collection complete... Still missing Voodoo IV 4500, Voodoo III 3500, Voodoo III 1000/ Velocity and ofc Quantum 3D, but these are even more rare, also will be happy to replace the blue Voodoo II cards as they have cosmetic wear and damages too...

Introducing IBM DeathStar dual CPU-GPU system featuring AOpen DX34R-U and dual Pentium III 1.4S and ofc the King of 3Dfx cards Voodoo V 5500.... Will like more to get XGI Volari V8 with that black mobo, but i did replace the AOpen anyway, since it did fail at some point die to old caps, and needed recapping, so now the system is with dual 370 GIGAbyte mobo and x2 933MHz...

Booting up retro PC just to play old games just feels right. There is two LCD besides it one is 15 inch the other is 19 inch Dell IPS and you can see behind at the bottom there a 20 inch 1600x1200 10-bit EIZO monitor, but among all that I chose CRT all day. Something about it just looks amazing, playing Max Payne and Red Alert 2 images looks crisp. I haven't tried gaming with OLED monitor on PC yet, I wonder if it as good as CRT...

Things i got lately.. ASUS TUSL2-C working, but for some reason is locked on post screen and unable to enter BIOS, as when it manages to pass post, it gets on blank screen with blinking -, not sure wtf, prob the bios chip/ file is messed up, or is from caps.. The GEforce 6600 is toasted (as usual with sh@tty GEforce cards, and their notorious bad build quality), the 486 boards work, very happy about it, also the yellow one has graphical BIOS, that has icons and mouse control huh, that was prob so cool to have back in 1992/1993.... Also dont know what brand is this, as with the model i could not find any info about the mobo, also DX2 cpu did not make it to post, but at least DX4 did post, no manual huh...

NMB Tech RT101+ (Hi-Tek Space Invaders)
Welp i gotta say for me this thing is the ultimate keyboard overall, build quality, key sound, key feel, hell even weight, this keyboard is amazing, the quality is so good, is in the realm of IBM Model M, and in some places even beyond (like when it comes to the god damn plastic rivets and the lack of PCB, NKRO and so on).. Speaking about IBM Model M, i love mine ofc, BUT this god damn Space Invaders RT101+ is so good, it charmed me so much, that i dont use both Model M and the G80-1000 since mid 2023 lol, they are in their box, and i dont think i will use them any time soon... I did watch review of the Space Invaders, and the viking guy (Chyrosran22) did no justice to these great switches, he even said that they are kinda bad, and i found that to be not the case, but the guy is ALPS fanboy so yeah, but still.......

I tested my old floppy drive, but it work momentarily before suddenly it started to scratch the floppy itself. Very annoying so I ordered Gotek USB to floppy drive emulator. Reason being I wanted to install Windows 98SE to a motherboard that doesn't support USB boot. Anyone here knows whether this will work? As using floppy to boot to USB that contain 98 disc image?

You could do that or you could install the OEM version of Windows 98SE which has a bootable CD if the PC you're installing 98 on supports CD booting. I don't see any reason why your solution wouldn't work, though.

Also dont know what brand is this,
I looked it up and it appears to be made by CMC:

Huh i wonder how you manage to find the brand, as my google searches showed nothing... Tho what the hell is that CMC brand... My best guess would be ECS - EliteGroup and their many other names such as PCchips, AMPtron and i forgot what else... Sadly the retro web dont have documentation, guess setting CPU with the proper jumpers will be near impossible...

Ded ATi Radeon HD2900GT at least is GT, not XT, otherwise id be pissed, this card did work until driver installation, after that no signal...

GEforce IV Tai 4600, sadly some moron did install new fans on the card with screws (yet FK again jesus do i FK hate when ppl do screw damn fans on original heatsinks with screws, that always make the original cooler look worse ffs), and the card look bad now, even if i install proper size fans the heatsink would still have screw scars... But at least the card was criminally cheap, and also working fine under 3D, after all gotta be happy, as the GEforce not only it works at all, but it works even under 3D, and no artifacts, as i know from experience GEforce cards have bad build quality, and they tend to die A LOT more then Radeon ones..

Siemens Nixdorf PCD 5H

CPU - Intel Pentium I 100MHz
RAM - Hitachi 32MB SIMM
VGA - TSeng 1MB ET4000
HDD - Fujitsu 544MB IDE
FDD - TEAC 2MB 3.5

Socket 5 system in great mint condition, man gotta be happy, when parts and whole systems show up, in factory state, like when they were new back in the day. I really hate parts and systems that did have moron owners, that did scratch them, brake plastics and stuff, did not preserve the things they did pay much for them when new, not to mention rust, erosions and other crap..

Can it run crysis? :respect:

Huh nice... I bet this T61 is with nGreedia GPU, as the Intel one is good for jack shht, as i have one with Intel GMA, and it cant even run GTA VC LMAO, what a joke... Too bad they did not made the GPUs to be also on socket, so we can just replace them, as replacing the whole mobo is annoying, and finding one with alive nGreedia card even more, as nGreedia cards just fail, because they are with garbage build quality, and as always nGreedia pump the clocks as much as they can, in order to beat ATi or AMD...

Mine T61 does not run even GTA VC cuz Intel GPU lmao... The 462 system runs Crysis, not very well but it runs, no pic, guess i run every time GTA VC and NFS MW instead lul...

Something interesting... This Conner drive had few bad sectors, yet it did run Chicken Invaders game fine lmao...

Welp another Conner drive with green label, was like that, and i was like TF, how does this drive manage to even boot up/ show in devices, and hell windows and even to be able to scan, and not even a single sector is alive what a joke, i did keep it just for that reason...

I miss this, buying PC mag and it came with CD with goodies. Game demos, free software, exclusive full software version and most importantly graphics driver :D Very important when you don't have internet connection at home back in the day
